The weekend just past the last round of the Swedish championship was raced in Västerås.
The track was extremely hard and dusty which made for dangerous racing on Saturdays qualifying with close to no visability.
For the first time 2014 S.M Ellis/Kkennevik Travel KTM riders Tom Johnsson and Jake Preston were racing at the same event. This was Jake’s first visit to Sweden which ended in disappointment. Both riders were in the first timed qualifying group, Tom had a great ride while Jake was struggling, they ended the session in 3rd and 17th. This gave Jake a horrible gate pick for the heat race where the top 13 make it to Sundays mains.
Tom started in 3rd place and slowly made his way in to the lead on the dusty and slick track, Tom took the race win a few seconds a head of Mattias Mensonen and newly crowned MX1 champion Filip Bengtsson. Jake struggled in the back of the pack but was able to make it up to 14th place at the end missing Sunday’s mains by 1 position.
Tom got first gate pick on Sunday and rounded the first corner in 5th place, the track was muddy due to some rain, he quickly made it up to 3rd and stayed there until 10 mins remaining, he would eventually finish the race in 4th which was a career best in the MX1 class.
Second moto he had a 25th place start and worked his way up to 11th by the end of the moto. Tom has had a great season winning the under 21 MX1 title and finishing 5th in the pro championship.
Tom will end his season with the last round of the Red Bull Nationals in Culham this weekend. Come say hi to us and cheer Tom on in his UK debut on the #122 S.M Ellis backed KTM.
Big congrats to Tom for 2013 from us at S.M Ellis/Kennevik Tavel KTM
