MXGP World Championship
Injury Report: MXGP of Portugal
Five riders return to racing in Portugal.
The previous round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship was run less than a week ago, yet five riders feel that time is enough to enable them to return to racing at the Grand Prix of Portugal this weekend. Who will be taking to the Agueda track despite their recent health issues? An extensive list of all MXGP and MX2 riders can be viewed below.
In for the MXGP of Portugal |
Max Anstie: Max Anstie had another crash at the start of race two at the Grand Prix of Lombardia and then feared that he sustained internal injuries. Fortunately, he later confirmed that his handlebars did not strike anything important and he is fine to compete at the Grand Prix of Portugal.
Jordi Tixier: Jordi Tixier injured a small bone in his hand before the Grand Prix of Trentino, then opted out of the event last weekend. Tixier is now set to return at Agueda and will strive to prove a point aboard that VHR KTM, as he has landed inside of the top ten just once this season.
Ivo Monticelli: Ivo Monticelli dislocated his shoulder in the second moto at the Grand Prix of Lombardia. It was initially unclear whether he would be able to race in Portugal, but he was cleared by the doctors earlier this week. Monticelli has stated that it will not be an easy weekend.
Romain Febvre: Romain Febvre started riding a little over two weeks ago and is not at one hundred percent yet, but he will be on track at the Grand Prix of Portugal and start to build himself back up. Febvre simply stated that he has to start somewhere.
Zachary Pichon: Zachary Pichon withdrew from the Grand Prix of Lombardia, after damaging his foot in the qualifying race on Saturday. It has now been confirmed that he will race again this weekend though. Pichon currently sits twenty-ninth in the MX2 category.
Out of the MXGP of Portugal |
Calvin Vlaanderen:Â Calvin Vlaanderen returned from a fractured fibula at the previous round and fared quite well, but things deteriorated soon after. Vlaanderen picked up an infection this week, so must undergo surgery again, which will sideline him this weekend and for the upcoming rounds.
Conrad Mewse: Conrad Mewse crashed at round two of the Maxxis British Championship and sustained a wrist injury that will sideline him for around two months. Surgery was carried out a week ago, so the healing process is now underway. Alexander Brown has been drafted in as his replacement on the Hitachi team.
Jose Butron: Jose Butron shattered his ankle whilst testing in the Czech Republic and will skip the remaining rounds of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship. The injury is rather severe, hence why he needed to have a surgery that lasted for more than six hours, but he is adamant that he will be back at some point.
Jeffrey Herlings: It seems as though Jeffrey Herlings is edging closer to a return now, as he is riding regularly and could even be back at the Grand Prix of France next week. It sounds like the Portuguese event is just a little too soon though and therefore fans will have a little while longer to see him compete.
Nathan Renkens: Nathan Renkens, who actually started his own team this season, fell at the Grand Prix of The Netherlands and tore his ACL. There is currently no timeline on his recovery, but he had surgery and is out of the foreseeable.
Evgeny Bobryshev: Evgeny Bobryshev is slowly making progress with the wrist injury that he suffered back in January and may return at the Grand Prix of France next week. That has not been confirmed yet, as there is still some time for him to make a decision, but it is highly likely.
Max Nagl: Max Nagl was cleared to begin training towards the end of April and has targeted round two of the ADAC MX Masters, Moggers, as the point that he will return at. One would then presume that he is set to return to the Grand Prix scene at the Russian stop.

//PEARCY Stats Preview MXGP Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos
Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
