BTS Racing’s Jens Walvoort battled hard to secure a 12th place finish during the penultimate round of the MX2 World Championship in China.
The race was held at a brand-new circuit in the Fengxian District of Shanghai, where riders faced blistering heat and extreme humidity. Walvoort started the weekend with the 12th fastest time in qualifying practice. In the early stages of the qualifying heat he held a similar position, but a small mistake dropped him back to 14th. Walvoort fought back and managed to close in on the group ahead, but shortly afterwards he suffered a heavy crash on the finish jump and was forced to retire.
In the first moto, a good start allowed Walvoort to settle just outside the top ten. He found a solid rhythm but after making two mistakes in quick succession, he had to settle for 13th place.
The second moto started with a setback when Walvoort crashed shortly after the start, leaving him to fight his way through the pack from the back. With strong lap times he pushed forward into 12th position and even challenged the rider in 11th, but was unable to complete the pass and crossed the line in 12th.
With these results Walvoort secured 12th overall on the day and remains 20th in the championship standings. With one round to go next weekend in Australia, Walvoort still has a chance to move up to 19th in the final classification.
