MXGP World Championship

The Starter: MXGP of Switzerland

First thoughts from Frauenfeld-Gachnang.

Published

on

The Grand Prix of Switzerland is proof that man-made circuits can and do work. The relatively-new track, which is on the calendar for the third year in succession, will host the sixteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship this weekend and effectively begin the final stretch of the current campaign.

Frauenfeld-Gachnang could be different to recent years this time around, as there has not been substantial rainfall on the Friday. It has rained significantly in the days prior to the race the last two years and that has then created a technical circuit with multiple lines, something that all riders adore. Will conditions be similar this weekend? There is no doubt that the track crew have identified this and will attempt to replicate the conditions, seeing as there has been so much success, but it will be interesting to see how everything develops once riders hit the track.

It is supposed to rain throughout the qualifying races anyway, so that should help tear the surface up. Whether that rainfall arrives or not remains to be seen, however, as heavy showers were predicted for today as well. Instead it has been extremely sunny with bright blue skies. An unpredictable weather forecast could lead to a mud race or a hard-baked surface. Who knows what things will look like when riders roll into the facility for the first-time tomorrow morning? Stay tuned to MX Vice and the various social media platforms for updates from the Grand Prix of Switzerland.

There is actually a lot to pay attention to this weekend, including some team switches. Samuele Bernardini will make his debut with the ASTES4-TESAR Yamaha team on his preferred surface and a track that he has performed well on in the past. Who actually remembers the fact that he was fourth overall here in 2016? It seems almost unbelievable! It would be quite the statement if he rolls out onto the track in his new colours and immediately hovers around the top five, something that he has failed to do at all this year. It would really help shed some light on what really happened with the TM Factory Racing outfit as well.

Additionally, Vamo Honda have found a replacement for Marshal Weltin. Oriol Casas, a nineteen-year-old Spaniard, will sit alongside Micha Boy De Waal beneath the awning at the remaining rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship. Injuries have hampered the new talents thus far this year and, aside from that piece of information, not much is known about the signing. It will be interesting to see what he brings to the table. Casas is a former Spanish champ in the MX2 class, if that means anything. Gustavo Pessoa has taught us that it is wrong to rule anything out before someone has an opportunity to prove themselves.

Aside from those snippets, attention will turn to the normal battles on track. Jeffrey Herlings vs. Antonio Cairoli, Jorge Prado vs. Pauls Jonass, Thomas Kjer Olsen vs. Ben Watson, Clement Desalle vs. Tim Gajser, Mathys Boisrame vs. Mel Pocock and many more. There is no shortage of action, which is sometimes rare at this point in the season.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
