MXGP World Championship
Pinpoint: MX2 and Britain
A new era begins in MX2.
Whilst perusing some of the statistics that have been gathered on this very site across the last twelve months, it became apparent that Great Britain is in a transitional phase in the 250F division. A handful of riders, such as Tommy Searle and Max Anstie, have put the Union Jack atop the MX2 podium across the last fourteen years, but the nation will potentially go winless in the category again this season.
Twenty-three of the two hundred and twenty-eight MX2 events that have been run have been won by British riders. How does that compare to some of the other nations across the globe? France have won thirty events through the same period, which may not be as high as some onlookers would have thought, whereas Italy have claimed thirty-three of the victories. The Netherlands are leading the way with sixty-two wins in total and obviously have Jeffrey Herlings to thank for that. The three-time MX2 champion won sixty-one events throughout his 250F career, but Marc de Reuver kicked things off for the nation with a single win in Bulgaria in 2006.
The Netherlands are obviously quite far ahead of the other countries, but there is a battle raging on between those in the background. Great Britain, Italy and France are fairly close and could easily trade positions across the next twelve months. It is rather unlikely that any French or Italian riders will win in MX2 this season, however, as none of those guys are quite on that level yet. There is no denying the fact that David Herbreteau and Michele Cervellin have potential, but it just will not happen this year. The same goes for Stephen Rubini and Samuele Bernardini. However, the latter did win a moto in the Indonesian slop a year ago.
What about those who hail from Great Britain? This is particularly intriguing, hence the reason for this column. The three British stars in MX2 (Adam Sterry, Ben Watson and Conrad Mewse) have not yet won a race at the highest level, but that milestone may not be too far off. Would it really be surprising if all three of those riders claim a moto win at some point this season? There is no doubt that it will probably happen sooner rather than later, hence why a new era may be about to begin for the British fans who follow the FIM Motocross World Championship.
Adam Sterry, Ben Watson and Conrad Mewse get along well away from the track and that should create an interesting dynamic. There is no doubt that the trio will be battling it out countless times this season, so who is going to be the next guy to step up and steal the hearts of British fans? Mewse showed an incredible amount of raw speed last season and may have found a way to harness that with Hitachi KTM UK. Uncovering the bursts of speed is undoubtedly the hardest quality to master, so there is no reason to worry about that, and Watson also showed that he can run the pace on all surfaces.
Those two, Conrad Mewse and Ben Watson, were actually remarkably close this year, despite the troubles that they faced along the way. Just three points separated them in the final standings! They effectively had the same average finish across nineteen rounds as well. There is a wildcard who could end up beating them both though, as most pundits seem to have forgotten just how capable Adam Sterry is. It is easy to forget that he was in contention for a spot on the podium when he dropped out with an injury in April. It is almost impossible to predict how each rider will fare when the gates drop in Argentina.
It will take quite a while for one of those riders to match the level that certain British riders have reached in MX2 in the past. Tommy Searle is fourth on the list of all-time winners in the class, with fourteen Grand Prix victories and twenty-five moto wins to his name. Max Anstie is next up with six overall wins to his name. Stephen Sword and Billy Mackenzie are the only other MX2 overall winners from Britain, but Carl Nunn and Shaun Simpson did win a moto each during their time in the class. How long will it be until another name is added to that list? Time will tell, but it may not be long at all.

//PEARCY Stats Preview MXGP Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos
Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
