  • United States secure early lead on day one

After the festivities of Wednesday evening’s opening ceremony and nation’s parade, it was finally time to get down to racing for this year’s FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy in Camerino. As per tradition, the time-honoured acceleration test formed the bulk of the action for day one, with spectators lining the course to watch the classic machinery.

Serving as a warm-up, a short twenty-kilometre loop allowed the four-hundred-plus competitors from sixteen nations to test their machinery before returning towards the paddock to conclude with the acceleration test. A short, two-hundred-metre stretch of asphalt tested rider’s acceleration and deceleration.

United States Head the standings on day one

Hoping to make good their start in this year’s race, the United States trio of Billy Burns (Can AM), Marc Grossman (Yamaha) and Fred Hoess (Husqvarna) topped the time sheets in the prestigious FIM Vintage Veterans Trophy Team classification.

Host nation and defending champions Italy finished their day just over three points behind in second. With day two featuring the longest course of the week, they will aim to fight back and challenge their rivals.

“It’s nice to be here at home in Italy as the defending champions,” told Tullio Pellegrinelli (Puch Frigeri). “There is a lot of excitement around this race in Camerino and the special tests are very beautiful.

“This year we are all learning the new coefficient in the results that is based on the age of rider and the motorcycle. As I am one of the older guys in the class, I hope it will help my results. We’ll see as the week progresses.”

Spain completed the top three on day one in the FIM Vintage Veteran Trophy Team, while the United Kingdom and Austria were fourth and fifth.

The acceleration test was won by Germany’s Bert Von Zitzewitz. The sixty-five-year-old stopped the clocks in a time of 34.30 seconds on his Maico 490.
