Hunter Lawrence impressed during qualifying in his return to the FIM Motocross World Championship in Latvia, as he logged a steady third and clearly had the speed to fight near the front. Things took a turn for the worse in the opening moto earlier today, however, as he crashed and hit his head, which will rule him out of the Grand Prix of Latvia.
“After a consistent qualification race yesterday, Hunter Lawrence will unfortunately go back home without points this weekend,” a statement from the 114 Motorsports team confirmed. “He was in fourth place in first moto, but lost the front and landed pretty hard on his head after a step up. He is ok, but to not take any risks he won’t start in second moto. Let’s keep being positive and focus on next GP in Germany.”

Hunter Lawrence is out of the Grand Prix of Trentino, after sustaining a hand injury in timed practice yesterday. Initial scans did not show an injury, hence why he ventured out onto the track for the qualifying race, but it was obvious that the pain was too great to continue. A broken metacarpal is the issue and will also sideline him for the Portuguese event next weekend.
“We just had a crash in time practice. It was pretty sore, my hand went near the rear wheel and got pretty tangled up,” Lawrence exclusively said to MX Vice editor Lewis Phillips. “We went to get x-rays just to be sure: One straight over the top and one of the open palm and everything looked good. There were no cracks that we could see. We went and tried to race the qualifying race. After the sighting lap I was not sure how I was going to do it, but we just tried anyway. Maybe the adrenaline was going to take over? We gave it our best shot, but I just could not hold on. I could not even pull the front brake in.
“We went and got another x-ray after a while, side on, and my metacarpal has a big crack through it,” Lawrence continued. “We are going to go to the doctor on Tuesday or Wednesday and do everything that we can to be back as soon as possible. Roughly, we are thinking Russia. It is just under three weeks, I think, so we will do everything we can to be back by then.“
