Tommy Searle on his new Honda deal.
Tommy Searle’s plans for the future have finally been confirmed. It was previously announced that he would not be competing in the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship, instead choosing to focus on the Maxxis British Championship. It has now been confirmed that he will do that with the Buildbase Honda team too. Why did Searle choose to join the team that is managed by Dave Thorpe? That’s explained in this exclusive MX Vice interview. If you want to learn more about his decision to step away from Grands Prix, click here for part one of the interview.
MX Vice: You have signed a deal with Buildbase Honda. Talk about what went into going to that team, why you chose to go there and how that whole thing came about.
Tommy Searle:Â Obviously the news is out now that I’ve come to a deal with Buildbase Honda. I think once I made the decision that I was going to race in the UK… I think if you take a step back and look at the best team in the UK, that is the best team. I wanted to give myself the best chance to win, basically. If I’m winning then I’m going to be happy. I didn’t want to sort of put myself at a disadvantage or try and come up with something like my own deal and run everything to make it work. I don’t want that stress. I just want to step back, work hard and enjoy racing. I feel with Buildbase Honda that was the best decision. I’m really happy about the decision I’ve made.
You have already ridden the bike a couple of times, so what were your first impressions? Obviously this was your first time on a Honda, so I guess you didn’t really know what to expect?
No, I didn’t know what to expect. I’ve just rode the bike one time at FatCat to get some press pictures. Really impressed with the bike. It wasn’t that I was surprised. I could see already the bike… I’ve raced against it for the past three years in the British Championship, so I knew they had a good bike. I knew they take it quite very seriously, with the programme that they run. I was pleasantly surprised with how it turns and the balance of the bike. The one I rode just had a standard engine. I was really impressed with that, actually. Â
How does it compare to the MXGP bikes that you have ridden at DRT and BOS the last couple of years? Not KRT, obviously. Is it on par with those? Could you go and do a full MXGP season and be happy?
Yeah. 100% you could go do a full GP season on the bikes. They are very good. I think even at ‘Nations, Harri Kullas had one of his engines and holeshot the race. I think their bike is really, really good. Even comparing it to the KRT bike, it’s a great bike. The engine was standard, but I could feel the way the chassis was and how the set-up of the bike… Actually, the balance of it felt quite similar to that. It turned really well. I think obviously all the bikes are pretty good these days. This one I was really impressed with.
I’ve got one thing that I’m worried about. Whenever a rider like you stops doing GPs and they go back to British Championship, they always say, “I’m going to do a couple of GPs. Im going to do a couple of GPs.” It never happens though. Jake [Nicholls] said it. Never happened. Elliott [Banks-Browne] said it. Never happened. You are pretty certain that you are going to be doing some GPs at some point, right?
I wouldn’t say some GPs. It is in my contract that if we mutually agree on one or two, we can do it. It all depends on the circumstances. If I’m struggling and I’m thinking that I don’t fancy doing a GP now, then I won’t be lining up. If I’m feeling good and I think, “Let’s have a go,” then I’ll line up. It’s almost a choice now. My main goal and main focus is the British Championship. That’s what I’m getting paid to focus on. I am getting paid to win, so that is the the goal. At the same time I enjoy having big goals. I like a challenge, so I would enjoy doing a GP again.
With this new structure at Buildbase Honda and less traveling, how long do you reckon you can go for now? Could this be another five years extended onto your career?Â
Fifteen years, I think [laughs]. The deal I’ve done is an eight-year deal, so we’ll see really. Brad Anderson’s thirty-eight, I think, and he’s still at it. He had a podium this year. I don’t know really. Basically it’s as long as I enjoy it, and also as long as I’m competitive and I can feel I can win. I sort of wouldn’t want to be racing in England and lining up if I didn’t feel I could win anymore.
We’ll see. There are some good… You have got Conrad Mewse and stuff who’s young. When he comes up he’ll be good. I am very young still. I’m still only thirty-years-old. If I can just stay injury-free and find that good balance between riding and just living a good lifestyle, then I think I can go for a few years yet.

//PEARCY Stats Preview MXGP Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos
Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
