The Polisport Group was founded in 1978 by Pedro Araujo who had a passion for anything two-wheeled related. Polisport cooperates with some of the biggest brands in motocross, including KTM, Husqvarna, Gas Gas, Triumph, and Yamaha.
Even those new to the sport will have most likely heard the name Polisport thrown around the pits, all the way from grassroots racing up to the GP paddock. Just at the races I attend, it is safe to say that around 75% of the riders are using the Polisport foldable bike stands.
Earlier in the year Polisport released the APT unbreakable levers across all brands. Polisport was kind enough to send out a clutch and brake lever for our Yamaha YZ450F to test out.
First off the fitment. The levers were straightforward to fit. Being a replica shape of the original levers they slotted into place with no issues. There was not a lot of help in the way of instructions. You are kind of left to you’re own knowledge and intuition, so it is a good job that there is minimal work to do.
Like I mentioned before the Polisport levers are a replica of the genuine Yamaha levers, so the feel is identical. I liked this as I tend to use the stock levers anyway. However the APT (Aero Parts Technology) compound does increase the grip on the lever as it is not as polished or as smooth as a standard aluminium lever. This works especially well in wet conditions.
Now to test the unbreakable levers properly they should go through a few crashes. Which is exactly what they did in the first ride out. Unintentionally I might add, but a happy accident all the same. It was a crash we’ve all had hundreds of times, the front wheel pops out the rut and you lose the front end. A harmless crash but can easily result in a snapped lever, especially on a harder pack track. I must say the clutch lever worked perfectly. I picked the bike up and the clutch lever had bent upward at an almost 90’ angle. I hopped on the bike and was able to push the lever back level whilst riding along, losing minimal time and leaving me very impressed.
I have had several crashes on both sides of the bike which has seen both the clutch and the front brake lever bend out of shape, only to be easily bent back down. I fitted the levers almost 6 months ago and they are still going strong.
In the past, we have seen several brands make levers that are so say “unbreakable” only to find that if you crash in a certain way they will break. From what I can tell the only way you will break this lever is to snap the clutch perch itself. The lever alone does seem “unbreakable”. That coupled with the fact that it feels the same as the standard OEM lever makes me highly recommend the Polisport APT unbreakable levers.
