Ask Vice Anything: #11

Your MXGP questions answered.

Published

on

After attending many events on different continents, the MX Vice team have acquired answers to a lot of questions that you may have. That is why it seemed like a brilliant idea to open things up in this new feature! If you have something on your mind and want to be featured, email [email protected] or get in contact via our various social media channels.

“What about TG243? Will he be fit for Valkenswaard or will we have to wait until RedSand?” asked @TheMakx on Twitter.

Tim Gajser will be racing at Valkenswaard this weekend, which was revealed on MX Vice yesterday. Is it early for him to return to competition? Perhaps, as it will be a month exactly since he fractured his jaw when he rocks up behind the starting line. I presume that he is returning so soon in an effort to keep his title hopes alive, because he is not exactly out of it yet. Forty-seven points separate him from the current series leaders, Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli, and overcoming that is not out of the question. There have been countless champions who have won by larger margins.

It would be extremely difficult for Tim Gajser to move past both of those heavyweights though, unless there are injuries or mechanical failures. Gajser would have to be perfect through the remaining eighteen rounds as well and, based on the mistakes that he has made in recent years, it would be rather surprising to see him become a model of consistency. Time will tell whether he is going to be up to speed at the Grand Prix of Europe. – @_LewisPhillips

“Quick one for you guys after the GP and Dutch Masters yesterday, what are your thoughts on Davy Pootjes?” asked @LittleChrisCam on Twitter.

I still rate Davy Pootjes quite highly, simply because there are frequent flashes of speed, but it is time to question whether the results are ever going to materialise. Pundits still cling to how amazing he was in the EMX125 division and, truthfully, his prowess aboard the two-stroke was breathtaking. There has not really been proof that he is just as good as that aboard the 250F though. Injuries have had something to do with that, of course, but there have not exactly been any noteworthy moments since he stepped up.

Now, admittedly, he did finish third in a moto in his rookie season in MX2. Do we cling to that? It was a little under four years ago now and there have been a lot of injuries since then. However, with that in mind, it would not be surprising at all to see him reel off more podiums this season. Is he going to get it together and challenge for a title across a season or consistent victories? The data that is in play currently suggests that may be a stretch too far. Arm pump hindered him at the Grand Prix of Patagonia-Argentina, but everyone knows that he is better than what he showed there. – @_LewisPhillips

“Any news on Jordi Tixier?” asked @MastersMX2013 on Twitter.

Jordi Tixier confirmed a couple of days ago that he should be back on a bike in a couple of weeks, then his goal is to be ready for the Grand Prix of Trentino on April 8. It seems that would mean that he would have around two weeks of bike time to prepare for the event. It is obviously going to take a couple of races for him to get up to speed and perform at his best. Results cannot even be considered a priority at this stage though, one would presume, as he just needs to stay healthy. Tixier has missed eighteen events since he stepped up to the big bike two seasons ago. – @_LewisPhillips

“Have MX Vice travelled to The Netherlands early to visit practice tracks before Valkenswaard?” asked Jon Evans on Facebook.

Yes! It is something that we have always wanted to do and this seemed like the perfect time. The plan was to head to a practice track about thirty minutes from Valkenswaard on Tuesday, but that was flooded, so a handful of elite riders travelled to Grevenbroich in Germany. The sandy track was ridiculously rough and tackled by Jeffrey Herlings, Glenn Coldenhoff, Max Anstie, Gautier Paulin, Kevin Strijbos and Darian Sanayei. It really is like the European version of Southern California! Oh, by the way, the fact that certain tracks are flooded should give you an idea of what conditions are like over here currently.

Published

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
