Pre-season events are a great way of shaking off some cobwebs ahead of the Grand Prix series, but then it is important to consider how they don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things. That is why elite riders tend to ride well within their means at those smaller races, which is exactly what Ben Watson did at the Italian Prestige round today. Watson was eleventh overall in MX2 and made it quite clear in the team press release that his sights are set on the Grand Prix of Latvia in three weeks.
“I came to the race to see the track and get back behind the start gate again. Of course the goal is to win, but I have to be smart. I will say it for everyone who raced today that it was dangerous – this is the only reason I didn’t ride on my real level today. I have learnt a lot the past year and I won’t make the same mistakes again to try to go to another level when I am not feeling at one with what is under me. The first GP back is in three weeks. This is my vision, I have my goals and in a few weeks we will see who is on their game.”
Watson sits eighth in the MX2 class in the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship and was coming off of a strong showing at the Grand Prix of The Netherlands when the pandemic forced everything to shut down. Watson was fourth in both motos at the Grand Prix of Latvia a year ago.
