Viewpoint: Ryan Dungey
“I had multiple close calls.”
Anaheim 2 was a turning point for Ryan Dungey, as he is no longer playing the hunter in the premier division. Dungey, who claimed his first main event win of the season, will bolt red backgrounds onto his Red Bull KTM again this weekend in Glendale, but he was not celebrating on Saturday night. In fact, the mood in the post-race press conference was rather sombre.
MX Vice: Ryan, again, the story kind of remains the same as with your teammate. You had trouble in the heat race and thirteenth gate pick for the main event, yet you pulled the holeshot. What was your focus like going up there for the main event?Â
Ryan Dungey: [Laughs] Yeah, I think the first thing was if I could get a good gate. Pretty much behind and ahead of the gate, there really were not any good ones unless you were in that top five. I was able to find one right on the inside; it was super tacky with a lot of grip and not too rough after the gate. I was able to get off when the gate dropped and drove really well, so found myself in the first turn in first. From there I tried to get the triple into the rhythm and start to break away, but it was tough.
All day I searched a little bit, I will say that, then the deal in the heat race and everything happened. I got off to a good start, but even in the main event it was tricky. I felt good, but my second half of the race definitely was not as good as I would have liked it. With what happened, I knew that the track could reach out and bite you. I had multiple close calls. It was like, ‘Man, do we keep going after it or be smart and tame it down a little bit?’
I decided to just chill out, as we had plenty of room. I saw Marvin [Musquin] and just gauged things. Overall, with all of the adversity and stuff we had to face, I am glad that we were able to come away with the win today. [It was] a hard-earned one.Â
Talk about the heat race. What was the problem with the bike? It looked like maybe it was the throttle?
Yeah, I honestly really do not know what happened. I did not hit anything metal on metal, but the way the throttle housing hit the ground it busted and my lines were hanging out. The throttle would stick right open, so I had to pull out. I could not salvage any of it. I mean, it was not rideable at that point.
Even the start in the semi was bad, so did you feel like momentum was not on your side? How did you get that fixed, because all of a sudden you got a really good start when it counted?
We had a change that we made going in from practice to the heat. Nothing to do with the change I guess, thinking about it, but [Blake] Baggett was on the outside of me and had the jump. He came over and started locking up the brakes. It was him or the bale, so I really put on the binders and somebody came up the inside of me. That was not pretty.
I made a change going into the semi and that was not good, so we went the opposite way for the main event and hoped she would work. It actually felt pretty good! I don’t think that there was a perfect setup on this track today. What helped with the benefit of that change though in the main, I got off the gate good and it followed the ground.
Your start. You did not get the best jump, but your line through the first turn was pretty sneaky. Was that something that you saw before, where you could sneak underneath like that?
That was my only choice. I would rather be on the inside, try to get the jump and come over on the guys than be on the outside where everyone would start pushing. It worked out good. I think it was Cooper [Webb] who was on the right side of me and I thought I had it, but then here comes Cooper. I would rather be second than buried in the pack, you know. I got a good jump – that is all.
It is a pretty unforgiving sport. How hard is it to find that fine line of pushing, but being able to be there for seventeen rounds?
That is a tough one to answer. I think that was where I was at with outdoors; you are trying your best, giving it your all and you make a mistake. Sometimes it costs you. Then again, you cannot ride scared out there either. You have to enjoy it a little bit. The pace is only getting faster, the riders are only getting better and with the equipment we are only going faster.
Dirt Wurx did a great job, and it is not their fault, but when you cover it the rain has got to go somewhere in those transitions, so it creates a little bit of a soft spot. We saw it last week in San Diego. Nobody is at fault, it is just Mother Nature and what happens. You just make a mistake; I try to do the best I can. When things were getting sketchy at the end of the race, I have got to know.
In the scheme of things, like at Lakewood in Colorado, you are going for it and make a mistake. You are going that fast, so sometimes you save it and sometimes you do not. You hope and pray for health and safety for all of the riders. Gosh, it is a tough question. You hate to see stuff like that happen tonight. I just hope he is okay, I don’t wish that upon anybody. Especially the sport, we need him. We need a guy like that. It is unfortunate at times, but let’s hope that he is okay too. It is not like he is down and out. Hopefully he is okay too.
