I have flip-flopped on my predictions a ton, for reasons that I cannot even explain. I was stuck between the picks above or going with The Netherlands, United States and Belgium in that order. Why is it that those rankings are on my mind? The Netherlands are obviously the favourites to win this and will do so barring a disaster. There is not much more to say on that topic. Why am I struggling to settle on either France or the United States in second place? Well, I think that both countries are going to be good enough to land in that position.

I also think that both France and The Netherlands have the potential to struggle, make some missteps and then ultimately miss out on silverware as a result of that. I have gone with France in the end simply because Gautier Paulin should deliver reasonable results that will lower their score significantly. I will make this very clear though: The scores will be higher than normal for the teams in second and third. I honestly think that The Netherlands will dominate in a similar fashion to Team USA at Budds Creek in 2007. Finally, I put Team Belgium into third solely because they should be quite consistent and that will serve them well in the end. I do not think that they will be able to achieve more than that though.

Like many, I have been really impressed with the preparation of Team USA this year. Their approach has been understated and they have focused their attention on training on the best sand tracks across Europe for the past month ensuring bike set-up should not be an issue. They have to enter the race feeling a greater sense of confidence, as a result of that. I fancy them to claim a podium here in Assen, but I cannot look past the home team for the overall this weekend.

Team Netherlands had the luxury of selecting four riders capable of winning their class in the lead-up to the race, an embarrassment of riches that other countries have not had this year due to injury.  I can actually see Jeffrey Herlings, Glenn Coldenhoff and Calvin Vlaanderen winning with a points total that rivals the eight points that took Team USA to victory in 2007. Trailing them will be Jason Anderson, Zach Osborne and Justin Cooper who take a deserved second, leaving the reigning champions Team France to round out the podium.

If you had told me eight weeks ago that I would write my predictions the week prior to the MXoN and not have France on the podium, I would have thought you were mad. That is exactly where we are though! Injuries have brutally hit a significant number of riders, resulting in a unique line-up for multiple teams. All of the pressure will be on the home team but despite that I still expect them to pull through. Jeffrey Herlings should be able to win both motos and Glenn Coldenhoff could be a podium threat based on recent form. Calvin Vlaanderen simply needs to be inside the top fifteen, and then that would be enough to clinch.

Team USA seem to have a different approach coming into this race and it is one that they can only benefit them – I expect to see them in second. They have a real opportunity to win if the Dutch encounter any issues, and it is the first time in a long time I can honestly say that. Justin Cooper might be the weak link in the team, but he has had a break and will be extremely hungry to deliver for his country. What about third place? I honestly have no idea. Flip a coin. The updated British team has a shot, as does France with the B-team they are fielding. Let’s not forget the Belgians who are close to home and on a familiar surface.
