MXGP World Championship

Lifestyle: MXGP of Indonesia

Reflecting on the experience.

Published

on

I have always wanted to write something like this, but have really never had the time. When there are MXGP rounds on back-to-back weekends, which obviously happens a lot, there is really just sixty hours to turn everything around and get back on the road. That is why bigger features are sometimes difficult to push out. Anyway, we are just fifty-seven words in and I am already off on a tangent.

There are interesting things that we get to experience whilst following the FIM Motocross World Championship, despite the fact that the weekend programme is so stacked that the days just consist of sleep and work. I have always wanted to share some of those random observations, no matter whether they are relevant or not, but have never had a place to do it. This seems like the perfect spot though. The Grand Prix of Indonesia is the first thing that I want to touch on or, more specifically, what happened in the days prior to the event. That was the second round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, which took place in March this year.

The paddock at the Indonesian MXGP was also rather unique.

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and a major city, but a domestic flight was needed from there to get to the Depati Amir Airport. That is on the island of Bangka and in the largest town, Pangkal Pinang, which is where the track was located. You could actually see it from the airport. I am certain that was no fluke though, because it was impossible to get a rental car on the island. It was possible to rent a personal driver, believe it or not, but that was it. You got a car and the driver was then there for you all day, no matter what. What happened if you did not need your car for the next seven or eight hours? The person just waited, although there was the odd occasion where someone lost their driver.

A lot of people did not feel that there was a need for the FIM Motocross World Championship to visit such an obscure location. However, your opinion would have changed had you been there. Leaving the airport there was a huge billboard for KYT helmets, which was the biggest motocross advert that I have ever seen, and it really left a lasting impression. Why would there be a need for that? Everyone uses mopeds and a lot of the same equipment applies. That is why it was an important market for a manufacturer like Honda, as Roger Harvey explained.

For us it is a very, very valid market and we need to be here,” he told us exclusively. “The number of bikes that Honda sell here is phenomenal, as is the number of bikes that are sold here in general. To show yourself off in this environment is important.” It was clear that the community had been counting down to the event for weeks, as they were prepared to welcome any visitor with open arms. They honestly felt privileged to have such a professional series visit their area, which is something that everyone can relate to. There is nothing better than having an MXGP round on your doorstep.

It is tough to explain what the city was like, but there was a stall that sold PlayStation 1 games. I guess that sums it up? Hey, they even had motocross games. Ninety percent of the industry stayed in a chain hotel that had a shuttle to the track and others luxuries, but we were not that lucky. I was there with Sean, our videographer, and we were buried in the heart of the city for a week with Valentin Guillod, Giacomo Gariboldi and some Pirelli representatives. There was actually some cool stuff to check out, like the Kaolin Lake, but the rental-car issue stopped us from going there. Employees at the hotel offered to personally take us there though, which gives you an idea of what they were willing to do to make a good impression.

Moving the race to July should ensure that the weather is pleasant.

They were ecstatic to have tourists visit their city and sample their culture. Whenever we stepped foot outside of the hotel, those on the street would yell to get our attention and run up for photographs. I guess they thought we were riders, but who knows? There was a shopping mall not too far from our hotel that was fairly normal and the same thing happened there. We walked through the front door and were immediately swarmed by people begging for photographs. That is not even the craziest part of the story though, because a security guard appeared out of nowhere and had to escort us through the mall and even bought us lunch to apologise for the commotion. I would bet that we took around seventy photos before getting to the track.

The experience was just surreal. Honestly, you are probably questioning whether everything above is actually true. Even I have wondered if it really happened! It was similar at the track, as the place was just rammed. Youthstream announced that 56,000 fans travelled to Pangkal Pinang on that weekend and I can honestly believe that. That is rather impressive, especially in their first attempt and with the dire weather conditions, so can you imagine what a success it will be when the weather picks up next year? Although everyone is quick to moan about the track and facilities, we actually have no clue what it looks like in the dry. Bear that in mind when discussing the event.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
