Team Suzuki Press Office – December 29.
Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s new MX2 signing Julien Lieber will race the 2013 Le Touquet Beach Race in France.
Lieber will trade his RM-Z250 for a modified factory RM-Z450 for the gruelling three-hour L’Enduropale on February 3rd; an event won by Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Steve Ramon in 2011 and a second by the team’s Tanel Leok in the snow-hit 2012 event.
The 18-year old Belgian isn’t a novice when it comes to beach races; he put in some good results in recent rounds of the French Sand Racing Championship and claiming victory in this year’s “Enduropale Jeunes” aboard a Suzuki RM-Z250.
Lieber will get the full support of the Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MX1 team, with three-time Le Touquet winner Eric Geboers leading the squad.
Said Lieber: “I’m really looking forward to this race. When I was little I went to see the race with my parents. It’s so different from the GP’s; the start, the length of the race, the rivals, the weather, so I think it will be a big challenge. But I’m going to have all the support I need from the team.
“I know it’s a bit close to the start of the GP season, and it won’t be easy to prepare for both Le Touquet and the GP’s, but on the other hand it’s an unbelievable opportunity to enter this race with the Factory Rockstar Energy Suzuki team. It’s a chance that doesn’t come round too often and I’ll do my best to be ready for both Le Touquet and the GP-season!”
Originally the brainchild of Thierry Sabine in 1977, the beach race of Le Touquet has become famous thanks to its extremities: 1000 + participants who are involved in a mass start, speeds in excess of 150km/h, winter temperatures, sea side-wind gusts, combined with a three-hour racing format in brutally deep sand.
