MXGP World Championship
Viewpoint: Sweden Stops
A break for Uddevalla.
The calendar for the fast-approaching FIM Motocross World Championship has been tweaked, due to unforeseen circumstances. The Grand Prix of Sweden, set to take place at the historic circuit of Uddevalla, has been removed from the schedule once again and it remains to be seen if it will ever return, much to the dismay of Scandinavian fans.
What was the reason for such a drastic move? Youthstream released a rather vague press release that did not go into too much detail and left most to ponder what had transpired behind closed doors. The local news stations in Uddevalla later reported that the municipality have pulled all funding though and effectively left promoters with no choice but to withdraw. It is believable that those events occurred, as the press release hinted that the decision was made by the organisers in Sweden, then it was later revealed that they simply could not afford to put the future of the club in jeopardy.
Uddevalla is a historic circuit and one that most immediately associate with the FIM Motocross World Championship. It has not always been plain sailing at the picturesque venue though, as BMK Uddevalla took a small break from the highest level of racing just twenty-four months ago. A handful of complaints about the track conditions and way things had deteriorated prompted that, so the spare time was used to improve infrastructure and equipment. The issues were overcome with relative ease and most riders were content with the battleground that sat in front of them last season.
“I do not normally say that tracks are bad, but I hated it before,” Max Anstie told us exclusively at the Swedish Grand Prix last year. “Yesterday [Saturday] was mega though. This time of year [August] is good for it. It is not very good when it is dry here and when it is wet it is still rock hard and slippery, but there were some big ruts in a lot of the turns and it made for good racing. The track was good and the jumps were nice. It was actually fun,” he concluded. That statement alone backs up the fact that the organisers were making strides forward.
Each round of the FIM Motocross World Championship has its own pluses and minuses, as nowhere is perfect, but Uddevalla was always an enjoyable town to explore. The track was just a short drive from local amenities and there is no doubt that the community saw a significant increase in trade. It is easy to forget that the series has such a desirable effect on those in the surrounding area, even when the circuit is nestled in the most obscure location, but hosting an event is something that certain areas do everything in their power to achieve. How many fans would even know where Uddevalla is located without the Grand Prix?
The upcoming Grand Prix of Turkey is a perfect example of that. The event has not even taken place yet, but the organisers have already sunk a significant amount of budget into promotion and other gimmicks. A press conference was held at a grand hotel in Istanbul just two weeks ago, for instance, and featured on national television. The governor of Afyonkarahisar even stated that he looks at the MXGP round as proof that the city is growing and he is extremely excited to expose the area to the rest of the world. There is a much bigger game at play, which is always interesting to ponder.
Back to the Grand Prix of Sweden though. I, Lewis Phillips, would personally recommend that particular race, should it ever leap back onto the Grand Prix calendar. There are so many layers that are extremely enjoyable. The surrounding area is just breathtaking and the city of Gothenburg is a short drive away. Once at the track, the cliff offers a unique perspective that no other circuit can replicate and then there is a Go Kart track that runs alongside the MXGP paddock too. Actually, believe it or not, plenty of fans have had an opportunity to race a star in a Go Kart.
Will Sweden actually return to the FIM Motocross World Championship in the future? Who knows at this stage, but certain pieces of the puzzle will have to fall into place in order for things to work out. It seems that nothing will replace it this season, which means that the campaign will run across nineteen events. There is no doubt that will make life easier for some team managers.

//PEARCY Stats Preview MXGP Intu Xanadu-Arroyomolinos
Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
