The names are still coming in for Farleigh Castle Vets MX, and with just six weeks to go until the gate opens on the historic Somerset circuit, the countdown is on to witness 60 two-strokes on the gas to the first corner.
We all have memories of Farleigh Castle, and if you are over a certain age, you will undoubtedly remember David Thorpe racing around the somerset circuit back in the 80s. Thorpe, or DT as he is affectionately known, is synonymous with the circuit close to Bath and it’s here that he had some of his most epic rides whilst chasing the world championship glory in what was the most stacked and competitive field in memory. Who can forget the last-to-first charge after being taken out in the first turn at the 500 GP held at the iconic circuit back in 1985, though he was on fire that day, he was pipped at the post by another legend in HRC teammate Andre Malherbe.
David Thorpe will be in attendance at Farleigh Castle Vets MX, and to celebrate the late Malherbe, who himself was a three-time world champion who tragically passed away in 2022, Malherbe’s 1985 factory Honda RC500, kindly supplied by the bikes’ curator and owner Spencer Briggs will also be on display. Spencer has the greatest collection of works bikes in the country, bar none. Brothers Spencer and Bradley are huge motocross fans who put back into the sport they love.
You will be able to grab a copy of his autobiography “No Regrets – Well Almost” available should you not already have a copy and is a brilliant read on the insight into the mindset of racing and winning in an era that we can only dream about.
