MXGP Analysis: Multifaceted Ruben Fernandez making superb progress in 2023

Spaniard impressing.

After narrowly missing out on the podium in the previous two rounds at Trentino and Portugal respectively, Ruben Fernandez powered himself onto the box with an accomplished display in front of his home fans in Spain.

Grabbing third with another polished performance, the Galician continued his overwhelmingly positive start to the season that kicked off with a memorable maiden MXGP victory in Argentina.

Although the frustrating mistakes have cost him some extra podium finishes, he’s certainly cutting a more disciplined and controlled figure who’s managing his weekends nicely in 2023.

Considering this is just his second season in MXGP and first under a factory awning, there’s been much to admire about how he’s dealing with the added pressure and weight of expectation that inherently arises.

In addition, the fact he’s also had to manage being the sole rider at Team HRC, which has also seen him be an instrumental component in developing the bike due to Tim Gajser’s injury, and this adds to what a terrific job he’s doing.

Currently sitting third in the MXGP title race after the consecutive home style rounds in Portugal and Spain, he gave a keen insight into the challenges he’s faced and how content he is with how he’s going.

“It was a couple of really intense GPs with Portugal and Spain being back-to-back and being my local and home races. There was a lot of fans and a lot of support, which was obviously really nice to hear and experience, but it did add a bit of pressure,” he explained to the HRC website.

“Still, standing on the podium in Spain was an amazing feeling and I’m so happy to have achieved that, so now my goal is to keep that up and make it happen again in France this weekend.”

Team manager Marcus Pereira de Freitas then added: “We’re all so proud of how Ruben has raced this year so far, and also how he has dealt with everything that has happened. It certainly hasn’t been easy but he just stays so calm and relaxed and he is a pleasure to work with. Third place in the championship so far is a great achievement and we hope he can continue this momentum at Villars-sous-Ecot, which is a typical French hillside track and one that we believe he can perform well on, and get up on the podium once again.”

By the numbers, the fact he’s bagged a very respectable 36 points in the qualifying races, including a memorable win in Portugal, plus one overall victory, one moto win, two overall podiums, four moto podiums and seven top five moto finishes underlines his consistency and what a force to be reckoned with he is.

Well and truly on the right path and proving that he’s right at home at the level despite so much placed on his shoulders, the hard working 24-year-old’s building momentum wonderfully.

Although he’s gained a reputation for making some unnecessary mistakes and crashes by pushing too hard over the years, there were certainly signs of him maturing last year, where he bagged two podiums and banked five top five overalls until his nasty spill at Loket scuppered the remainder of his campaign.

“We did not finish the season as I would have liked. I finally finished P8 overall in the championship in my rookie MXGP season, with many failures in the first races and an injury at the end of the championship. Although it could have been better, I think I have to be happy after all. Next season we will go for more,” he reflected.

He’s unquestionably carrying on going in the right direction this season, for he’s parlaying speed and results superbly even if his penchant for committing the odd misstep has reared its head sporadically.

Raising the bar in terms of performance and subsequently the expectations placed on him, the #70 deserves tremendous credit for how he’s handled himself so far this term, as he’s done a top job of finding the limits, making strides with the motorcycle and getting quality results.

Confident, happy with the team around him, who do everything in their power to help him, and starting to piece it all together, the Spaniard appears destined to continue on his upward trajectory.

Although the major determining factor towards his success will be minmising any incidents, importantly, though, the signs are promising he’s on the right path to do just that in his quest to become a bonafide star in the MXGP class.
