Luke Norris – Maxxis round #7 report

After having a few weeks off racing I was able to work on the problems we’ve been having this year, I came into this race feeling confident knowing I could have some good results. Langrish is a new track for us and after a few track walks I knew it would be a good track for me.

Qualifying didn’t quite go the way I wanted it too, after 2 laps the tyre came off the rim and I had to run back to get my other bike. I tried my hardest to put in some good laps but ended up in 24th, only a second away from being inside the top 15. This didn’t give me a very good gate pick for the races but I had to make do with what I had.

Race 1

After practising around 150 starts over the past few weeks, I managed to get a reasonable start. Coming around the first corner just inside the top 15, I got pushed out wide on the 2nd turn and dropped back to about 24th. I managed to pick a few off on the first few laps and had 2 riders just in front of me. We battled for most of the race before I managed to make a pass stick and started closing in the next group of riders in front of me. I was in 20th at this point and knew I could get inside the top 18. Unfortunately I made a small mistake a dropped it on a corner, losing the positions I had made throughout the race. I ended up in 22nd, not where I wanted to be but my times were good and I just needed to limit the mistakes.

Race 2

I got off to a better start but once again got caught up in the 2nd turn and dropped back a few places. I managed to make some passes early and set my sights on the riders ahead of me. The track at this point was getting extremely rough and not many lines were forming. I carried on charging and managed to catch the group of riders in front of me, but I couldn’t find a way past. There was a group of about 8 of us, so it was extremely close and I could have finished anywhere from 14th to 22nd. I managed a 20th place and salvage a point, but once again this wasn’t what I knew I could get. With one more race to go I knew I had to make it happen and get a better start.

Race 3

I got off to a much better start, just outside the top 10. I made it cleanly round the first few corners and came out around 12th. I kept my head and tried my best not to make any mistakes. I stayed in 12th for a few laps before 2 people got around me. I didn’t let them get away and tried my hardest to keep with them. I caught back up to 13th place and was looking for a way around. I made a small mistake on a very tough part of the track and lost all the ground I had just made up. By this point 15th was slowly closing in on me but I managed to keep the gap for the remainder of the race. I crossed the line in 14th, a much better result and a confidence booster for the rest of the season.

We’re now getting everything ready for the next European championship this weekend at Lierop inHolland. A very busy week but I’m excited to race and feel much more confident going into this weekend. Just need the starts and I’ll be right in there with them. A big thanks to everyone who came out to support me at Langrish, it definitely helped!
