Insight: Masterful Kay de Wolf gunning for more glory in Germany

Read here.

The sense of relief, joy and excitement was evident as Kay de Wolf crossed the finish line in the second moto at Latvia to secure his first ever MX2 overall victory.

Words: Edward Stratmann | Lead Image: Ray Archer

Having come so close in the past, it was fitting he marked the occasion by going 1-1 even if he needed some luck in the finale, in what was a day to remember for the Dutch sensation.

When speaking after the race, his outpouring of emotion was fantastic to watch, with it clear to see how much this moment meant to him after all his hard work over the years to get to this point.

Seeing as he also triumphed in the qualification race, this ensured the #74 secured maximum points to not only stamp his authority on his adversaries, but also to grab the coveted red plate.

“This is amazing. I have the red plate and finally got my first overall win as an MX2 rider. We had to wait a while for this, but we kept on fighting. I need to give a lot of credit to the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing team. It is an amazing team and we always push forward. I am excited to go racing again in Germany,” he insisted.

Ray Archer

A win that was a long time coming for the man in his third year in MX2 and competing in his 41st GP, he’ll be hoping this is the catalyst for the floodgates to open. Indeed, with Jago Geerts still on the sidelines for the immediate future, the MXGP of Germany offers another tremendous opportunity to flex his muscles over title rivals Thibault Benistant and Andrea Adamo.

Even though the hard pack surface at Teutschenthal doesn’t suit him as much as the soft stuff, there’s no doubting he’ll still be a force to be reckoned with, for he’s a complete package on a range of terrain.

By the numbers this term, his six moto podiums, four overall podiums, three moto wins, two qualifying race wins and seven top five overalls have illustrated his admirable consistency and capacity to rack up the points.

The challenge now will be maintaining this momentum, but being in such a fantastic framework and in an ideal environment for success under the Nestaan awning, plus working alongside masterful trainer Ruben Tureluren, everything is in place for him to keep along his upward curve.

Unquestionably one of the most gifted riders on the planet, primed for a full assault on the 2023 MX2 crown and with a massive future ahead of him, however his career pans out, he’ll always look back on his maiden victory in Latvia with immense satisfaction in a performance that emphatically underlined why the sky’s the limit for what he can achieve in the sport.
