Littlehempston, home track to the Teignbridge MX club, was to host the first SWOR Championship round of 2013.
With new changes to a well prepared track, it wasn’t long before the crowd were entertained with some exciting racing.
First out were the Senior class, and it was rider No 30 Lee Almond on the Kawasaki 250 who was to dominate the group . Establishing a comfortable lead in both races Almond eased to victory by a sizeable margin, first race 2nd place went to rider No 108 Ed Lewis closely followed by No 17 Mark Ferris on the Dirtbike Honda 450f taking 3rd in both races also and Ryan Langdon taking 2nd place in race two.
The Junior 150/250 class were next out with rider No 73 Andrew Stephens taking the 1st overall slot after finishing 1st and 5th. Stephens takes a 3 point advantage into round two over rival Phil Deeble taking second overall and Johny Hesnan completing the top three.
Over 40’s took to the circuit next and the crowd were treated to a real cat and mouse between No 116 Justin Carpenter and No7 Jon Tarr.
The lead was to exchange several times between the two riders before Carpenter established a small gap which proved big enough to take the win . It was much the same in race two for a short while until Carpenter was to assert his authority and pulled away from Tarr who was also being kept honest by 3rd placed rider Chris King.
Cat and Mouse also proved to be the theme when the experts took to the track. After a difficult start for both riders, it wasn’t long before Tyremarks racing team mates Wayne Shimmel and Mike Rowe were lighting up the track.
Shimmel was to lead the race after the second lap with Mike Rowe hot on his heels, and after two or three more laps the two had opened up a gap of nearly half a lap over third place Ben Butler.
Rowe was to chase hard but it was Shimmel who held the lead to win race 1.
Race 2 was just as exciting with Rowe getting a much better start and finding himself in 2nd place on the first corner with Shimmel back in 6th. Rowe soon overhauled leader Paul Deeble to establish himself at the front and there he remained to take the chequered flag and first overall on the day. Shimmel chasing hard finished a very respectful 2nd and Ryan Allen taking 3rd to complete the the top trio.
The inter juniors were to close out the event with Mathew Treen taking 1st overall in the 9-13yrs class and riders Callan Stone and Jack Perkins both enjoying a race victory each in the 14-16yrs both taking 85 points a piece into the next round.
Only two blocks were completed today due to an accident in the first race of block 3 which saw the rider needing medical assistance.
