Stat Sheet: History of HIMX

A trip down memory lane.

There is no vault that contains the results from every single race that has been run in Britain, unfortunately, and it is actually rather difficult to track statistics. With that in mind, this feature is particularly interesting. The Hawkstone International has attracted many noteworthy names in recent years and will do so again this weekend, but who has enjoyed the most success at the historic venue out of the current riders?

From the results below, which are based around the premier class, it is immediately clear that it is fairly rare to have a British winner. Heck, a British rider has appeared inside of the top three just three times in the last ten years. Belgian and Dutch riders tend to dominate, which is hardly surprising considering the surface, but the days of those riders being unstoppable in the sand are long gone. The results actually reflect that as just one Belgian rider has won in the last four years. However, on the other hand, the best guys do not always show up.

Another intriguing aspect to consider is that the winner has swept both motos just five times. Seeing as the field is weaker than a regular Grand Prix, it is rather surprising that dominant figures do not appear more often. Perhaps this shows just how many kinks are being worked out at these pre-season internationals? It is easy to forget that these guys are still working through set-up issues and may not be peaking physically at this point in the year. There are so many layers to these events.

In the last ten years, the eventual world champion has not started his season at the Hawkstone International. The tide could change this year, however, with both Jeffrey Herlings and Max Anstie behind the starting line. Both riders will be contenders in the premier class in the FIM Motocross World Championship and will add a lot to this edition of the event. Anyway, take some time to scroll through the podium finishers below. What stands out for you? How many of these races were you at?

The MX2 class is full of young and motivated riders and Lucas and Sacha Coenen will join them for Lierop. These talented twins regularly impressed in the MX2 World Championship last year and Lucas won his first Grand Prix in Indonesia at the age of sixteen.

A fifth place was his share in the final standings and he certainly wants to improve on that this year. Sacha also regularly showed that he has the speed to compete at the front. Highlights were his second place in the qualifying heat in Finland and top five finishes in the Czech Republic and Sweden.

In the deep sand of Lierop, the Coenen brothers will compete against riders like Kay de Wolf, Cas Valk, Hakon Osterhagen, Max Werner, Scott Smulders, Bradley Mesters, Hakon Fredriksen, Oriol Oliver and others.

Also in the 500 class we get fireworks with the participation of Jeffrey Herlings, Jago Geerts, Pauls Jonass, Calvin Vlaanderen, Brent van Doninck and others.

The weather forecast looks good, so the Dutch MX Season Opener in Lierop has all the ingredients to see a great day of racing.
