Practice Report: Anaheim 1

Insight and analysis following practice.

on

Countless names jumped off the page when perusing the entry lists ahead of the first Monster Energy Supercross round, hence why most were excited about the prospect of an unpredictable season. A majority of pundits tend to focus on Ken Roczen, however, when naming riders who could potentially rise above the rest, hence why he is arguably the most intriguing talent in the field.

It seemed that he was indeed going to take a step forward and control of the sport, as he romped to the fastest time in the first of two practice sessions. Roczen was powerless in the final session though; Marvin Musquin recorded a time that could not be matched. The fact that an underrated rider like the Frenchman posted a time such as that speaks volumes about the series and premier class.

The conditions here may actually favour Musquin, especially as they continue to break down. The fact that the battleground is fairly tame, in an attempt to keep more riders healthy as we embark on a seventeen-race series, should suit him too, as intimidating whoops are not a factor. Instead there are some smaller obstacles, where a rider with a smooth and precise nature will thrive.

Those are the types of tracks that Musquin looks forward to, but the problem is that his competitors do not exactly struggle in these conditions. Roczen has looked great all day, but then Eli Tomac and Jason Anderson entered the fray in the final session. It really is quite unpredictable and, unfortunately, it will come down to the start, as there is nothing to separate the elite riders.

What other noteworthy points emerged in the 450SX class? Blake Baggett quietly posted the sixth fastest time overall, which supports some of the hype that has surrounded him in recent weeks. Ryan Dungey was one spot further back and, truthfully, fairly forgettable. Dungey will always turn it on when the gates drop though, hence why it is only right that you consider him a threat for a spot on the podium at the very least. ‘1’ did spend an unusual amount of time in the mechanics area.

Chad Reed was next in line, posting the eighth fastest time, which is right around where he finishes in most practice sessions. Reed’s strengths do not lie in the timed qualifying sessions, so the fact that he is so close to the front and was on the board at one point is promising. Finally, a nod to Dean Wilson. The Scotsman ran as high as ninth in the second session, despite bobbling and losing a considerable amount of time on his fast lap, and looked comfortable as he threw the bike around.

Jeremy Martin set the pace in the 250SX West division.

Onto the 250SX West division, where the picture is just as perplexing. It initially seemed as though Aaron Plessinger was going to occupy the title of ‘favourite’ as we move forward, but then Jeremy Martin stepped up in the next session. Are we looking at a two-horse race for the main event win? Perhaps, although Justin Hill and Mitchell Oldenburg must be considered relevant.

There are some areas where the 250SX riders can make up time out there, as Bradley Taft demonstrated in the 250SX B group. Tripling in and doubling out of the section after the sand appeared to aid him massively as he charged towards the front in his group, which was lacking some star power, but then no riders did it in the following group (as far as we saw). Taft ensured that all of the hype does not travel in the direction of Austin Forkner.

Where will Austin Forkner fit in during his supercross debut?

Sean Ogden

Forkner, by the way, was in the mix with the sixth fastest time. Although some would look for more from the prodigy, it is a solid start to his indoor career. The fact that he is great at starts, whereas Martin and Plessinger struggle in that area, means that he could move up and stand atop the box quite easily.

There you have it, a look at some of the stories that are buried in the foundations of each class. If there is one thing to take from this column, it is that things are just as unpredictable after a couple of practice sessions. Certain stars are starting to rise to the top, however, and claim some momentum.
