It is safe to assume that no one had Justin Brayton down as the first heat-race winner in 2020 Monster Energy Supercross, huh? Brayton came out in Angel Stadium, Southern California, and reminded everyone present what he is capable of yet again. The result in the main event did not quite reflect the way that he performed throughout the night show, but some positive points were picked up and there is clearly more to come. All of that is discussed in this exclusive MX Vice interview.

MX Vice: The end result probably isn’t what you wanted, but ignore that. Push that to one side. Everything else was good. There are positives all across the board. You have got to leave here happy, right?

Justin Brayton: Yeah. I’m pretty happy, for sure. To start the night with that heat win was awesome, with Kenny and I going one and two. That was super cool. The biggest thing that I’m stoked about is my starts. Really all off-season that was my main focus. If we can start up front, we can win some of these races. It just really put a stamp on that, so that’s the main thing. I ran top three for over half the race and ended up getting taken out, but it is what it is. I was still able to get up and still get eighth. A heat win and an eighth with a crash, I’m pretty happy with that. Like I said, the main thing was my starts and the bike was awesome. Really the only way is up from here.

I only saw you getting up, so you got taken out? Are we talking about something proper dirty or just a little love tap?

It was [Jason] Anderson. I honestly didn’t know he was there. I was kind of cutting across this rut and he just came in the rut and got me pretty good. All good. No harm, no foul. Just hard racing. I guess I left the door open, so partly my fault. All good. Like I said, still happy to be able to get up and still get eighth.

It’s been said like a million times this week, but this is effectively round seven or eight for you. With that in mind, did you avoid some of the curveballs that come with round one? Were you quite consistent with your set-up throughout the day and stuff like that?

Yeah. That’s the biggest thing. I’ve been on the same bike for a couple months now, which is really cool because I’ve been able to race several conditions no matter whether it’s in Australia or Europe. I have then come back here and basically been on the same motorcycle, same chassis, same suspension and everything. It was round eight but you still get the Anaheim 1 jitters. I haven’t raced these guys in a while. I haven’t done the full twenty minute plus one lap at that pace in a long time.

A lot of the races I was doing overseas were triple crowns. You still definitely have those moments where you get tight, but overall the day was super smooth. Just stoked to be back with Honda HRC. It really is a dream. I sit up in the lounge in-between races and I’m just like, “This is awesome.” I just really try and embrace these moments. You never know when it will be my last. It was really special to come out and win that heat race the way I did and let everybody know that I’m not done yet.

Now that you are back with the full factory team, was there anything of note today that was like a nice little perk of that? Things that you were like, “I forget you get this treatment or have access to that?”

Yeah, the lounge. I got the whole semi to myself. Kenny is in his bus all the time, so I basically got the whole hospitality semi to myself. That was pretty cool. Just everybody is here with that one common goal. That’s to really do the best we possibly can and achieve our goals, which is to win races and be up front. We fell short of that tonight obviously, but there is still some huge bright spots and some exciting times coming the rest of the season.

You have obviously raced at Anaheim 1 a fair few times now. This track was different to the typical Anaheim 1 in the sense that it wasn’t easy and designed to keep people safe. I thought it was good until you started racing on it but then it quickly became follow the leader. What did you think of it?

It was really gnarly. It was like an east coast round. I think with as much rain as we have gotten in California the track just really deteriorated. I think the spacing that they built, the jumps were really close to the corners and that made us have to accelerate really hard out of the turns to be able to make the jumps – that then created deeper ruts. It was really, really challenging. It was like racing Indy or something, but it was cool. I thought they did a good track design. It raced pretty slow, actually. You couldn’t really get going, because the turns were so slow with such deep ruts.

I’m glad you said that actually, because I thought that some of the transitions were steeper than normal. The triple-triple coming out of turn two. The pocket in the middle there, I was like, “That’s definitely steeper than you typically see.” I was thinking we were back in 2005 and going that route again.

Yeah. There were some of them that were like that, and then some of them that were pretty laid down. I’m mainly just talking about the turns. That’s what got so rutty. They were really deteriorating quick. In-between the jumps they didn’t really rut up too much. They stayed fairly hard. It was good dirt. Overall, good track. Stoked to continue the season.
