If the number 13 is unlucky for some then Liam Garland is definitely one of them, well at least 2013 that is!
Over 8 months have now passed since Liam last rode a bike after wrecking his knee in a racing incident just 2 weeks before the first round of this year’s Maxxis British Championship.
Scoring points as a 15 year old in 2011, followed by a number of top 10 finishes in 2012, Liam signed for the Dyer & Butler KTM team for 2013 and things were looking really good for a shot at the Top 10 in this year’s series, however disaster was to strike and a visit to renowned Belgian knee specialist Dr Clauss followed.
Months of Rehab later and Liam is due to see Dr Clauss on the 21st of this month to hopefully get the final go-ahead to get back on a bike.
Liam had this to say about the operation and what he has planned for 2014.
“The knee had not been right for 4 years since I snapped the cruciate at a supercross in Liverpool, however with the aid of my Donjoy Knee Braces I was able to continue riding and went on to win a couple of National Youth titles in the process as well as some good performances at the Maxxis.
We knew at some point in my career that I would have to have a reconstruction but this was brought forward after I snapped my MCL this year. Knowing how important it is to be fully fit we decided to use Dr Clauss for the reconstruction as he has so much experience with the leading European GP riders.
I was operated on in April and have been back in the gym and cycling for the last 2 months under the eye of Wayne Devonald at Reactivate Physiotherapy.
I hope to get the green light to start riding again from Dr Clauss later this month and can’t wait to get back in the saddle.
My overall fitness feels really good right now but it will take a couple of months of bike time to get myself back up to speed so I plan to spend as much time as I can in the sand of Belgium and Holland during the winter in preparation for the 2014 Maxxis and Red Bull championships.
Unfortunately I wasn’t offered a ride by Dyer & Butler for next year so we are currently looking at some alternatives, but all I can say for now is that it is likely that I will be back on Yamaha and I would like to say a massive thank you to all the sponsors who have stuck by me and offered their continual support for next year”.
