Richard Watts

It is our sad duty to report that Richard Watts, AMCA licence holder for over 50 years, died suddenly and unexpectedly as a result of an unfortunate farming accident on 27th April, aged 68.

Richard had been racing motocross since 1962 and was a former member of the Phoenix motocross club. In the early 70’s he achieved Expert status and raced a 360CZ.  Richard latterly was a very active member of the AMCA’s Southam MX club riding in the senior class whilst also looking after the large family farm. Up until his untimely death Richard had one of the earliest licence numbers in the AMCA still to be riding competitively and was actually due to race the day after he died. In recent years he rode in excess of 25 times a year and regularly earned his Gold standard licence for frequent riding. Richard took every opportunity to enjoy his motocross racing whenever his farming duties allowed and was a credit to the sport and his club – he will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.

The East Trent Group and Southam Club will be hosting an event in Richard’s memory at Brake Hill Farm on 19th May.

Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Richard Watts at this difficult time.

IMBA MX2(ROUND 2) AT REUSEL, HOLLAND

Reusel in Holland is the venue this weekend for round two of the 2013 IMBA MX2 European Championship. During the opener it was Swiss wild-card rider Patrick Walther who took the overall win ahead of his fellow countryman Andy Baumgartner and reigning IMBA Champion John Cuppen. For the latest action though, Walther is a non-starter so Baumgartner along with a whole host of Dutch sand racing Experts including Cuppen will be the riders to beat.

Representing Team AMCA Great Britain at Reusel will be Jack Cox, Paul Neale, Scott Mathia and Ryan Crowder. Following the Wohlen event, Neale is currently the top Brit holding 6th spot. Indeed Neale was very strong in Switzerland, producing three fast starts and mixing it right up at the front end of each encounter, probably deserving a higher overall finish. At present, Cox holds 10th, Crowder 15th and Mathia 19th. Recovering from an early season hand injury, Crowder will be looking to make a big impression at Reusel whilst Mathia on his new KTM will also be hoping for a big points haul. Yes, it will be tough in the Dutch sand, but this 2013 AMCA Great Britain team is full of quality and determined to succeed!

AMCA 2T AND VETERANS CHAMPIONSHIP R1

All roads lead to the super Brookthorpe circuit in Gloucestershire this weekend, Sunday 5th May, as the Cheltenham Spa MXC host the opening round of the 2013 AMCA Two-Stroke and Veterans Championship. Once again these popular classes have attracted a great entry with both of the 2012 Champions, Adam Harris(Two-Stroke) and Matt Ryder(Veterans) set to defend their hard earned titles.

In the Two-Stroke class, Uley clubman Harris will naturally start as one of the hot favourites but who could provide the main challenge? Well, top ten finishers in 2012, Thomas Herbert(3rd), Sean Wainwright(4th), Stuart West(6th) and Thomas Card(8th) all compete again. Also watch out for the very experienced former top AMCA Championship and IMBA rider, the popular Yorkshireman Danny Blakeley along with other potential spoilers, Rian Warren and Sam Callow. After winning the 2012 AMCA MXY2 Youth Championship, young Luke Ryder will be making his debut in the Two-Stroke series this time around.

Over in the Veterans,Luke’s dad, Matt Ryder leads the entry and is joined by fellow top four finishers from 2012, runner-up Brian Staples, 3rd placed finisher Colin Conduit and Sean Smith who took 4th. In the Veterans you can also throw into the mix for 2013 the likes of Stephen Baddeley, Simon Bracey, Andrew Prosser and David Hopkins who all completed last season’s title race inside the final top ten. Joining the Veterans in 2013 will be Hereford Clubman Terry Lloyd who finished 5th overall in the 2012 Two-Stroke class. This looks set to be another entertaining AMCA Championship series so why not get along to Brookthorpe and watch the action unfold. The circuit is situated on the outskirts of Gloucester, postcode GL4 0UT.
