Have a good Festive Season
The AMCA would to thank all it clubs and members for helping to make 2012 an enjoyable year. With the tough economic conditions that we are currently experiencing and adding to that it was one of the wettest years on record, the effort put in by all the volunteers and riders who make the AMCA great has truly been amazing. We would like to wish all our clubs and members a merry Christmas and hope that 2013 is a prosperous year for all. Keep an eye on the AMCA website in the New Year for exciting news for 2013!
Herman van Dijk
A good friend of the AMCA – Herman van Dijk from Eindhoven in Holland died earlier this month on December 6th from cancer. In the 60’s Herman a club official read reports in the Dutch Motorcycle press of the televised AMCA Scramble events and he got in touch with the AMCA and was responsible for bringing England teams of Dutch riders to ride winter televised events from the Brownhills circuit, later he introduced AMCA Officials to the IMBA, which had organisations in Belgium, Germany and Holland. He still organised events in Holland and invited English riders to compete including Sidecars as well as solos. He also brought over the first German team who rode in a televised meeting at Coalpit Lane, Rugeley. Later he invited AMCA trials riders to Eindhoven to show the Dutch what trials riding was about. He was never an Official of the Dutch NMB Organisation but attended early IMBA meetings as a translator. The IMBA has grown to include 10 National Federations from Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Czech Rep, Denmark, Italy, Russia and the AMCA.
Herman attended the Classic International at Hawkstone Park in 2009 and again in 2010 and was pleased to meet several of the AMCA riders who had ridden in Holland in the 60’s and were at Hawkstone including, Albert Eastwood, Johnny Duncombe, Tony Melvin, Johnny Richardson, Johnny Guest and Peter Shemwell.
Over the 46 years since the AMCA first joined the IMBA many British riders have competed abroad in the various classes, possibly over 1000 and many were at more “home” Internationals. It was all down to one man – Herman van Dijk.
Condolences to his wife Truus, their Daughters and their Grand Children, from members past and present of the AMCA.
Keen stalwart of the AMCA Glyn Semmens died last week, Glyn first joined the AMCA in the 60’s along with his son Vaughan who passengered Glyn in AMCA Sidecar Scrambles with the Smethwick Pirates Club (later changed their name to the Warley club). He later joined the Phoenix club nearer to his house in North Birmingham. His son, Vaughan went on to be a top solo rider with the ACU. During the 70’s and 80’s Glyn was a keen supporter of the AMCA and the club helping out during the 70’s and 80’s acting as Clerk of the Course, Secretary of the Scrambles and often announcing at the Scrambles, most of which were by the Phoenix at the old Brereton track near Rugeley. He was the club secretary in the early 80’s and was selected to the AMCA’s Executive Committee later he joined the AMCA second oldest club Midland Social MCC in Birmingham.
His funeral is on Friday 28th December at 1:30pm at Witton Cemetery – Birmingham.
