One of the most celebrated Mini Bike events of 2011 is back, and is expected to be even bigger and better in 2012 with title sponsorship from STOMP and Welsh Pitbikes.
The STOMP/Welsh Pitbikes Great 8 Mini Duro is part of the QRA Great 8 Quad Endurance Festival, now in its eighth year, is renowned as being both the biggest Quad event in the UK and the most entertaining weekend in the Quad racing calendar. Last year the Mini Duro was introduced in the afternoon, which took place on a 3 mile course through woods, natural obstacles and fields with every rider enjoying themselves both on the track and off, where the party atmosphere, entertainment in the evenings with a huge marquee, legendary games and the lauded DJ Stumpy fitted perfectly with the philosophy of the Mini Bike racers.
In 2011 the Mini Duro lasted two hours, but due to feedback from the riders this will be increased to 3 hours this year with riders being able to compete as an Ironman/lady and take on the full 3 hours on their own, or this time as a team of two, whereby racers will be able to swap shifts with their team mates and use one or two machines (ie bike each).
The event is open to riders of all abilities and such is the event the social aspect is just as popular as the race itself. Riders who took part last year commentetd that it reminded them of the Old Battle Royal events that famous former world MTB champion Steve Pete used to run
The Mini Duro takes part on the afternoon of Saturday 1st September after the 4 hour Youth Quad event earlier in the day, with the Adult 8 Hour Quad Endurance event taking place on the Sunday 2nd September. The event takes place nr Basingstoke.
Great 8 founder Tony Nash commented on the future of the event “Last year we were surprised by how similar the Mini Bike racers philosophy was to ours with regards to our events and specifically the Great 8 which is always a party weekend on top of being a fantastic event for riders of all abilities to test their endurance and just enjoy plenty of bike time. As always it will also be competitive, with the prestige of event being high on everyone’s wish list and there will be plenty of prizes dished out to not only the top riders but other random awards which are all part of the Great 8 experience.”
Tony also commented on the sponsorship deal with STOMP “It is fantastic for us to receive backing from a manufacturer as highly respected as STOMP, and I am sure they can see the potential of the event for the sport, and one which will grow and grow each year.”
Welsh Pitbikes Director Adrian Naughton said “The feedback from last years Great 8 was excellent, and the fact it opens up the sport to new riders of all abilities is something we are right behind. Not only that but racing Mini Bikes should be fun and the Great 8 fits with this ethos and gives the riders an unique opportunity to ride their machines on an tremendous cross country circuit”.
As well as one and two man teams, there will be awards also for riders with machines under 125cc.
