Lucas Coenen won the MXGP qualifying heat in Portugal, finishing ahead of Calvin Vlaanderen and Romain Febvre. Jeffrey Herlings was riding strongly in second place but crashed and was subsequently hit by Febvre. Febvre went on to finish third, while Herlings had to settle for seventh place. Kevin Brumann secured a strong fourth place ahead of Roan van de Moosdijk.
