Imperious Gajser goes 1-1 to win ‘home’ GP of Trentino

A masterclass from Honda HRC’s Tim Gajser, saw the #243 win both races at the MXGP of Trentino, giving him the maximum 50 points and extending his lead in the 2025 MXGP championship to 39 points. Behind him, Ruben Fernandez narrowly missed the podium after his seven-four results for fifth overall, in what was a great day for the Honda CRF450R riders.

Despite finishing second in yesterday’s qualification race, Gajser felt there was more to come and after working with the team on some changes with the bike, man and machine was in perfect synchronisation in today’s GP-scoring races. In race one, a good start saw him move into second place very early on, where he then proceeded to stalk the leader, waiting for the right time to pass. That moment came with five laps to go, as the Slovenian swept through in one of the rutted corners. Despite pressure, he held on for the win, but also knew that he’d have to repeat that performance in race two if he wanted to take his sixth overall at the picturesque Pietramurata circuit.

Rising to that pressure, the CRF450R flew out of the gate, behind teammate Fernandez as the pair were one and two around the first few turns. Gajser then took over, pulling out a lead that the chasing pack couldn’t overcome, taking a comfortable victory and delighting the thousands of travelling Slovenians who cheered him every lap around ‘Gajser Corner’. The podium then had some crazy scenes as the #243 made it three GP wins out of five, and continuing his dominating start to the 2025 World Motocross Championship.

Lining up with fifth gate-pick after an excellent result in qualification yesterday, Fernandez was full of confidence for the motos, and if it weren’t for a couple of small mistakes in race one, he could easily have joined Gajser on the podium. Overall though, his speed was excellent and the fourth in race two was another sign that the Spaniard is finding his form and getting closer and closer to the level that saw him win a GP.

In the MX2 class, Valerio Lata had his best race result of the season, with a fifth in the first moto. The Italian stormed out of the gate and was in second place around the first turn, which he then held for almost half the race. Unfortunately some more experienced riders did make their way past, but it was good to see him matching the pace of the best 250F riders in the world and although things didn’t go to plan in race two, he can still take a lot of confidence from that result and keeping building momentum.

Ferruccio Zanchi knew he had a very difficult day ahead of him, starting from last gate-pick, but he didn’t let that deter him and got decent starts from the outside in both races. From there is worked his way into the top 10, finishing ten-eight and just pipping his teammate to ninth overall.

Due to the Easter holiday next weekend, the MXGP of Switzerland is taking place on the Saturday and Monday, but all four riders are excited to see what they can do on the Frauenfeld circuit, where Gajser in particular has some fond memories after his one-one there last year.

Tim Gajser  243

Very happy with how the weekend went. It wasn’t easy, and I wasn’t so good yesterday but today we made some changes and it really worked out. I need to thank all the team for the work they did to help me and it’s great to get both the wins today. I’d also like to thank all the fans who come to support me and make this into a ‘home’ GP for me. It is so nice to see so many in front of me when I stand on the podium and I am thankful for each of them. Now, onwards to Switzerland to try and keep this momentum going!

Ruben Fernandez  70

Overall I have to happy with how this weekend went, to get a fourth place in race two and to get fifth overall. I felt like my pace was good all weekend and it was nice to run first and second with Tim for a long period of that second race. There were a few moments over the weekend that I wish I could change but that happens sometimes in motocross. The positives definitely outweighed those moments though and I’m excited to keep building for Switzerland next weekend.

Ferruccio Zanchi  73

Coming into today, I knew it would be tough because of the gate-pick. This isn’t an easy track to pass on, and with last gate-pick I knew I had to do the best I could early-on in the race to get as far forward as possible. I managed to get just outside the top 10 in the first few laps and then gradually worked my way forward. 10-8 isn’t what I’m after but in these circumstances, it wasn’t too bad. Next weekend, I want to be challenging much nearer the front though.

Valerio Lata  18

I felt really good this weekend and I think I showed that in some of my riding. To be in second place for a lot of laps in moto one was a big confidence boost for me, and confirms that I do have the pace of the top riders. Now I need to keep going for the whole race and keep focusing on what I’m doing. Race two didn’t go as well, and there were a couple of moments I wish I could change, but I’m moving in the right direction and excited for Switzerland.

What more can we say about Tim and his performance. He just rode so well, pressuring the whole time in race one before pouncing on a mistake and taking the lead and the victory. And then in race two, knowing that the start is so important, he nailed a good one and just controlled the moto to win both races in front of all his fans. Ruben also got a great start and led for a little bit, which is a good showcase for the Honda CRF450R.

Both the MX2 guys put in strong races, with Valerio especially good in race one, where he was able to run in second place for a long time. Both know there is still work to do, but things are getting there and with good starts, they have both showed they have the pace.
