The Injured: MXGP of Russia

A handful of MXGP updates.

Published

on

When this feature was put together at the first Grand Prix of the season, it was fairly small and almost irrelevant. The list has grown significantly in recent weeks, however, hence why it has become a useful tool to find out who is currently out of action.

In for the MXGP of Russia

Max Anstie: After taking two weeks off, just as doctors advised him to, Max Anstie jumped back onto a bike last Saturday and has ridden a couple of times since then. Anstie will be on the line this weekend to establish a base that he can build on in the coming weeks. Eighteenth is where he sits in the championship standings.

Thomas Covington: Thomas Covington tore his meniscus and partially tore his ACL at the Grand Prix of Portugal, which threatened to wreck his season. Covington has ridden twice since then, however, and did not really experience any problems, so will be on the line in Russia. Eleventh is the position that he occupies in the series standings.

Out of the MXGP of Russia

Bas Vaessen: Bas Vaessen had a hard hit at the Grand Prix of Trentino, but it was then determined that no injuries were sustained. A grade three muscle rupture was identified in his leg following the Portuguese fixture, however, and he will now be on the sidelines for a month or so. It is likely that he will return at the Grand Prix of Lombardia towards the end of June. 114 Motorsports are looking for a replacement.

Darian Sanayei: Darian Sanayei tore his ACL at the first round of the Maxxis British Championship and is currently resting in the United States. The Bike It DRT Kawasaki rider will, however, be back on track very soon, maybe as soon as the Latvian fixture. The way that Kyle Peters performed in Foxborough last weekend indicates that riding with a torn ACL can work. James Stewart has done it in the past too!

Hunter Lawrence: Hunter Lawrence was battling a virus at the first two rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship, then suffered more poor luck at the fourth round. A crash in time practice left him with a broken metacarpal in his hand. Lawrence initially stated that he wanted to return in Russia, but an MRI on Thursday indicated that would not be possible.

Jordi Tixier: Jordi Tixier initially wanted to return at the Grand Prix of Trentino, but that clearly was not realistic. Tixier raced at an international in France before that and recorded some solid results, such as a fourth place, but was clearly not on top form as the premier class featured just one MXGP regular. Expect the former world champion to debut with the BOS squad in Latvia.

Tommy Searle: Tommy Searle ran into the back of Evgeny Bobryshev at the Grand Prix of Europe and consequently broke his collarbone. The Bike It DRT Kawasaki rider returned to racing at the second round of the Maxxis British Championship last weekend and showed good speed, but will not rejoin the MXGP circus until the Latvian event. A month or so would have been spent on the bike at that point.

Brian Bogers: Brian Bogers shattered his foot whilst testing a CRF250R in November, but started riding at the end of March and put in some solid time aboard his CRF450RW. Bogers encountered more issues through that time, unfortunately, as a small crack on his foot was identified. Surgery will be performed next week and then he will begin the road to recovery yet again.

Brian Hsu: Brian Hsu dislocated his shoulder whilst training in Italy before the Grand Prix of Europe. The shoulder was put back into place immediately and it was stated that he would not be out for too long. There has been no statement regarding his recovery, a timeline on his return or anything else though. Hsu has been contacted for a comment.

Arnaud Tonus: Arnaud Tonus has had a difficult couple of months, with a handful of knocks and injuries. The latest, a dislocated shoulder that was sustained at LaCapelle Marival, was the most devastating, as it required surgery and will rule him out for another four months or so. It is going to be quite some time before he is seen on track again.

Yamaha Racing

Valentin Guillod: Valentin Guillod needed to make a splash this season, in order to remind pundits just how capable he is aboard the bigger bike, but his hopes of doing that have been dashed by a pre-season injury. Guillod broke his leg in Spain and will miss a majority of the season.

Milko Potisek: Milko Potisek tangled with another rider on the face of a jump at the MXGP of Europe and, as a result, fractured his ankle in two places. There is currently no timeline on his recovery, but that will undoubtedly sideline him for a month or two at the very least. Another one bites the dust!

Anton Gole: One could argue that Anton Gole was a breakthrough star a year ago, hence why he landed a deal with the JK Racing Yamaha outfit. Gole broke his scaphoid in the winter months, which hurt his progress, but is expected to return to racing later this month.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
