After a tough round in Portugal, gifted youngster Sacha Coenen spoke to MX Vice’s James Burfield to share his thoughts on his MX2 debut, the track, his brother Lucas, how much he’s looking forward to the Spanish GP and more.

This interview with the Red Bull KTM starlet was also released as an MX Vice post-race podcast, presented by Acerbis.

MX Vice: First race back. You had a good pre-season then you had the injury. How was your day?

Sacha Coenen: Yes, first race back, it was a bit disappointing because I want better results, but it’s like this. We had a really good pre-season and the training was very good. And yeah, I had a not so good weekend, but we keep on building and we will see next weekend. Hope it’s going to be better.

MX Vice: What did you think of the track today?

SC: The track was really nice. I really had fun on the track. Yeah, the starts were really difficult because I was P20 on the grid. First race was quite good, I was 14th at the first corner, but I was well outside so that was not so good. I crashed when I was 10th. I think if I didn’t crash I could have got a good result. I came back to finish 16th. Speed was good, riding was also good, but I can do much better and be with the front guys.

MXV: It’s going to take some time. You need to get a few GPs under your belt just to get back into the swing of racing yeah?

SC: Yeah, I hope it’s not going to take too long. In Spain, I really like the track and I hope to get a really good result. And we will see if I have a good start, as normally I’m in front and everything is good. So yeah, we’ll see next weekend how it is.

MXV: So is there any brotherly rivalry between you and Lucas (laughs)?

SC: No, we’re friendly with each other and just go riding (haha).

MXV: But you do like to beat him (laughs)?

SC: Yeah (laughs), if he’s in front, then he’s better. But if I’m in front of him, I’m better. So it depends which weekend or what track or whatever. But Spain is a really good track. Last time I went there, I was pretty good so I hope to be the same this year.

MXV: So obviously this year is your first time in MX2. Have you set any goals for yourself?

SC: Yeah, in the beginning of the season I didn’t put much pressure on myself. I just want to ride, have fun and do the best I can. And yeah, the results will come. I don’t want to say anything, but in my head, I’m good. I feel that I can get some good results this year.

MXV: Obviously it’s a long season as you’ve got the qualifying races and Sunday races. It’s going to be a case of just pacing yourself, making sure that you limit the mistakes and obviously not getting injured?

SC: Yeah, I really have to get in the flow and just go ride every race and not have any injuries. I need to stay healthy and we will see how it goes.

MX Vice: I’ve been seeing you every week, but we’ve not been able to do a podcast because you’ve been here with your brother. Watching your brother and watching MX2, have you learned anything by being here and watching the other riders?

SC: I don’t watch any of the other riders, only my brother when I’m here. When I’m not riding, I don’t watch any other riders. I only look to my brother because we have a good friendship and we do everything together to be better. We help each other when we can. I look a bit to MXGP because it’s interesting to see what lines they do and things like this.

MXV: Okay, cool. So we’re expecting some fireworks in Spain then with you coming back to a track that you like. So maybe Lucas better look out (laughs)?

SC: Yeah (laughs), hopefully us two are in front. I don’t want to say anything, we’re just going to see and hopefully the fans will see a good show. I need to get some good starts, then everybody can see. I just want to go ride, have fun and do the best I can.

MXV: Cool. I’ll be looking forward to the butt patches this year too to see what you come up with. Thank you and all the best.
