MXGP and MX2 battles rage on.

Published

on

Loket always seem to mark the beginning of the end. Seeing as the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic always occupies a date towards the end of July, it is just known that when the hard-pack circuit springs into life that the end of the current term must be near. There are still seven rounds left to run, so there is a lot of racing to go, but those will pass in the blink of an eye.

With fourteen motos left in the MXGP and MX2 classes, there are plenty of battles that will continue to rage on and have a large impact on the way that certain riders are perceived. There are the battles for each championship that are going to rage on until the very end of the season, which will be highlighted elsewhere on MX Vice this week, but what about the duels lower down the order?

Third in MXGP

Clement Desalle has a fairly tight grip on third in the premier-class standings currently. Thirty-seven points is the gap between him and Tim Gajser in fourth, then Romain Febvre is forty-seven points down. Although that may not seem like much of a fight currently, Desalle has only had two podium finishes in the last three months. So, if that trends continues, there will be an opportunity for another rider to gain ground and potentially rip the bronze medal from him. Desalle has scored two hundred and thirty-five points across the last seven rounds, whereas Gajser has acquired two hundred and sixty-three. It is quite clear that it would not take too much for these positions to switch around.

Romain Febvre obviously occupies fifth in this class currently and is just ten points further back than Tim Gajser, so why is he not thought of as much of a threat? In order to gain substantial ground across the next seven rounds, consistency is needed and that is a trait that he has struggled to master recently. Although, admittedly, there have only been three poor motos across the last seven rounds. Those are the reason why he is so far behind Clement Desalle currently. There is a fourth guy, Gautier Paulin, in this fight. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider is more than fifty down though and needs a lot of help to leapfrog the three riders ahead of him.

Tenth in MXGP

The fight for tenth in the premier-class standings contains many different characters who would want to slip into the top ten for different reasons. Max Nagl currently holds that position and finishing there would have been a positive way to end his maiden term aboard the unique TM. It now seems that he will miss the next two rounds, however, as he sustained a finger injury this past weekend. The ailment effectively leaves the door wide open for someone else to slot into the top ten. Evgeny Bobryshev is just ten points back and claiming tenth in the championship standings would be a great way to end his first year without full-factory machinery. It would be something to build on.

Max Anstie is five points behind Evgeny Bobryshev and undoubtedly the favourite to take tenth, if not finish higher. There are sixty-eight points between him and Jeremy Van Horebeek in ninth currently, so it is a big gap to overcome in seven rounds. Van Horebeek has a tendency to not score points in a couple of motos, however, and Anstie appears to be back on the right track now as well. It will be most interesting to see how close things are by the time that the last chequered flag waves at the Italian Grand Prix. There is almost no doubt that will begin to tighten up in the coming weeks.

Alessandro Lupino is in the fight for tenth too and it would arguably be the biggest surprise of the season if he pulls it off. How many people would have bet on him slotting into the top ten at the end of the season? It is not like he has come close to that before, in the premier division anyway, so it would be an impressive turn of events. Although he has been great this season, he will have to overcome some heavyweights to get there. Julien Lieber is a little further back and would need help to get into the top ten, so it is unlikely. The battle for tenth, or even ninth, is wide open!

Third in MX2

A battle that is more intriguing than most believe. It would be quite the statement if Ben Watson rips the bronze medal from Thomas Kjer Olsen, especially considering where he was at a year ago. It would put an exclamation point on his season. Will it happen? Honestly, it does seem as though he has more in the tank at this point. Watson has not stood on the podium since the start of May, admittedly, but he has been so close so many times that no one really cares about that. There is no doubt that he could have done it on a few different occasions.

It does not seem as though Thomas Kjer Olsen has been quite as close though, but then maybe that is down to expectations? Olsen was obviously expected to contend for wins regularly this year and never stray from the top five, so he has more of a spotlight on him when he struggles. It will actually be interesting to see how close Calvin Vlaanderen and Thomas Covington get to those two as well, as both riders are on a run currently and should continue to edge closer. It is unlikely that either rider will take third or fourth across the next seven rounds, unless disaster strikes, but it is still going to be interesting to see what they can do. It would be a sign of what could have been.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
