SOUTH WEST MOTOCROSS CLUB MATT JONES MEMORIAL RACE REPORT

South west motocross club headed to the famous Landrake moto park circuit  near plymouth, to host the Matt Jones memorial event of 2013.

After a highly successful event taking place back in 2012, Chris Jones, Matt Jones’s dad, kindly gave South west the permission to run it again this year!
The event took place on June 2nd and this was also round five of the South west motocross clubs, 2013 summer championship.
A bumper entry of riders attended the meeting all paying high respects to Matt Jones riding in his memory.
Chris Jones donated some brilliant prizes consisting of trophies to top six for all youth class’s and VMX, with the top three riders from MX1 and MX2 receiving prize money!
On the days lunch break  an auction was held consisting of items such as race shirts, and front number plates from professional racers from top riders including Jeffery Herlings.
All raised funds from this auction have been sent to the Devon air ambulance, and Wings for life foundation  (Spinal research)
And the Club would again like to thank everyone for there generous contributions and attendance to the meeting.
Fantastic preparations to the track were in place as expected from land owner Phil Congdon, who always gets the track to a perfect standard for each and every event.
After a minute silence in Matt’s memory and after the practice block, the MX2 classed competitors were lined to the gates for the opening moto of the day.
The Gates dropped and the almost full pack or riders charged up the start straight battling for the early advantages, Josh Taylor edged to the front taking the holeshot.
Super fast 125 2 stroke rider, Will Worden was soon to pass Josh taking the lead.
Leighton Holmes was also running up front at top speed on his 2 stroke husqvarna showing lose style.
With Harry Sellwood also at the front of the pack, the racing action in moto one was fast and furious.
After performing outstanding speeds on the KTM 125cc machine, Will Worden took the MX2 moto race one win. With Leighton Holmes and Josh Taylor close by.
After a outstanding ride on the 125 in moto one, Will Worden was back to the lead at the start of the MX2 two class’s second race. Josh Taylor resulted well in moto one, but was riding at a slower pace in moto two, but gave it his all to the end after Will Worden past the flag.
After two perfectly achieved race wins, Will Worden was seen out front once again dominating further more in the final MX2 moto of the day. After not such a great performance in moto two, young Josh Taylor up’d his game,  challenging the opposition at the front of the pack once again in great form.
Riding to a high standard ability, Leighton Holmes looked strong aboard his 125.
Dominating the MX2 division Will Worden rightfully claimed overall victory taking the home the biggest amount of prize money.
Riding a not so popular Husqvarna race machine, Leighton Holmes took runners up honours on the day.
Taking the final bit of prize money home was Ryan Allen in third.
Whilst missing out on the money, Josh Taylor respectively took fourth place after  three strong finishes.
Whilst Darren Sleeman had an enjoyable day at his first ever Race event finishing ahead of Chris Freeman.
The MX1 division raced with the VMX class.
A cracking entry of riders attended for the MX1 class with some of the south west’s top riders being in the mix.
With some decent VMX riders racing alongside the racing in this class was some of the best!
The gates fell to the dirt for the start of MX1 moto one, and the Suzuki of Kelvin Townsend grabbed the race holeshot.
With the early holeshot advantage Kelvin Townsend was showing great form in the lead, but a few laps into the moto was accompanied with high pressures from Red Bull pro national contender, Tommy Alba who was on great form on the Dirtbike Express backed Honda CRF.
When the finish flag flew it was Tommy Alba that claimed the moto one win, after taking the lead away from hard trying Townsend.
The second MX1 and VMX class moto saw moto one winner Tommy Alba grab the holeshot this time.
But Kelvin Townsend was on hot pursuit showing fantastic speed and determination. Feeling the pressures behind him, Alba made a mistake allowing Townsend into the lead wear he remained for a few laps!
But Tommy Alba re grouped his mind and later took the lead when it was most important taking the race win!
The VMX racers did well once more, with Richard Birch standing out on the track, showing a great improvement in confidence after moto one. Whilst MX1 categorized rider Scott Ardren resulted in the top few.
With the dry conditions all day, the track became rough by the final moto of the day, making moto three the toughest of the day.
After more battling with Kelvin Townsend, Tommy Alba edged away from him to take the overall victory!
Kelvin Townsend displayed a remarkable amount of determination and talented riding taking second placed overall highly respectively.
The last of the MX1 prize money was snapped up by Scott Ardren who took three superb results grabbing lots of points to his championship score.
The number one Trophy for the VMX riders went to Paul Ayres after a great days riding.
Ben Braddick took three great results to secure second place ahead of Third and fourth placed riders, Steve Chugg and Adrian Retallack. Ben spring grabbed fifth away from sixth placed Rick Furse.
Whilst Ian Carter, and  Richard Birch claimed seventh and eighth.
Some strong youth talent attend the race meeting, and the rookies division got the spectators hearts pounding with some fantastic racing being on display.
Cornwall’s competitive Josh Gilbert  was on a strong  pace right after the drop of the gates for Rookies moto one, but despite a great form, Josh was closely accompanied by Dean Symons, and Jack Roberts.
Dean was showing some great riding being the top 2 stroker in the pack, but pushing himself to hard, Dean fell to the ground allowing Jack Roberts to pass, but Dean was soon to be back on his bike as the battles continued till the end of the moto where Josh Gilbert was seen taking the race win.
Rookies moto two was soon to take place, Josh Gilbert tore up the start straight edging from the other racers to take the race holeshot. Close in check also riding at high speeds were again, Dean Symons and Jack Roberts.
After some poor and unfortunate luck at recent rounds, Jack Roberts was seen having a much more enjoyable days riding, with his riding reflecting this.
After not showing his true capabilities in the opening moto, Joe Eiffert stepped up his game and was having a much improved ride mixing well towards the front of the pack.
Jack Roberts was seen riding to the best of his ability trying to hunt down Dean Symons who was pushing hard but this time keeping it on two wheels.
Jack Roberts had a change in luck and was then seen falling to the ground looking to be in pain from a slight injury he got at the previous club championship at cheddar.
Josh Gilbert kept smashing fast laps, taking the moto two win!
After a more continued strong riding from the usual front runners as well as the rest of the competition.
It was Josh Gilbert to take the number one trophy after three perfect results.
After battling with Jack Roberts from the first drop of the gates, Dean Symons edged him to take runners up honours.
A mix of fortunes was had for Jack Roberts but his hard fought efforts were credited with third at the end of the day.
Fourth was claimed by Harry Davey, whilst Jack Conway Baker and Charlie Page snapped up the last of the trophies.
Whilst Jack Grant took twentieth after three good race results were claimed.
 Big wheel and small wheel 85cc classes competed together for the days racing.
From the start of the opening moto it was clear the two top boys to watch in the mixed group were the KTM riders, of Jake Curtis Stevens and Corey Hockey, who traveled far after a great performance at the cheddar 2 day meeting.
After a very hot  battle at the front between the two front runners, the rest of the small wheel and big wheel competitors were pushing there riding abilities to the limit, with Alfie Crocker also showing great speeds. Jake Curtis Stevens passed the finish flag first taking first in the opening moto.
After claiming moto one race win, Jake gated to the line with confidence advantages over racing rival Corey Hockey, as the two were set to battle out front another time.
Looking fast out of the small wheel division, Ryan Mundell was seen flying in great heights over each and every single jump, doing every thing he possibly could to hunt down Jack Booker up front.Whilst Jamie Wenman raced to well finishing in a solid  mid pack position.
The gates dropped for the third and final 85cc division race, Jake Curtis Stevens had a perfect start taking the moto holeshot.
Whilst a poor start was had by Corey Hockey who was seen slightly down the ranks around tenth.
Corey Hockey step’d up his game and flew round the outside corner in great style quickly passing other riders.
After the advantage of taking the holeshot, Jake Curtis Stevens was seen settling into a fast and smooth pace.
But Corey Hockey was standing out to the spectators charging hard to try take the lead.
Corey Hockey smashed in some great lap times and closed in on Jake despite his strong riding. 
Corey Hockey grabbed the lead and was looking set to take the win.
But with just a couple laps to go problems struck Hockey, and  it was Jake Curtis Stevens to be seen first over the far side of the track. 
Jake went on to take the moto win.
Whilst Harry Pritchard grabbed a good enough result to bag the big wheel overall win. 
Corey Hockey missed on what was set to be a moto three race win, but respectively finished the weekend in a solid fourth overall. 
Jack Booker grabbed overall victory in the small wheels leaving the runner up spot to Ryan Mundell. 
Whilst high flyer Thomas Andrew took  three strong results to grab third overall!  

The young 65cc riders performed to a great standard, some great racing action was seen by the youngsters.
The opening moto had Tyler Rowe dominating up the front of the pack with Jason Down in close check. 
Tyler Rowe took the moto one win with Jason Down taking second spot shortly behind. 
Taking third was young cornish man Connor Jago after strong performance from gate to flag.
The great racing seen in moto one was continued in the junior 65cc moto’s two and three. 
Tyler Rowe was clearly the guy to beat with Jason Down and Thomas Darlow showing great determination once again. 
The third and final race came to and end with Tyler Rowe securing overall victory. 
Jason Down grabbed the runner ups honors after having three very strong rides. 
Thomas Darlow was seen taking third overall!
Whilst cornish racer Connor Jago had one of his best ever rides finishing the weekend in fourth overall.
After a enjoyable days racing Josh Wase went home finishing in tenth. 
The smallest and youngest riders of the Automatic category, showed brilliant racing at the fantastic landrake moto park circuit. 
The number 777 plated KTM of Bradley Way was up toward the  front in the early stages showing great speed and style. 
Some great racing was being had within the whole of the pack and Bradley Way just missed out on the opening race win after a greaT fight against  Finley James.
Moto two again had some great racing by the young riders, Bradley Way again was seen at the front of the pack but later fell down the ranks after taking an unfortunate tumble. 
At the close of the third and final auto moto, it was Ben Zeale to finish the day in full glory taking the overall win. 
Second was credited to Bradley Way who tried his hardest in all three races. 
Riley Watts came fourth just missing out on taking third place from, moto one winner Finley James.
George Oakley picked up three solid results to finish him in seventh overall.

Michelin MX Nationals – Race Report, Rnd 2 – Monster Mountain

Last weekend the new Monster Mountain facility staged its first event, round two of the Michelin MX Nationals powered by Milwaukee, and what an action-packed weekend it was! With almost 300 hundred riders keen to get on the new track and a tremendous crowd for the MX Nationals, both enjoyed the two days of fast and hot motocross action.

If you haven’t seen the images and videos on social media, Monster Mountain is a USA- styled track set on top of a Welsh mountain. With months and months of hard, back-breaking work that involved moving hundreds of tons of earth with machines the size of a small house, the Monster Mountain track was born, and the scale of the project was mind-blowing. Once you have climbed up the mountain’s side to the peak, you enter a landscape that could be easily mistaken for Pala or even the moon.

The Leatt Pro MX1s were mainly about three riders, the Crendon Fastrack Honda pairing of Conrad Mewse and Josh Gilbert and Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha rider Harri Kullas. The winner would come from one of these riders, who have dominated the home racing scene all year.

Kullas got the holeshot at the start of the first combined MX1 and MX2 pro race but was quickly passed a quarter of the way around the opening lap by Mewse and then his teammate Gilbert, who had gated third, slipped by Kullas before the end of the lap. While this happened, John Adamson (ASA United GasGas) got cross threaded in one of the deep ruts and dropped from fourth to tenth.

Adamson’s teammate Ivo Monticelli, who was making a comeback from an injury he suffered at round one of the Revo series, took full advantage of his teammate Adamson’s problems and took over his fourth place as Jason Meara (JM 10 Moto-cycle Racing Honda), Tom Grimshaw (Chambers Racing), Charlie Putnam (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna), Jamie Carpenter (Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha), and Dan Thornhill (Chambers Racing) all moved up a place at Adamson’s expense.

The leading four riders of Mewse, Gilbert, Kullas, and Monticelli stayed in the same running order to the end of the race as Meara and Grimshaw fought over fifth place. The two riders changed position many times till, on lap eight, Meara suffered a mechanical failure, leaving Grimshaw to make fifth all his own.

Adamson was on a charge after his crash and fought back to sixth at the end of the race, while Putnam came off his machine, relegating himself back to thirtieth place.

The immense new track, with its long start straights and big jumps, and even an adverse camber turn, was always going to disadvantage the smaller Apico MX2 machines over the power of the Leatt MX1 machines, with Glen McCormick (Chambers Racing) being the first of the MX2s around turn one, followed by Jamie Wainwright (WPH/SBE/Redline KTM) and Carlton Husband (Phoenix EvenStrokes Kawasaki) as race favourite Charlie Cole (Blades Bikes Kawasaki) suffering a mechanical problem that saw him at the back of the pack with a lot of work to do.

Wainwright had passed McCormick to lead the MX2s by the end of the first lap as Husband slipped back three places. But, as the race continued, Husband upped his pace and repassed six other riders on his way to tenth in the race, but first MX2 home.

McCormick put on a last-lap charge and snatched a place from the hands of Wainwright as the pair finished eleventh and thirteenth on the track but second and third in the MX2s, as for the unlucky Cole. He regrouped and fought his way back from thirtieth to finish fifteenth in the race but fourth MX2 and the last person on the lead lap.

Kullas once again got the holeshot at the start of race two, and once again, Gilbert found a way past him by the end of the lap. Behind them, it was Grimshaw, Meara, Monticelli, Mewse and Carpenter.

Grimshaw took his time in the opening laps and slipped back to sixth. Mewse slid past Monticelli on the second lap to take over third place, with Meara relegated to fifth.

While Grimshaw and Carpenter fought over sixth place, the running order of Gilbert from Kullas, Mewse, Monticelli, and Meara stayed the same till the very last lap when Mewse used the backmarkers to snatch second place from Kullas, and with it second overall for the meeting. (MX Vice was witness to the incident that cost Kullas second place, where two MX2 riders fell in a rut that Harri had already committed to, leaving the Yamaha man to haul his bike out of the massively deep inside rut as Conrad tiptoed around the outside of them, probably laughing his head off!).

On the Apico MX2 side of race two, Cole had gated tenth but had Wainwright in his wheel tracks and McCormick two places further back as they battled for the MX2 lead amongst the bigger MX1 machines.

After changing the lead with Wainwright several times, Cole established himself eighth on the track but first of the MX2s. Wainwright finished in tenth place for the second MX2, with McCormick third. Unfortunately, Husband didn’t get the start he wanted and didn’t seem to get going as he finished sixth MX2, behind Joe Brooks and Charlie Heyman (Tru7 Honda).           

With three race wins and a second place, Ben Edwards won the RFX expert MX1s from race one winner and wildcard rider Josh Waterman. Jayden Ashwell (AJP Geartec Husqvarna) was third, with Jay McCrum missing a podium position.

Ashley Greedy (Darjen Contractors Gas Gas) won his first three races in the RFX MX2s, but while in the lead of his fourth and final race of the weekend, he was passed by Jimmy Margetson (AJP Geartec Husqvarna) on his way to second overall, with Mathew Bayliss (Darjen Contractors Gas Gas).

Ash Greedy had a great weekend on home territory.

Wildcard rider Scott Elderfield won three out of his four races on his way to the Motoverde amateur MX1 overall, with race four winner Sean Wainwright (Fasteddy Racing Honda) second. Josh Greedy (Darjen Contractors Kawasaki) tied in third with Luke Mellows (Forty-Four Honda).

Wildcard riders took three out of the top four places in the Motoverde amateur MX2 class as Ben Clarke, with two wins and two third places, took the overall from race two winner Raife Broadley (723 Race Bikes Gas Gas) while the winner of the last race Wal Beaney was third, just five points behind the winner.

Tallon Aspden (LA Groundwork KTM), with three wins and a second place, won the Worx clubman MX1s from Darren Manning-Coe, who was second in all four of his races as Daniel Chapman, the winner of the last race of the weekend was third as Drew Lane just missed out on the podium by two points.

Sam Ongley (Fantic) won all four Spiral GFX clubman MX2 races from Matt Tolly and Charlie West.

In the youth Fly Futures MXY2s, Billy Askew (GTCi Revo Kawasaki) won all four races and remains unbeaten this year. Behind him, Domonic Newbury (426 Motorsport KTM) and Mackenzie Marshall (DK Offroad KTM) were separated by just three points as they finished the weekend in second and third overall.

Billy Askew (441) already has his nose in front of Domonic Newbury (404), Mackenzie Marshall (555) and Jak Taylor (22, WM Tatchell Husqvarna).

Reece Jones (SJP Moto Husqvarna) was third in his first race of the weekend, but from then on won the other three for first overall in the Fly MXY125s. Jake Walker (Mr T Racing KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top four all weekend, was second, with a race-three low score pushing Tyla Hooley (Fantic) down to third.

Josh Vail (SJP Moto Husqvarna), with two race wins, a second and a third place, took the overall win in the Syntol Big Wheel 85s with Jamie Keith (MBR X&P KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top three all weekend, second and Charlie Richmond third.

With a couple of wins and two-second places, Joel Winstanley-Dawson (Techsource Racing KTM) won the Syntol small wheel 85s from race one winner Lucas Lee (Husqvarna) and Ollie Truman.
