Interview: Romain Febvre

Star Frenchman shares his thoughts.

Making a fantastic return to form on home soil after his savage crash in Spain, Romain Febvre’s MXGP of France was littered with upside, as he went 3-1 for second overall. The result sees him sitting 79 points back from title leader Jorge Prado, as he looks to use this body of work as a catalyst to continue closing the gap.

MX Vice’s James Burfield caught up with the fiercely competitive Kawasaki ace to get his thoughts on the weekend and much more.

This interview was also released as an MX Vice post-race podcast, presented by Acerbis.

MX Vice: Romain, talk us through your weekend?

Romain Febvre: Yeah, after two weeks ago in Spain, I never thought I would be here to ride. And yeah, I managed to do it. But we had some questions about speed, concentration and stuff. Yesterday was a challenging day and obviously it was really hard for me because the track was really sketchy especially when you’re not at 100%.

So yeah, I just took it really safe, but it was not great. So you know, over the night, I was thinking what I could change to feel better today. So obviously this morning, we changed a bit with the bike and it worked. The track was a bit easier today. Yeah, and I managed to get two good starts and then the first moto was a good battle. I was always in the top three and finished third in the race. So I knew in the second moto I could do a little bit better. But not with where I was two weeks ago, I never thought that would be possible, especially this weekend. So yeah, really satisfied with the weekend.

MXV: The second race was super impressive because obviously Jeremy looked in control. He looked like he was gapping you, but then just bit by bit you reeled him in to make the pass. Were you surprised?

RF: Yeah, because I think it was like first moto, he was in front of me before he passed Prado and the speed was matching. But when he passed Prado he took the lead and he just put away a big gap so I think it was his best highlight of the year so far. So yeah, in the second moto, he had confidence and he took the lead again. So yeah he was fully confident. And me not. So sure, he was riding at his best and I beat him at the end. So coming from where I was, I’m really happy with that.

MXV: And looking at the championship after seven rounds and now you’ve kind of had your off one, which was in Spain. Jeffrey, today had his issues in the second race. There’s seven rounds down, we still got another 12 to go. There’s a long time to go for this championship. Do you feel like you’re making great progress to be a contender?

RF: Yeah, that’s the goal. I mean, yeah, we know that the season is long. Yeah, I used more than a joker in Spain, because I missed all the races. That was a lot of points lost. But that’s how it is. I’m happy to be here today. I wouldn’t be here if I felt that it was over. So yeah, I will push till the end. Yeah, on Prado I have a lot of points to catch up, but that’s racing. I will do my best. Like you said ,yes, there’s still many rounds to go so everything is possible. It’s motocross. We saw again this weekend in MX2. So I know with my experience, I had some bad years like this also so you have to be aware and stay away from that. It’s hard because we are pushing the limit every weekend to win, but you have to be between the storm, let’s say.

MXV: One other thing to look out for in the championship is there’s 12 rounds left and 12 qualifying races. That’s 120 points up for grabs.

RF: Sure, now with the qualifying race, it’s like you say, 10 points every time. So if a rival has a bad one, like if they crash on the start of a 20 minute moto, it’s hard to come back so you can gain easily 10 points just like this. So yeah, it’s interesting. But at the same time, like, if you lose the race, then you lose more points. So that’s how it is. So yeah, let’s see.

MXV: Thanks so much for your time and congratulations on a great race.
