Positive week for Honda World Motocross ahead of Finland

The Honda World Motocross team heads to the final of three back-to-back rounds in Hyvinkää, Finland this weekend with the goal of consistency throughout the two Grand Prix motos for round 12 of the MX1 World Championship after a positive week for both riders leading up to the race.

The Finnish event, which is just under 60km from the country’s capital, Helsinki, in the south of the country, will be the last of three sandy races in as many weekends where racers Max Nagl and Evgeny Bobryshev will be looking for a strong performance.

Nagl has recently found the going tough with inconsistent starts and a lack of luck in turning his obvious speed into the results he desires, with the potential being indicated with his top three finish just under two weeks ago in Sweden. The German racer has been working hard with the team to solve the problems challenging him and has tested this week with Showa back at his base in Belgium to further refine his Dunlop-shod factory CRF450R, which has resulted in some good improvements in the sand.

After suffering with illness and fatigue again last weekend, Nagl has also visited his local doctor who has diagnosed him with another suspected stomach infection, on a smaller scale to the one he had earlier in the year, but the Honda pilot is hoping to be fully fit for this weekend.

Teammate Bobryshev has shown more consistency during last weekend’s race, despite a technical issue in the second moto, and is finally recovering from the fractured fibula that has seen him miss a routine training schedule for three months. While the Russian racer has been trying to get back to the front of the field, he realises the main goal is to complete motos in the ultra-competitive MX1 class to bring his confidence back to the level he is capable of. He too has had a positive week with some good training and is feeling motivated heading into this weekend.

The weather is predicted to be warm and with Finland being omitted from the World Championship calendar for some years, it is expected to be an exciting weekend with many fans in attendance.

Max Nagl #12:

“We’ve had a good week. I was still feeling tired on Monday, but on Tuesday I went to the doctor to see what was wrong. He has said it’s likely I have an infection somewhere in the stomach, but not as bad as in Qatar, and I also had some stiff ligaments in the neck that are connected with the stomach, so he loosened them up a bit. We did some suspension testing Tuesday and Wednesday, which was tough because I was tired, but we made some good improvements in the sand. I’d like to say a big thanks to Tamura-san from Showa, as he’s been working really hard on this and I’m very grateful. I’ve never raced in Finland before, so I’m pumped to go there to see the place, and it’s a new GP for me. I’ve been told it’s a sandy track, which is what I like, so my goal is to be healthy during the weekend and do my best.”

Evgeny Bobryshev #777:

“In Kegums I was happy with the riding, but disappointed with the second race; we had a lot of positives to take from there though and that has to be the focus. This week I had a really positive time. My training has gone really well, my foot was feeling much better, and on Wednesday I did a race at the Leoks’ place. Racing there was good training too, and the track was sandy, but a little bit like supercross, so it was physical. I won the Super Final and I was happy with that, as it’s helped with the confidence. I’ve done a bit of training today, and then we go to Finland. I think I’ve raced there in the 85cc class, and if it’s the same track it could fit me quite well. I think is a fast track with middle ground if my memory is correct. It’s nice to race there, as I have a lot of fans and friends there, with quite a few people coming. I know I want the results at the moment, my expectancy is high; I want the podium, but we need to f ind the confidence and consistency to do that. If the feeling is good on the track, then maybe something closer to the front is possible. I’m quite positive, so I hope we can have a good weekend.”
