For the second consecutive year, Darwin hosts the season finale of the FIM Motocross World Championship. Just like last year, the MXGP of Australia concludes a series that spanned five continents across 19 rounds, traveling from Argentina to Australia via Europe, South Africa and China.
The Darwin track, located within the Hidden Valley Motorsports Complex, on the outskirts of the Northern Territory capital, features a hard-packed surface, with dusty soil and a spectacular, fast layout reminiscent of American tracks.
Calvin Vlaanderen’s day began with the eighth-fastest time in free practice, followed by the sixth-fastest time in the timed practice session. Although he got a good jump at the start of the qualifying race, the Dutchman was boxed in at the first turn and lost several positions, passing through the opening turn outside the top ten. Aboard his Desmo450 MX, the Red Bull Ducati Factory MXGP Team rider managed to fight his way back up the field, moving into ninth place after two laps and eventually finishing seventh after the 14-lap race, confirming his strong form.
In the MX2 class, Ferruccio Zanchi enjoyed a consistent day, gaining confidence with every outing on a track he was tackling for the first time. After placing ninth in free practice, Zanchi finished the timed practice session in tenth position. The qualifying race proved to be more challenging, forcing him to recover after a chaotic start that left him in twelfth place. Aboard his Desmo250 MX, the Beddini Racing Ducati Factory MX2 Team rider managed to climb back to a final finish of tenth place.
