MXGP Comments: GP of Thailand

What did the top MXGP riders have to say following the scorching hot Thai GP?

Ryan Villopoto: “We only had two days to test when we went back to Europe but we made good progress with the bike. We made some big suspension changes and then some fine tuning here. I think the track here is not only new for all of us, it is also a little more jumpy than the usual GP track and suited me. For sure there will be weeks when a track suits me best, and other weeks when the track suits the European guys. I didn’t ride this sort of heat for one and a half years, and it even started snowing when we were training in Belgium on Tuesday, so it was a shock change for all of us.

“I guess I have some things to learn too. I also backed off my pace in the qualifier but I think the other guys did so even more to save energy in the heat. There’s a strategy to GP racing but I’m gradually getting used to it. I got pushed around a little in the first few turns of race two but when I got to third I just tried to be smart, and at this stage of the season a safe third is better than risking a crash. It’s cool to come here to Thailand and see things which you would normally only see in the movies; it’s a bizarre experience.”

Antonio Cairoli: “I made some mistakes over the weekend, especially in the qualifying. Then in the race you need to have a good start to be in front and you need to be on the inside on the corner and that was very important. I was a bit too wide with my seventh place then I got pushed to the outside. I had to regroup and settle my speed but after I went outside the track I was back at about seventeenth and I tried to charge to be in front again.

“It was not bad to end up fifth but not what I expected from my race. Then I was able to get a good start in my second race to be out in front and to make a good rhythm on a track that was very dangerous. I like jumps but this was way too much and also some were very sketchy. It was very hot and you are not completely focuses so it’s very easy to make a mistake.”

Clement Desalle: “Yesterday when I did my first lap of the track here I was quite surprised by it but then it became better and better. My starts were better today and that’s a positive thing. Two strong results and that’s important because my goal for the moment is to be like that every moto. I’m happy with my feeling on the bike and the control I have. I am trying to enjoy myself as much as possible because I know that is when the results come. We will do some testing now and I’m excited about the chance to get a bit better in small areas. It is great to have the red plate for the first time since 2013. The bike will look nice in Argentina!”

Romain Febvre: “Yesterday I struggled with my starts so we improved the bike for today and I just had to focus. If you don’t get that part of the race right then its possible to lose fifteen seconds on the front guys. I was up there in the first heat, passed a few and was third for most of the moto. I was a bit stressed. I had a big gap over Nagl but it was the first time on the 450 being there with the ‘big guys’ and I put too much pressure on myself. I lost a lot of energy because of that. The team worked so hard to put the bike on the podium and I tried my best also – like every time – and it felt great to get into the top three.

“At the start of the second moto I was looking for the GP overall podium but I did not get away so well. I made some good moves but I was stuck behind Butron. I lost a lot of seconds to the leaders. I caught Jeremy, who was struggling, but then that was it. I almost had the same points as Cairoli and nearly made it. I’m happy though. It has been a really tough GP, the hardest. We came from minus temperatures to more than thirty degrees!”

Tyla Rattray: “It was definitely a good weekend. We went back in Belgium after Qatar, did some testing and made some positive changes, mainly to the suspension. My starts were good this weekend, which is really important, and I got two good results even though I lost the use of my rear brake halfway through the second race. I was twice eighth and I felt good and strong. We have two weekends off now, time to do some more testing and try to get the bikes even better and I’m looking forward to Argentina.

“Some people may be surprised that we reacted so strong after Qatar, but you know the people at KRT are working really hard; everyone in the team put in a lot of work and hours to give us the best material, and we also gave 100% in the races, whether it’s for a win or a tenth position.”

Kevin Strijbos: “It was OK today. I wasn’t great out of the gate in the first race but I turned inside and came out well, in sixth or something. I got up to fifth and then Tyla and Paulin came together which let me get to third. I tried to push but felt straight away that the pace was too fast. So I slowed down a bit. I had a lot of trouble with the heat and I saw others struggling and crashing. Sixth was OK. In the second moto I was better out of the gate but still not good enough and I again went for the inside and it didn’t work out as well. My riding was pretty good and I came up to fifth; the top five was not too bad. Considering my wrist and being unable to train I think I can be happy. We definitely need to be better though and we have two weeks now before Argentina.”

Gautier Paulin: “I have two comments from today: I’m really sad because of my crash, but I’m really happy because of my riding. I think I’m the only one who was doing so many big passes. In the second moto I crashed on the third corner but it wasn’t my fault as I got hit by another rider. I was on the ground and another rider rode over me but I managed to get back to sixth, with a shorter moto. I think I would have been fourth with my pace.

“In the first moto, I had two crashes. I landed on Rattray when he changed line and I was already in the air, and the second was my fault. But I’m happy with my riding after the crashes; with the way I was riding to get back and the lines I was choosing to make these passes. On paper it’s not bad, but we’re just looking forward to the next GP now.”

Evgeny Bobryshev: “You know, today was a really really tough day for everyone here because of the heat and the track. When you have lots of work to do in this heat, it’s very difficult. For me, I had a crash yesterday so I had a bad gate pick but I managed to come through. That’s really difficult in the beginning because you have really to fight and concentrate a lot and you use a lot of energy.

“I was for a while off the bike and not racing last year and I feel at the moment like I’ve missed six months of riding. Before the season started I was looking at it like I will come back and be at the front because the training was going well, but racing is a completely different story so it’s taking time. At the moment we need to build it up. The team understand it and are really helping and supporting me, and overall I’m really happy with the bike. My goal this weekend was for more solid points because the season is long and we’re continuing to rebuild, so I’m really looking forward to the next GP to keep this going.”

Max Nagl: “I hoped to keep the championship leader’s red plate here in Thailand, but with the heat and the track conditions the way they were I wasn’t taking any risks at all. It was so, so hot and that was tough. Also, the track was challenging, so like I said I wasn’t taking any risks. I was happy with my first moto result. I got a good start, went a little wide in the first turn, but put together a good race. In the second race I just couldn’t make it happen. I got a bad start and had to fight my way forward from the middle of the pack. I made up some positions but I wasn’t prepared to really push to the limit.”

Todd Waters“I wasn’t feeling great at the start of Sunday, but things really improved. I was just disappointed that things hadn’t gone well during qualifying. I couldn’t get a good lap together in practice and then didn’t have a good qualifying race. But things were much better on race day. Running closer to the front felt great. I know my speed is good, I just need to work at improving my starts so that I can get amongst things from the first lap.”

Jeremy van Horebeek: “It was a bad weekend. I hit my head in the first moto and could not see clearly. I had to retire twice. The heat also affected me. We have some work to do with the team because we are not where we have to be. We will see. I don’t have anything more to say about the weekend.”

David Philippaerts: “Not a 100% day. In the first moto I was on the brakes too much in a corner because I did not want to touch the guy in front of me and stopped the bike. I started in twenty-fourth and finished twelfth and this was good because of the fast lap-times. It was also important to pass many riders. In the second one I started in the top five but made a lot of mistakes and at least ten riders passed me in the first three laps.

“In the last ten minutes I was stronger and made four positions; it was a decent end and if the race had been full length then I might have got Ferris also. Tenth was OK and continues our good way. The track was hard here. I’m happy and we will focus for the next race. Last year in Thailand we had a 0-0, so this was better.”

Glenn Coldenhoff: “The second moto definitely felt a bit better. I was riding smoother…and didn’t get lapped! In the end I was so tired and missed some strength. It was a solid finish if you look to yesterday and the fact that I hit my foot again. I was 16th and 12th, so it was solid but obviously not special. I think I got better over the weekend and in terms of dealing with the heat.”

Steven Frossard: “The weekend was difficult for me and my body just doesn’t cope with these conditions. I feel like a ghost on the bike and if I try and push when I feel like this I crash, like I did in the race one. In race two I felt the same, had no power for the battle and just had to try and get to the finish to get some points. I know I have the speed to be at the front but I need to find that good feeling in the next round.”

Filip Bengtsson: “Without a doubt, this was the hardest race of my life! Like many other riders I found it difficult to cope with the heat and the track was quite tricky as well. In the first moto it seemed just for a second I was going for the holeshot! Unfortunately Cairoli cut just in front of me and I got run wide. My plan was to go with the faster guys at the start of the moto and pull a gap… but it didn’t really work out. After half of the race I had emptied myself. I needed to pull off because I got dizzy so I came in to get some water in my face. Once more I tried to go out but it just didn’t work.

“The second moto was pretty similar. Initially my pace was okay, I ran 16th looking to make a pass on Frossard. I got frustrated that I couldn’t find a way through and lost contact with that group. Once I was in ‘no man’s land’ I lost my rhythm. With five laps to go I was done again and got picked up by the group behind me. It was super tough but I’m happy I went out for the second race and at least got one point.”

Christophe Charlier: “On Saturday I tried to ride through the pain in my heel but it was excruciating. There was no way I could ride near my normal level and the risk of making the injury worse was pretty high. This weekend the track was super technical and it was easy to make mistakes.

“It was a tough decision not to start however I did what I needed to do. Especially with so many people who came out to support us it was a bummer not to be able to ride. Still I wanted to thank my team, all the fans from Corsica who visited the race, our Thai supporters, the big boss from KYT Helmet, the people from Forma boots who came over for the occasion and everyone from Honda Thailand who was there. We will do everything that’s necessary to heal properly now and I will come back stronger.”

Shaun Simpson: “Yesterday was tough. I don’t know what was going on with me, the track or the set-up. I didn’t change the set-up actually and I’m glad about that because it felt alright today as the track altered. On Saturday there was grip and then suddenly no-grip and I didn’t put in a lap from the get-go. It was poor day and I was then fighting a losing battle today from the outside.”

“In the first one I pulled through OK, and I thought ‘if I can get out of here with twenty points then I’d be happy’. It was an amount that I aimed for at every round last year to be going for that top six-eight bracket. Ten points in the first one was OK but I didn’t have any more to give in the second. I wasn’t feeling dizzy but it was hard work, definitely one of the hardest we have done. I’m glad to get out of here in one bit and the GP has claimed a lot of guys. Argentina looks a bit sandy and with some hills at least. I’m looking forward to getting some work done back home and starting the British with the number one plate.”

Michelin MX Nationals – Race Report, Rnd 2 – Monster Mountain

Last weekend the new Monster Mountain facility staged its first event, round two of the Michelin MX Nationals powered by Milwaukee, and what an action-packed weekend it was! With almost 300 hundred riders keen to get on the new track and a tremendous crowd for the MX Nationals, both enjoyed the two days of fast and hot motocross action.

If you haven’t seen the images and videos on social media, Monster Mountain is a USA- styled track set on top of a Welsh mountain. With months and months of hard, back-breaking work that involved moving hundreds of tons of earth with machines the size of a small house, the Monster Mountain track was born, and the scale of the project was mind-blowing. Once you have climbed up the mountain’s side to the peak, you enter a landscape that could be easily mistaken for Pala or even the moon.

The Leatt Pro MX1s were mainly about three riders, the Crendon Fastrack Honda pairing of Conrad Mewse and Josh Gilbert and Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha rider Harri Kullas. The winner would come from one of these riders, who have dominated the home racing scene all year.

Kullas got the holeshot at the start of the first combined MX1 and MX2 pro race but was quickly passed a quarter of the way around the opening lap by Mewse and then his teammate Gilbert, who had gated third, slipped by Kullas before the end of the lap. While this happened, John Adamson (ASA United GasGas) got cross threaded in one of the deep ruts and dropped from fourth to tenth.

Adamson’s teammate Ivo Monticelli, who was making a comeback from an injury he suffered at round one of the Revo series, took full advantage of his teammate Adamson’s problems and took over his fourth place as Jason Meara (JM 10 Moto-cycle Racing Honda), Tom Grimshaw (Chambers Racing), Charlie Putnam (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna), Jamie Carpenter (Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha), and Dan Thornhill (Chambers Racing) all moved up a place at Adamson’s expense.

The leading four riders of Mewse, Gilbert, Kullas, and Monticelli stayed in the same running order to the end of the race as Meara and Grimshaw fought over fifth place. The two riders changed position many times till, on lap eight, Meara suffered a mechanical failure, leaving Grimshaw to make fifth all his own.

Adamson was on a charge after his crash and fought back to sixth at the end of the race, while Putnam came off his machine, relegating himself back to thirtieth place.

The immense new track, with its long start straights and big jumps, and even an adverse camber turn, was always going to disadvantage the smaller Apico MX2 machines over the power of the Leatt MX1 machines, with Glen McCormick (Chambers Racing) being the first of the MX2s around turn one, followed by Jamie Wainwright (WPH/SBE/Redline KTM) and Carlton Husband (Phoenix EvenStrokes Kawasaki) as race favourite Charlie Cole (Blades Bikes Kawasaki) suffering a mechanical problem that saw him at the back of the pack with a lot of work to do.

Wainwright had passed McCormick to lead the MX2s by the end of the first lap as Husband slipped back three places. But, as the race continued, Husband upped his pace and repassed six other riders on his way to tenth in the race, but first MX2 home.

McCormick put on a last-lap charge and snatched a place from the hands of Wainwright as the pair finished eleventh and thirteenth on the track but second and third in the MX2s, as for the unlucky Cole. He regrouped and fought his way back from thirtieth to finish fifteenth in the race but fourth MX2 and the last person on the lead lap.

Kullas once again got the holeshot at the start of race two, and once again, Gilbert found a way past him by the end of the lap. Behind them, it was Grimshaw, Meara, Monticelli, Mewse and Carpenter.

Grimshaw took his time in the opening laps and slipped back to sixth. Mewse slid past Monticelli on the second lap to take over third place, with Meara relegated to fifth.

While Grimshaw and Carpenter fought over sixth place, the running order of Gilbert from Kullas, Mewse, Monticelli, and Meara stayed the same till the very last lap when Mewse used the backmarkers to snatch second place from Kullas, and with it second overall for the meeting. (MX Vice was witness to the incident that cost Kullas second place, where two MX2 riders fell in a rut that Harri had already committed to, leaving the Yamaha man to haul his bike out of the massively deep inside rut as Conrad tiptoed around the outside of them, probably laughing his head off!).

On the Apico MX2 side of race two, Cole had gated tenth but had Wainwright in his wheel tracks and McCormick two places further back as they battled for the MX2 lead amongst the bigger MX1 machines.

After changing the lead with Wainwright several times, Cole established himself eighth on the track but first of the MX2s. Wainwright finished in tenth place for the second MX2, with McCormick third. Unfortunately, Husband didn’t get the start he wanted and didn’t seem to get going as he finished sixth MX2, behind Joe Brooks and Charlie Heyman (Tru7 Honda).           

With three race wins and a second place, Ben Edwards won the RFX expert MX1s from race one winner and wildcard rider Josh Waterman. Jayden Ashwell (AJP Geartec Husqvarna) was third, with Jay McCrum missing a podium position.

Ashley Greedy (Darjen Contractors Gas Gas) won his first three races in the RFX MX2s, but while in the lead of his fourth and final race of the weekend, he was passed by Jimmy Margetson (AJP Geartec Husqvarna) on his way to second overall, with Mathew Bayliss (Darjen Contractors Gas Gas).

Ash Greedy had a great weekend on home territory.

Wildcard rider Scott Elderfield won three out of his four races on his way to the Motoverde amateur MX1 overall, with race four winner Sean Wainwright (Fasteddy Racing Honda) second. Josh Greedy (Darjen Contractors Kawasaki) tied in third with Luke Mellows (Forty-Four Honda).

Wildcard riders took three out of the top four places in the Motoverde amateur MX2 class as Ben Clarke, with two wins and two third places, took the overall from race two winner Raife Broadley (723 Race Bikes Gas Gas) while the winner of the last race Wal Beaney was third, just five points behind the winner.

Tallon Aspden (LA Groundwork KTM), with three wins and a second place, won the Worx clubman MX1s from Darren Manning-Coe, who was second in all four of his races as Daniel Chapman, the winner of the last race of the weekend was third as Drew Lane just missed out on the podium by two points.

Sam Ongley (Fantic) won all four Spiral GFX clubman MX2 races from Matt Tolly and Charlie West.

In the youth Fly Futures MXY2s, Billy Askew (GTCi Revo Kawasaki) won all four races and remains unbeaten this year. Behind him, Domonic Newbury (426 Motorsport KTM) and Mackenzie Marshall (DK Offroad KTM) were separated by just three points as they finished the weekend in second and third overall.

Billy Askew (441) already has his nose in front of Domonic Newbury (404), Mackenzie Marshall (555) and Jak Taylor (22, WM Tatchell Husqvarna).

Reece Jones (SJP Moto Husqvarna) was third in his first race of the weekend, but from then on won the other three for first overall in the Fly MXY125s. Jake Walker (Mr T Racing KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top four all weekend, was second, with a race-three low score pushing Tyla Hooley (Fantic) down to third.

Josh Vail (SJP Moto Husqvarna), with two race wins, a second and a third place, took the overall win in the Syntol Big Wheel 85s with Jamie Keith (MBR X&P KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top three all weekend, second and Charlie Richmond third.

With a couple of wins and two-second places, Joel Winstanley-Dawson (Techsource Racing KTM) won the Syntol small wheel 85s from race one winner Lucas Lee (Husqvarna) and Ollie Truman.
