The Coenen brothers managed to win the first moto of the Italian Championship in Alghero.
Lucas dominated the 500 class. In the early stages it was Andrea Adamo who took the lead, but after a few laps Coenen made his move and pulled away. Adamo finished second ahead of the strongly riding Oriol Oliver. Mattia Guadagnini crossed the line in fourth after a consistent race, ahead of Tim Gajser, who made his Yamaha debut in Alghero. A poor start and a mistake midway through the race meant he could do no better than fifth place.
In the MX2 class, Sacha Coenen took the holeshot but was passed by Janis Reisulis in the second corner. Coenen made a mistake in that corner and dropped back outside the top five. Reisulis held the lead for many laps but made a mistake in the closing stages, handing the victory to Coenen. Ferruccio Zanchi made a strong debut on Ducati and finished second ahead of Simon Laengenfelder.
Dutch rider Scott Smulders rode a very strong race and came home in fourth, ahead of Janis Reisulis.
The 125cc class was won by Moritz Ernecker, ahead of Andrea Uccellini and Emil Ziemer.
