Weekend Reflection

It was a quite a weekend for motocross fans.

Both the Daytona Supercross and Thailand GP went off within hours of each other, meaning plenty
of sleep deprived people heading to work this morning!

The pair of events provided some superb on track action and story lines, so mxvice to a look at some
of the moments that stood out:

Musquin takes his first sx win

Marvin Musquin turned back the clock to 2009 with a devastating display at Daytona to
take his first ever supercross win. Roger Decoster said he was surprised at how well Marvi
rode but this track is everything Marvin loves – the more technical the track the better he is.
Maybe now with some confidence Musquin can show everyone the form that took him to
two world titles.

Herlings almost did it

Mr Marmite Jeffrey Herlings came oh-so-close to getting on the podium in the superfinal! He
started the race in seventh but came through to fourth before catching Clement Desalle in
the final minutes of the race in a stupendous ride. Herlings went for the pass but the sheer
effort of riding that pace in the heat took its toll and Herlings had to slow down after feeling
dizzy but still finished fourth and won the MX2 class by 45 seconds! Just to put his speed into
perspective, his best lap was only two tenths of Cairolis best time! Even the haters had to
stand back and applaud this guy’s effort.

Ryan Villopoto delivers (again)

Under pressure when it really matters, there isn’t another rider out there who can touch
him. Ryan Villopoto delivered again at Daytona in the crunch race of the season. He even
had a small tip over and lost the lead but no-one was going to deny the defending champion
the win. Villopoto showed why he is the best in America right now despite the toughest field
in years – he performs better under pressure.

Ken Roczen showed 350s can work

American’s are still sceptical about the 350, but Ken Roczen showed that it can work if one
of the best riders in the world is on board. Roczen showed that his speed is right there
with anyone in the US after starting second in heat and almost winning it if not for Stewart
passed him on the last lap. He then led the main event for the first couple of laps before arm
pump set in dropping him to seventh. Roczen admitted he struggled all day with bike set up
because he hadn’t tested on the 350 and knew he could have done much better without the
arm pump. Still, he knows he can beat them now said he wished he was racing more 450
Supercross because “ I know I can do some damage.”

Cairoli is king

Just how does anyone beat this guy? Cairoli just does not seem to have a weakness right
now. He holeshot moto one and even though Bobbreyshev and De Dycker passed him he
just remained calm and passed them back halfway through. In moto two he holeshot again
but this time the red plate holder Desalle was on his rear wheel. Cairoli handled the pressure
then stepped up the pace and dropped Desalle. The guy can win anywhere anyway and next
up is Valkenswaard!

James Dunn has arrived

You may not have noticed because on paper it looks like a bad day on paper but James Dunn
was flying at the Thailand GP. He started tenth in the first moto and was running the pace
with the fast guys until his bike broke. This was the first time Dunn had been on that pace
and his confidence will have soared. He knows he is as talented as these guys now, so lets
see what he can do in the rest of the season and in the British Championship coming up this
week.

The tracks were epic

The new Thailand GP track had it all this weekend. From lots of jumps to loamy ruts to off
camber corners to a slick surface, every aspect of a motocross track seemed to be there. It
was a challenge for the riders as different sections required totally different techniques. See
Paulin square off a tight off camber and figure out how to still do the tripled while trying to
pass Desalle showed just how technical is was in places.

Daytona as always provided a totally different challenge to a regular supecross, rough and
long the circuit gave the fans and TV viewers longs races and it allowed the riders find more
passing lines. It was also were the toughest will survive and it was no surprise that three of
the hardest workers in the sport were on the podium in the 450 class.

Millsaps under pressure

Davi Millsaps had a big crash prior to Daytona and it showed. In the race where he had to
rebound he had his worst race of the year and now the momentum is with Villopoto. That
said Davi is still in the hunt and if his injuries aren’t too bad he is still where he needs to be
to win the title, but he has to make it happen soon to stop the momentum and show that he
has the mental toughness for the title fight.
