RACE REPORT: 2023 Ashbrook Hawkstone International

The full run-down of the action at the 2023 Ashbrook Hawkstone Park International.

Some of the best riders in the world descended on the legendary Shropshire sands for the 2023 Ashbrook Hawkstone International and treated the immense crowd to some world class Motocross action in glorious conditions.

Words: Ben Rumbold | Images: Brett Smith Photography

With the forecast answering the usual question about Hawkstone – “Is the hill gonna be in?!” – the riders made the eye-opening move out of the pitbox in the morning to immediately blast up the track’s most famous landmark!  The queue into the circuit grew massively and even the very top riders noticed the size of the crowd. Monster Energy Yamaha star man Glenn Coldenhoff was fastest almost straight away, with returning ex-pat Adam Sterry just a quarter of a second back in 2nd place.  The timing screens showed the name Calum Mitchell in 3rd until we realised that #32 was former Belgian MXoN team member Brent van Doninck on his new JM Racing Honda, ahead of star attraction Jeffrey Herlings, Sterry’s Sarholz KTM teammate Henri Jacobi and Hawkstone virgin Romain Febvre on the Factory Kawasaki.

Dylan Walsh put smiles on the faces of the GTCI Revo Kawasaki team with P1 in the 250 class, and 8th overall, three seconds ahead of the next best 250, Riley Racing Yamaha’s Joel Rizzi. Shaun Simpson was mid-pack on the Gabriel SS24 KTM but had a beautiful line at the bottom of the hill, whilst Ben Franklin got bitten by the grabby Hawkstone sand and was thrown over the bars of his Chambers Racing GASGAS!  He was shaken up but raced in the MX2 class regardless, and came home a very creditable 6th overall in the end.

Race Time!

Your reporter and anyone who paid attention to our preview feature’s “Where to watch” section enjoyed the sights of the start-line filling up for the first time in 2023.  The combined-classes line-up may not always be popular but it was great to see a full grid of clean, fresh, brand new professionally-prepared Motocross bikes fired up for the new season. It wasn’t so great for Herlings however, whose Red Bull KTM’s rear wheel spun like a slick and he was bog last heading up the start straight! There were a few words amongst the riders of wheel spin on the GP-style grid.

Jeffrey Herlings got some overtaking practise in race one as he worked up from bog last to 7th. Here he passes the Chambers Racing GASGAS of Tom Grimshaw.

Febvre was instantly gelling with the track and led through the trees, Coldenhoff snapping at his heels. Sterry & Jacobi were right up there in 3rd & 4th as Herlings crossed the timing beam as the 30th bike on track! Martin Barr carried across his sharpness from Arenacross with a great start and held down 5th place on the Apico Husqvarna ahead of Ashton Dickinson, until the TALK Templant KTM man suffered a small tip over on the corner before the finish on lap three.

“McVities” Husqvarna man – great sponsorship deal! – Jamie Law was initially the top MX2 bike but fell down the order on the opening circuit. Joel Rizzi was swiftly taking up the running in that class but Walsh did not complete a lap with a crank bearing failure.  Sam Nunn also had a good start but stalled the bike and the hot 250 wouldn’t restart quickly, costing him a lot of time.

Romain Febvre took to Hawkstone like a duck to water and won his first moto at the legendary circuit.

In his full-time adult racing debut, teenager Ollie Colmer on the 250 TALK Templant KTM ran in the top three in MX2 for most of the race behind the Gabriel SS24 KTM of Taylor Hammal, before the TRU7 Honda of late entry Jake Nicholls put in his fastest lap on the final circulation to deny Colmer a top three place.

Jake Nicholls only made the decision to race on the Monday before but put in a great performance for 2nd in MX2.

After 10 minutes, Coldenhoff closed in on Febvre. Sterry was going with them, whilst Herlings was having to deal with Simpson, Dickinson (“I would have held him off if it weren’t for arm-pump” he joked later!), Tom Grimshaw on the Chambers Racing GASGAS, and the Verde Sports KTM of Liam Knight.

Van Doninck had also spun off the gate but set the fastest lap on lap 4 of the 12, and was coming good at the end. He passed Jacobi and Sterry (“I got screwed up by a backmarker which cost me 3rd,” said the Welshman) in the last four laps to bring it home in 3rd behind Coldenhoff, who couldn’t quite lay a glove on Febvre as the Frenchman edged away in the second half of the race for a fine win in his first Hawkstone moto.

The second race decided the overall result in both classes as well as the gate pick order for the Superfinal where the MX2 bikes would get a headstart. This time Glenn took the holeshot and led from a much higher up Jeffrey, with Febvre struggling off the gate this time round, almost as bad as Van Doninck (“I had real bad wheelspin every moto on the start!”). The pair were 8th and 12th as they powered up the hill for the first time, past your reporter’s nose! You really need to get to the top of that hill if it’s open – check the video on our Facebook and Instagram!

MX1 International winner Glenn Coldenhoff flies through the tunnel. He took the win in the Superfinal as well.

Chambers GASGAS man Alfie Jones, starting only his second year in the adult ranks after winning the Youth 250cc British title in 2021, was the leading MX2 rider ahead of Nicholls and Rizzi. Nicholls got past Jones on the second lap, Rizzi two laps later, and the two Brits with a 15-year age gap between them battled it out for the whole race!  Rizzi was enjoying the scrap – “the more experienced guys are so clever, you can learn so much from people like Jake and then Shaun in the Superfinal.”

Febvre got past Barr, Grimshaw, Sterry, and a struggling Davy Pootjes to run 4th after lap two, but Coldenhoff and Herlings had made a break, Jeffrey admittedly pushing his hardest as he set the fastest time of the race on that second lap. “The speed Glenn was going was good for me, but I didn’t want to take a risk after what happened to #243 [reigning champ Tim Gajser, who broke his leg in Italy the weekend before], I just didn’t want any injuries before the season.” Alvin Ostlund pushed his JWR Honda up to 6th behind Sterry, but both would fall prey to the charging Van Doninck, who again was the fastest man on the track in the second half of the race!

Brent van Doninck, here leading Febvre, showed great speed as he prepares for a full-time return to MXGP. He could be a major threat in the soft stuff.

Febvre passed Jacobi about halfway through the race, as Hammal and Colmer scrapped it out for 4th 250 behind Jones. Van Doninck wore down the two Sarholz KTM men to finish a fine 4th, good enough for 3rd overall.  MX1 ended with the star attractions in 1-2-3 formation, the Hoff winning from Herlings and Febvre.  Despite having a number plate that looks a bit like a PW50 (according to Brad Wheeler), that factory Yamaha is a damned good bike!

Rizzi showed impressive perseverance with his lap times barely dropping through the race, and on the penultimate lap he got past Nicholls to seal the overall MX2 win! “The class wasn’t as stacked as usual, but I felt good, fit enough to really push every lap. The Riley Racing Yamaha team is like a family, and I’m ready to give everything in the MX2 GP season.”  Jones held on for a great 3rd in the MX2 class, and Colmer held off Hammal, whose 2-5 card was enough for 3rd overall behind Nicholls and Rizzi.  These young lads (not you Jake, sorry!) are going to give us some great racing on the British scene in 2023, especially when you stir Nicholls’ team riders into the mix!

Superfinal

With the staggered start giving the MX2 riders a small headstart, the incredible happened and Jake Nicholls took the holeshot! Nunn, Alfie Jones, Rizzi, and Jamie Wainwright on the WPH/SBE Engineering KTM followed through with Coldenhoff, Febvre, and Herlings already pouring through the pack before they crossed the finish line stripe.  Van Doninck sneaked past Herlings amongst the MX2 chaos as Coldenhoff and Febvre hit the front by lap two! Rizzi held fast against the MX1 onslaught, staying ahead of Herlings until the second full lap and only yielding to Jacobi and the JWR Honda of Alvin Ostlund before half-distance – the Swede had an amazing line into the sandpit, jumping almost onto the far right-hand bank!

Herlings admitted to being “off” after such a long time off the bike but it was still great to see The Bullet at work in the sand.

Febvre attacked the Hoff on lap three, blasting around the outside of the Dutchman in the middle loop of the circuit to the excitement of the packed crowd.  He was foiled by the inside line jump after the tabletop and Glenn clung on. Van Doninck was amazingly fast around the long right-hander at the very bottom of the track before the sandpit. Just before the end of lap five, as Romain was pressuring Coldenhoff again, he was suddenly caught out by the Honda man totally hanging it out around the outside! Brent posted the fastest lap of the entire race on that circulation and instantly set after Coldenhoff.  He very nearly got around the Yamaha on the same corner but again, Glenn did just enough.  It stayed in that order, Van Doninck visibly showing the efforts in the pits as he really pushed against two of the world’s best, staying ahead of Febvre and Herlings, who had a small tip-over on the way to 4th.  For the second straight year, Coldenhoff lifted the Georges Jobe Trophy as the Superfinal winner and was a very happy boy!

Rizzi was caught and passed by Shaun Simpson on lap seven and the pair had an entertaining little scrap, with the #24 just getting the better of the Yamaha kid almost half his age! Rizzi was the only MX2 rider to finish on the lead lap as Nicholls pulled out early – “I just got no skin left on my hands, a stark reminder of retirement!”. Wainwright put in a solid ride to finish as the second-highest MX2 pilot, just ahead of Nunn and Alfie Jones.

Superfinal Results:

  1. Glenn Coldenhoff (Monster Energy Yamaha) – 12 Laps – 28 minutes 46.111 seconds
  2. Brent van Doninck (JM Racing Honda) -4.503 seconds

Support Classes:

The EMX youngsters hit the circuit before the International races in each block, and the overall was split between the three motos.  It was a great show of two-stroke 125cc racing, and Finnish star Kasimir Hindesson took the overall with 2-1-1 motos, chased all the way by first moto winner Reece Jones, who just pushed the front out whilst pressuring Hindesson late in race two, and suffered a similar crash earlier in race three. Jones’ speed was impressive and he will be one to watch on the British scene as well as EMX this season. Northern Irish star Cole McCullough was consistent with 3rd in each moto, whilst Wal Beaney shared the 4th & 5th place finishes with 125cc debutant Jake Walker.

Our thoughts go out to young Ashden Barlow, who suffered a crash that caused the stoppage of the second EMX 125 race. He was taken to hospital and at the time if writing is still undergoing treatment. Whilst his family have asked for privacy and for NO images or videos of the crash to be shared around, they are happy for people to send cards and best wishes by post to: Ashden Barlow, Ward 227, Royal Stoke University Hospital, ST4 6QG

The Adult Support class opened the racing and was dominated by Arai Elcock, the fastest man named after a brand of crash helmet around Hawkstone Park! Three race wins did the business ahead of Johnjoe Wright who got 2nd each time.  After a troublesome first moto, Reece Ross was surprisingly the only #84 to get on the podium all day with a 7-3-3 card.

EMX 125 Results:

  1. Kasimir Hindesson (Moto Palvelu KTM) – 72 Points (2-1-1)
  2. Reece Jones (SJP Moto KTM) – 69 Points (1-2-2)
  3. Cole McCullough (Milwaukee KTM) – 60 Pts (3-3-3)
  4. Wal Beaney (Yamaha) – 52 Pts (5-4-4)
  5. Jake Walker (Mr T’s Racing KTM) – 50 Pts (4-5-5)
  6. Beau Brown (AGR Motorsport KTM) – 45 Pts (6-6-6)
  7. Freddie Gardiner (MGMX KTM) – 40 Pts (9-7-7)
  8. Yarin Evans (SRH Racing KTM) – 31 Pts (15-9-8)
  9. Lucy Barker (MGMX KTM) – 29 Pts (11-14-9)
  10. Wesley McGavin (KTM) – 24 Pts (17-8-14)

Adult Support Results:

  1. Arai Elcock (KTM) – 75 Points (1-1-1)
  2. Johnjoe Wright (Mr Dig/Ninety One Moto Honda) – 66 Points (2-2-2)
  3. Reece Ross (Ross Quarry Products Husqvarna) – 54 Pts (7-3-3)
  4. Ben Zeale (Mundell Plant Hire GASGAS) – 44 Pts (5-4-11)
  5. Charlie Griffiths (RFX KTM) – 40 Pts (10-10-4)
  6. Sam Hughes (Digga Rentals/FIR/Ace Suspension KTM) – 40 Pts (9-7-7)
  7. Brad Thornhill (LMC/Radcord KTM) – 39 Pts (13-6-5)
  8. Harvey Cashmore (Chambers GASGAS) – 38 Pts (4-12-10)
  9. Hudson Roper (3Flo/Madison/Crescent Yamaha) – 37 Pts (11-9-6)
  10. David Finnamore (Ross Quarry Products Husqvarna) – 32 Pts (8-11-12)

All told it was an amazing day’s racing at Hawkstone, most riders expressed their gratitude for the size of the crowd and loved the circuit. As Adam Sterry put it “British Motocross is not dead!” and hopefully a good number of those spectators will venture out to the Michelin Nationals and the Revo British Championship where the awesome racing will continue in 2023!

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
