Honda hotshot wins.

Chase Sexton speaks on his sensational victory at A2, on a night where he flexed his muscles and underlined what a force to be reckoned with he is. Read his insights from the press conference following an entertaining Triple Crown.

Words: Edward Stratmann/Press Conference | Lead Image: Feld

Question: Big night for you, especially coming off of San Diego after you got that podium in Anaheim 1. Did you do a reset and come out and get that third and crucial win in the third race?

Chase Sexton: Honestly, it was kind of cool because I think all of us were within one point going into the last race, which is kind of exciting because I think there’s four guys that could have won and it was really all or nothing.

For me, I got a good start, Jason got the holeshot, and then I was really feeling good behind him. Had some good lines and I felt really solid in the whoops, which helps a lot. I just wanted to stay close to him obviously and ended up getting around him. Then just tried to break away as soon as I could. The track was really treacherous, especially the long rhythm section, the one after the start straight, so I was just stoked with how I rode.

I was really having fun in the third race. The second race was a little bit of a disaster, but just really pumped with how we battled back and was able to kind of clutch up in that main event. Being able to reset mentally and physically led to the success.

Question: For you, three races into the championship, and you and Cooper are tied for second. This is a good position to be in and the two guys that we kind of thought would be fighting with you pretty cagey. How does it feel to go into the heart of the season?

Sexton: It’s fun to be back in this position after outdoors last year battling Eli. The first two races, I didn’t feel like I was really even a part of the battle. I mean, the first one I was good, but I got passed late in the race. Then this last weekend was a disaster for me. Coming into this week, I felt like I needed to stop the bleeding because Eli hadn’t lost a heat race or a main event coming into tonight so was able to stop that.

I don’t know what happened to Eli in the third main event. I heard the crowd going wild, but yeah I was just focused on myself and was able to go 1-5-1 for the win, which I think is a little bit odd because usually we’re all pretty consistent and tonight was kind of chaotic.

So overall, three pretty good starts and really good riding for me today all day throughout practice and coming to the night show. Also just stoked on the bike changes we made. Even today I’m happy with how the team’s been helping me get comfortable and looking forward to Houston and going back east.

Question: Oddly enough this season has something very similar going on. You’ve taken your first win at round three and the points standings are actually very similar with Eli leading, you second, Cooper Webb third – same as last year – albeit it’s been very different the way it’s played out for you. Personally, how is this season going? Do you feel like it’s that much different for you from 2022?

Sexton: I would say, I mean, it is weird that I won the third round just like last year. But I would say my start to this season was very mediocre. The first race I came out swinging, but lost a lot of time towards the end of the race, and then last weekend was not fun going to the LCQ so I just told myself “you can’t let Eli get a race lead on you early in the series because he doesn’t make mistakes” so I really put a lot of effort and focus on tonight.

It worked out. I felt awesome in practice all day, was really riding good and with this track being a little bit more technical and had a little bit of both. It was slow, but also fast in some areas. I think that helps me a lot like in the third main event the dragon’s back after the finish line, it’s finding little stuff like that on the track, which is super fun for me, and it just makes racing that much better.

As far as my season, though, I definitely don’t want to repeat last year’s Supercross season. For me, I want to kind of build off what I did in outdoors and that’s really where my mindset’s at. Eli is still leading and we definitely have some more work to do so looking forward to going east. Having another week out here in California, but then after that I’m going back to Florida, to kind of starting my normal say program. But overall, just stoked on tonight, stoked how the team has been helping me and having a lot of fun.

Question: Alpinestars did a cool lot of gear for you guys and Eli tonight with the Ken Block tribute stuff. Wearing that gear do you kind of take a little bit more pride in it as you’re wearing it around and does it carry a little bit more weight?

Sexton: Yeah, just like Jason said, he was a motorsports legend and honestly like this might be my favorite gear set I’ve ever worn just with the red, white and blue and matching one of his racing suits is super special. I believe his family was here tonight so it was an honour to wear it and it made it even better to win in it. So yeah, just a really cool feeling, and definitely special for all of us here at Alpinestars and Eli, Jason and I.

Question: You went into the third race with essentially a four-way tie in the points for the Triple Crown. You went up against three past champions you know, Ken Roczen winning the World Championship last year, Eli Tomac being the main Champion, Anderson winning in 2018. What was that like going up to the gate for you mentally knowing that you have to raise yourself up to that kind of level against other champions to get your triple crown?

Sexton: Definitely a tall task for me. I really just went to the line knowing that if I won the race I was going to win the whole thing so that was really my goal and obviously everyone’s goal was to win. I wanted to get a good start and I didn’t have the greatest gate. I was lined up next to Jason, but I just told myself I got to make it work somehow and came out in second. Felt really good on the track so it was nice to really shine in that moment and going up against these guys is definitely not easy at all. Just happy with how it went and it worked out for me tonight so I’m looking forward to going back to work this week and trying to improve because these guys aren’t going to stop anytime soon so we got to keep going.

Question: Tell us about that pass on Anderson because it took a few corners? You guys were kind of crossing over each other, but it seemed like you guys raced with a lot of respect towards each other too.

Sexton: For sure, Jason went a little wide in the sand, which allowed me to get up the inside of him, and I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy pass. I didn’t really expect him to be able to cut under me. I slowed down quite a bit, but he cut under and then I kind of cut back on the straightaway and went wide the next turn and just pivoted nicely and got to the inside up the finish line. That was it, it was just good, clean racing and was pumped on that.

The third main event with even Cooper being right there was fun racing too, I’m looking forward to more of that.

Question: I feel like in the media we all consider you to be a race win guy, but this is only your second win so how does it compare to race win number one?

Sexton: It’s definitely big. I was pretty emotional after crossing the finish line just because with the Triple Crown there’s so much that can go on and going into that last race it was really all or nothing. It means a lot to get it done under those circumstances and it is only my second supercross win. They’re not easy to come by. Last year in outdoors I was able to win a good amount and honestly it doesn’t always translate. I’m just really happy on getting another one and not having only one so now we got two and I hope to win a lot more.
