Interview: Jago Geerts

Belgian star shares his thoughts.

Published

on

Having lost the MX2 title in heartbreaking fashion in the final moto at the final round of last season to Tom Vialle, Jago Geerts showed little signs of being weighed down by that outcome, for he came out firing at the 2023 opener to enjoy a perfect weekend in Argentina.

Unquestionably one of the top contenders in MX2, the Monster Energy Yamaha star hardly put a foot wrong all weekend, as he put in a brilliant performance to not only win the qualifying race, but also reign triumphant in the two motos.

Riding with intelligence, freedom, clarity and composure, this was the perfect way to begin his push for glory. Geerts caught up with James Burfield after the race to share his thoughts on a superb day at the office.

MX Vice: So first, let’s talk about our initial interview where you mentioned you were going to take it easy, have a little fun and maybe get a top five. What happened (laughs)?

Jago Geerts: Yeah, I don’t know. I missed some races and bike time. When I came on the track here I felt good and I took three good starts so that made it a lot easier. I could do my own thing, ride my pace and that was the most important thing I think.

MXV: I mean, it was great to see because obviously you didn’t know where you were going to be coming into this weekend. So for you to take the win is awesome for you?

JG: Yeah, for sure. I only did one preseason race at Lierop and my speed was quite good there, but I was third twice and had some crashes so it was not the best race for sure. I missed some bike time and then lost some rhythm. But then I came here and it went so smoothly. It’s strange, but it’s amazing what one week can do.

MXV: Is it one of those things where you can’t kind of put your finger on it – did everything just feel right this weekend?

JG: Everything felt right. I was in the right place at the right time the whole weekend. I didn’t make big mistakes so I was consistent the whole weekend.

MXV: So you’ve obviously come away with a good haul of points and the next round is Riola, which has to be pleasing for you obviously?

JG: Yeah, it’s nice to go to Riola next week. It’s a track that I like, a really rough sand track. It’s nice to go there with a red plate and a small points lead so yeah I will try to do the same there – take some good starts and do my thing.

MXV: Congratulations and all the best for Riola and the season ahead.

Spotlight: Consistent Adamo in dreamland after clinching MX2 title

Read here.

Published

on

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ace Andrea Adamo clinched the MX2 World Championship on home soil following a consistent and intelligent effort at Maggiora. Handling the pressure and weight of expectation admirably, this served as a testament to his discipline, maturity and calculated approach.

Here’s a typed up version of what he had to say in the post-race press conference. Thanks to Lorenzo Resta for providing the recording.

Press Conference: How was it to win the title at home in Maggiora, must be really special?

Andrea Adamo: It was fun to win here, you know, most of the week my aim was to try to win the championship today actually. I’m really, really happy about my two races. I did two really consistent races. Unfortunately I didn’t always get good starts – actually really bad starts. And I missed Jago and Simon because I believe that maybe I could fight with them, you know. For me, it was really what I wanted to do because I just want to enjoy my races and stuff. And not to think too much, which isn’t easy. But, today, somehow, I don’t know why, I was doing it quite well, not thinking too much and just enjoying my races.

But yeah, the only thing that I could do was to fight for three and three, and I’m really happy about it.

Yeah, I mean, for sure it was more special than maybe winning it in Matterley. It’s really a dream come true. And also, somebody said to me that the first title of Antonio was the 17th of September, so that’s quite cool.

PC: Thank you very much, and congratulations on winning the MX2 World Championship.

AA: Thank you.

PC: In the second race did you know you won or were you not sure?

AA: No, actually, I knew that I was the champion because I saw at the finish line that I lapped Liam. And that’s just not nice. I didn’t want him to finish like this, you know, but it’s motocross and this can happen. I hope that he’s fine.

But yeah, it was an unbelievable day for me. Finally, my dream came true. And maybe I was also a bit lucky during the season. But always every race I did what I could – not more. I’m quite good at accepting when somebody else is faster than me. So that’s what I did all season, and yeah, now I’m world champion.

PC: Congratulations, I wouldn’t say it’s lucky. I think you were really consistent the whole way through and you kept going race after race even sometimes with bad results, but you still kept going.

AA: Yeah, actually, I had some bad races. I mean, it’s a World Championship of 19 races and you can’t be the same at all the races. Not all of the tracks are the same, not every day you feel the same. But one thing that is for sure is that I give my best every day. Sometimes when I give my best it’s P2, sometimes it’s P5 and sometimes it’s also P1. But I give my best everyday, that’s for sure.

Insight: Unrelenting Prado secures MXGP crown

Prado shares his thoughts.

Published

on

Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing star Jorge Prado secured his first MXGP title in Italy, the home GP for his team, to cap off a sensational season in style, where he’s clearly been the man to beat.

Managing his season masterfully and hardly putting a foot wrong, a relieved and ecstatic Prado, whose outpouring of emotion illustrated just what it meant to him, was delighted to finally get the job done in what’s been a season littered with upside.

Here’s a typed up version of what he had to say in the post-race press conference. Thanks to Lorenzo Resta for providing the recording.

Press Conference: Tell us how it feels to finally be the new world champion?

Jorge Prado: I mean, I guess I don’t have enough words to describe the feeling because it’s something very special.

You got to say, yeah, all that hard work pays off and all that, but I work hard every year. And this year, it came together. I have believed in the championship since the very first race. It’s not easy. There’s so many moments where something can happen, and so many moments that I’ve needed to keep my concentration and keep working. And I’ve been doing it correctly this year. So I’m super happy.

I think I had the right people around me supporting me. And I think that also made a difference. I’m super happy about this, as I was racing today with a lot of stress.

Knowing that today would be the day and I have my whole family here, I thought I better do it here. I’m just super happy about my riding and super happy about the whole season.

Once I crossed the finish line, I was still happy about the win, and then I just threw my head up and I saw my family, my girlfriend, my team, everybody there and I couldn’t believe it. Because, I mean, the chances to win in the first moto were not that big so it was something incredible. That feeling when everything, you know, starts to fall into place, that’s hard to describe.

It’s hard because you go through so many emotions during the years, so many injuries, the ups and downs, and sometimes you think that maybe I can never be world champion one day. So the stress was there already since so many rounds. And yeah, I woke up every day working hard to be world champion. I dreamt so many times I could be world champion. And it’s true, yeah, my dream came into reality. And this is super special. Getting this World Championship and I’m super proud I need to say about myself because I’m the guy, you know, obviously I made it happen, and stayed calm in very difficult situations.

PC: Congratulations to you for winning the championship, must be something special also for your team to win in Italy on such a track on this special occasion to give your team in Italy, this incredible piece of history?

JP: I didn’t know that my family was coming like really my whole family was coming. I was speaking with them one week ago and then they said we’ll come to Matterley so I was like, alright, but I think I can make it happen in Maggiora, so you will be sad that you are not going to go see it (if I win). So it was nice that they showed up on Friday along with some very close friends and it already started to be special on Friday. And yeah, like you said, the team De Carli being Italian and getting the title here, I think it’s something super special. It’s incredible. Managing the nerves race by race gave me the confidence to get it done.

PC: It must have been a very demanding season?

JP: Yeah, I managed the championship very, very well. My nerves were big sometimes fighting those other guys and still being able to get points. My starts where good all year and here today I got two holesots – I’ve been like a rocket out of the gate.

PC: How was the battle with Febvre

JP: I don’t need to show them my best (all the time), I just do it like this, you know, not a problem. But I also understand the situation that he (Febvre) has been trying to chase me and so if I wasn’t winning the overall, I was gaining or pulling away from him in the championship. But we all know him, he’s sometimes a bit strange, also out of the track, and he’s the only guy that doesn’t even say hi to me. I don’t think it’s personal. I know he likes to race hard. It’s been very hard the last races and I need to say big respect to him for that because he’s, you know, the guy on the other side. But we are here because we like racing and riding our dirt bikes. And we had some moments in the second moto. But we can look back with a big smile.
