Monster Energy Supercross

Viewpoint: Prediction Time

Who’s your pick?

Published

on

‘Deep field’ are two words that inevitably arise at the start of each Monster Energy Supercross season, but the claims may be justified this time around. Countless former race winners, as well as a few champions, will contest the 450SX class this weekend, hence why it is so difficult to predict who will rise above the competition.

A1 Predictions

1st

Ken Roczen

2nd

Marvin Musquin

3rd

Ryan Dungey

Initially I thought that this could be the year that Ryan Dungey finally wins Anaheim 1, but I feel that it could take him a couple of rounds to settle into things (like the Dungey of old). ‘1’ showed a lot of speed early on last year, hence why he had such a comfortable lead when the circus that is Monster Energy Supercross went east, but I’d be surprised if that is the case this time around. Anyway, consistency is his strength and I am sure that somehow he’ll find his way onto the box at the opener.

Although I know that the off-season races mean very little in the grand scheme of things, I feel that we cannot ignore Marvin Musquin’s recent run of form. The Frenchman had his fair share of podium finishes last year too, so a second place is really quite realistic. Will he be in a position to challenge for the win? No, because Ken Roczen will just be too superior. He’ll have a chip on his shoulder, just like when he made his RCH debut two years ago, and throw the hammer down. Whether that form is sustainable or not remains to be seen…

Eli Tomac

If I asked you to name a weakness that Ryan Dungey has, could you? There is nothing there that acts as a clear reason why he would not be able to pick up a third title in a row. You could argue that his age and recent injury will slow him down somewhat, sure, but would not winning as much matter if he picks up seventeen podium finishes? Does Ken Roczen really have that consistency in him? That is what I’ll be most intrigued to see, especially when it comes to rebounding from a difficult outing.

Where does Eli Tomac fit into this title fight? Well, to be brutally honest, I don’t think he does. I could honestly see Tomac enduring a season that is identical to last year, except maybe there will be one or two more wins sprinkled in there. Jason Anderson, Marvin Musquin and Cole Seely should each win a main event too, but then how often do we have six winners in a season? Cole Seely is, in my opinion, the most promising rider out of those three; I was actually close to putting him third in the series.

A1 Predictions

1st

Ken Roczen

2nd

Ryan Dungey

3rd

Marvin Musquin

This is Ken Roczen’s race to lose. It’s that simple. Although he’s coming into the weekend on a new team, he’s already shown the Honda is an exceptional motorcycle (at the Monster Energy Cup) and, although it’s a predictable pick, everything we’ve seen so far points towards that outcome.

Anaheim 1 can throw up some surprises and there is always a chance that something bizarre could happen. Any number of riders could win; Dungey, Musquin, Anderson, Webb, Reed (we can never rule him out), Seely, Tomac, Canard and Webb all have a shot! The list is endless. Dungey is my pick for second, with Musquin third.

450SX Predictions

Ken Roczen

2nd

Ryan Dungey

3rd

Cole Seely

It might be the obvious choice but, for me, this is the year that Ken Roczen comes through and delivers the premier class title. Roczen’s had his issues in the three previous seasons, but speed hasn’t been one of those issues. Consistency and the second half of a season is where he’s struggled in the past.  If we go back to the outdoors, Ken fixed both of those potential issues. He showed exceptional and explosive speed during the early phases of the race.

I simply can’t see how Ryan Dungey (or anyone else, but he will be the closest competitor in my opinion) will get close. Ryan is now in his senior years in the sport (he’s the fifth oldest supercross champion ever, true story) and, as much as I can see him delivering wins and being a podium guy week in week out, I don’t think he’ll be able to topple Roczen. I can see a number of other riders winning (Musquin, Tomac, Seely and potentially one for Webb), but none of them have delivered at a high enough level for long enough to mount a championship challenge.

Jason Anderson

It is tough to pick a winner here, which just adds to the excitement leading into Anaheim 1. In both 2013 and, more recently, 2016, we saw a surprise winner take the championship lead into round two. This time last year Roczen had an eventful first round, qualifying seventeenth and then salvaging a fifth-place finish, but he’ll be looking to start quickly this time around and I see him taking the win at A1. In fact, Dungey has only beaten Roczen once in the three times that they have lined up together at the opener. Roczen meanwhile has taken the championship lead into round two on two previous occasions (2014 and 2015).

450SX Predictions

1st

Ryan Dungey

2nd

Ken Roczen

3rd

Marvin Musquin

The 2017 Monster Energy Supercross series promises to elevate the Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen rivalry to ‘legendary’ status; a straight up dogfight of Chad Reed vs. James Stewart proportions. Both riders have been untouchable at points over the last two years, but only whilst the other was out injured. Now they’ll want to settle a score. Roczen seems right at home on the Honda and may have the edge on Dungey for speed, but the latter is a marathon runner and I suspect consistency over the seventeen rounds will be his greatest advantage.

I’m perhaps being overly harsh on the rest of the pack though; Jason Anderson and Eli Tomac clearly have the speed and fitness to challenge. Marvin Musquin has had an impressive run of wins over the winter too! I see all three battling for podiums and the occasional race win, with Marvin winning out for third place in the championship.
