Jeffrey Herlings claimed victory in the opening moto of the MXGP of Italy. The Dutch rider grabbed the holeshot and never relinquished the lead.

Just behind Herlings, Maxime Renaux finished second, successfully holding off a charging Lucas Coenen. The championship leader endured a poor start but fought his way from 18th place to finish third. Calvin Vlaanderen delivered a strong ride to take fourth, while the returning Tom Vialle, racing after recovering from injury, completed the top five in fifth place.
