Kay de Wolf delivered a commanding runner-up finish at Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s home Grand Prix, while Liam Everts showed front-running MX2 pace in the brutal Lommel sand.
Kay de Wolf returned to the MXGP podium with a commanding second-place finish at the MXGP of Flanders, delivering a pair of runner-up results at Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s home Grand Prix.
Known as #LommelWood, the legendary Belgian circuit provided one of the toughest tests of the season, with deep sand, shifting lines and relentless bumps placing huge demands on both riders and machinery. With the team’s workshop located just beyond the circuit, the event carried added significance for the entire Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing organisation.
Fresh from announcing a new multi-year agreement with Husqvarna Factory Racing and Nestaan, de Wolf opened the weekend with second place in Saturday’s MXGP qualifying race.
The Dutchman emerged fifth from the opening corners of race one before quickly finding his rhythm. He charged into third on the opening lap, passed Tim Gajser for second on lap four and produced a controlled ride to secure the runner-up position.
De Wolf made another strong recovery in race two. After running fifth during the early stages, he moved into third and began closing on Romain Febvre. A late crash for the Frenchman promoted de Wolf to second, completing a superb 2-2 scorecard and his third MXGP podium of the season.
The result marked an emotional return to the Lommel podium for De Wolf and provided the perfect conclusion to a weekend that began with confirmation of his long-term future with the team.
In MX2, Liam Everts showed clear front-running speed at his home Grand Prix. Racing in special yellow kit inspired by the Belgian flag, Everts claimed his first FOX Holeshot of the season and led during the opening lap of race one.
He remained firmly inside the leading group before a technical failure forced him to retire on lap 11. Everts responded with another excellent start in race two, running inside the top four for much of the moto before crossing the line fifth.
Although the final result did not reflect his full potential, Everts leaves Lommel with strong starts and proven race-leading pace ahead of the next round in Sweden on August 16.
#74 – Kay de Wolf: “Yeah, it was a really good weekend. I struggled a little bit in the first moto, but I’m actually happy we experienced that because we made a change for the second moto and I learned a lot from it. That’s what we came back from the injury for – to learn and keep building – so I’m really proud of the performance we put in. I was also really lucky with Romain in that second moto. He had a big one, handstanded and landed right in front of me, so I clipped him and couldn’t avoid him. I heard he was okay, which is the most important thing. It was a tough moto, but I gave it everything I had. Now I’m looking forward to Sweden and especially Arnhem in two weeks’ time for my home GP. Hopefully we’ll see all the Dutch fans out there. I couldn’t do it without the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory team, so a big thank you to everyone.”
#26 – Liam Everts: “It was a tricky weekend. I didn’t put too much pressure on myself, but I struggled a little with both the track and the bike. I just couldn’t find the feeling I was looking for. Two crashes on Saturday cost me quite a bit as well, so it was an up-and-down day. The start of the first moto was really good. I took my first holeshot of the year, which was really nice and definitely a positive. Unfortunately, we then had a bike failure, which put us out of the race and ended our chances of fighting for the podium. That was a tough pill to swallow, but these things happen in racing and in life. I also made a pretty decent start in the second moto. I think I was around second or third, but straight away, from the opening lap, I struggled a lot. There was no real way around it. I tried to find my rhythm and do the best I could, but it was a really difficult race for me. In the end, I finished fifth in the second moto. I gave everything I had, but fifth was the best I could manage on the day, and I’m obviously not really satisfied with that result. It wasn’t the weekend we were hoping for, but we’ll take what we can from it, keep working and push on towards Sweden.”
