MXGP World Championship

Updates: MXGP of Germany

A list of updates ahead of Teutschenthal.

Published

on

This list has changed significantly, following the Grand Prix of Latvia. Kegums claimed many riders and some will be able to race this weekend. Others, however, face a period on the sidelines. For more on the sixteen riders who will miss the eighth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, peruse the list below.

In for the MXGP of Germany

Romain Febvre: Romain Febvre did not sustain any broken bones in his crash at the Grand Prix of Latvia, but he did do damage to his tendons. That has caused some inflammation and a considerable amount of pain. Febvre will push through the pain, or attempt to anyway, at round eight of the FIM Motocross World Championship. It makes sense, considering that he is still right in the hunt for third in the premier-class standings.

Hunter Lawrence: Hunter Lawrence was battling a virus at the first two rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship, then broke the metacarpal in his hand at round four. Lawrence returned from that at round seven, but crashed in the first encounter and knocked himself out. It is difficult to keep up with all of that! Lawrence must get cleared by the doctor this evening in order to race, so his status will be confirmed later on.

Tommy Searle: Tommy Searle broke his collarbone at the Grand Prix of Europe, but will finally return to the FIM Motocross World Championship this weekend. Searle has competed in the previous two rounds of the Maxxis British Championship to warm up for this and had solid results. Searle admitted at the beginning of the month, however, that he still felt as though his shoulders were a little off and causing him to ride differently.

Jorge Zaragoza: Jorge Zaragoza, of the Ausio Yamaha squad, fractured his collarbone at the Grand Prix of Portugal, but will return to racing this weekend. Zaragoza missed the last two rounds, of course, and now runs twenty-ninth in the series standings. The first moto at the Grand Prix of La Comunitat Valenciana is the only time that he has scored points this season, but he was thirteenth in that race. There is certainly potential there.

Out of the MXGP of Germany

Alvin Ostlund: Alvin Ostlund was one of the many riders who got caught out by the waves at the Grand Prix of Latvia. The crash that he experienced was rather serious and, unfortunately, a broken ankle was sustained. Although it has not been confirmed how long it will take for the ailment to recover, he will not be on track anytime soon.

Todd Waters: Todd Waters was eager to make a splash in his HRC debut at the Grand Prix of Latvia, but his time aboard the bike was short-lived. A crash in qualifying fractured his collarbone, unfortunately, and surgery was performed earlier this week. There is no timeline on his recovery, but the HRC squad will be sticking by his side.

Stephen Rubini: Stephen Rubini crashed in the waves at a similar time to Alvin Ostlund, but sustained a long list of injuries. The Frenchman, who had the best showing of his career the week prior in Russia, partially ruptured a ligament in his shoulder, suffered muscle damage and has a hematoma behind his shoulder. Additionally, he fractured his finger in qualifying! There is no timeline on his return.

Adam Sterry: Adam Sterry twisted his ankle a week before the Grand Prix of Latvia, but did not really think anything of it. An additional evaluation revealed that ligament damage was sustained, however, hence why he did not race last weekend and will miss the Grand Prix of Germany as well. The F&H Racing Kawasaki rider will be back at his home Grand Prix at the beginning of June.

Graeme Irwin: Graeme Irwin got trapped under his bike at the beginning of month and sustained horrific burns on his back and shoulder. The issue will rule him out of the Grand Prix of Germany this weekend. It was initially stated that he would return at the Grand Prix of Great Britain, although there is a chance that his recovery could take longer than that.

Vsevolod Brylyakov: Vsevolod Brylyakov has had such a rough time of it in recent years and, unfortunately, suffered another blow at the Grand Prix of Russia. Brylyakov tore his ACL in the second moto and will miss a significant amount of time. In fact, there is a chance that he will not be able to return at all this year. Kemea Yamaha are braced for that and have drafted Anthony Rodriguez in as a replacement rider.

Shaun Simpson: Initial reports suggested that Shaun Simpson did not sustain any significant injuries at the Grand Prix of Russia, but a report from Yamaha later indicated that he fractured three ribs and chipped his ilium. The ilium is the top part of the hip bone. Anyway, Simpson skipped the Grand Prix of Latvia and will not line up in Germany either. The Wilvo Yamaha MXGP star expects to return to racing at Matterley Basin.

Bas Vaessen: Bas Vaessen had a spectacular crash in the second moto at the Grand Prix of Trentino, which left him with a grade three muscle rupture in his leg. It is likely that Vaessen will return to racing at the Grand Prix of Lombardia in June and, seeing as he will miss a significant amount of time, 114 Motorsports have drafted in a replacement for this weekend. Freek van der Vlist will join the team for one race.

Darian Sanayei: Darian Sanayei tore his ACL at the first round of the Maxxis British Championship, then the Latvian fixture was initially pointed to as a race that he could return at. It now seems as though he will hit the track at Matterley Basin and then a decision will be made about his future shortly after that. It sounds like he has been back on the bike for a little over a week.

Valentin Guillod: There was some positive news from the Standing Construct KTM team prior to the Grand Prix of Latvia, as it was confirmed that Valentin Guillod has started riding again! There is still no timeline on his return, but one would presume that he will be back at the races towards the end of June. Guillod has had a rough go of it lately, as he has raced at just one Grand Prix since May last year.

Jordi Tixier: Jordi Tixier initially wanted to return at the Grand Prix of Trentino, but then scrapped that idea after he struggled at an international race in France. Tixier had an additional break following that and was cleared to ride earlier this week, but is adamant that he will not return until he is at one hundred percent. Perhaps he will return in the Czech Republic in July?

Brian Bogers: After shattering his foot whilst testing a CRF250R in November, Brian Bogers started riding at the end of March. Bogers encountered more issues through that time, unfortunately, as a small crack on his foot was identified. Surgery was performed just a little over a week ago, so he will not return to racing until the end of the season. Todd Waters is supposed to be filling his seat beneath the HRC awning.

Honda Racing Corporation

Brian Hsu: Brian Hsu dislocated his shoulder whilst training in Italy before the Grand Prix of Europe. The shoulder was put back into place immediately and it was stated that he would not be out for too long. There has been no statement regarding his recovery, a timeline on his return or anything else though. Both Hsu and Bud Racing have been contacted for a comment.

Arnaud Tonus: It has been a difficult couple of months for Arnaud Tonus, with a handful of knocks and injuries. A dislocated shoulder that was sustained at LaCapelle Marival was the most devastating, as it required surgery and will rule him out for another four months or so. It is going to be quite some time before the Swiss star is seen on track again.

Milko Potisek: Milko Potisek tangled with another rider on the face of a jump at the MXGP of Europe and, as a result, fractured his ankle in two places. Potisek got the green light from his surgeon to begin riding a little over a week ago and has confirmed to MX Vice that he will strive to return in either Belgium or Switzerland later this year.

Anton Gole: Anton Gole has been riding for a while now, after sustaining a broken scaphoid in the winter, but his hand did not feel strong enough for him to consider a return at the Grand Prix of Germany. Instead, Gole has opted to log more laps and ensure that he can return with a bang. It is extremely likely that he will be back in action at the Grand Prix of Great Britain.

Once again, our resident stats guru, Paul Pearcy, provides a breakdown of the MX2 class going into Intu Xanadu. Famed more for its access to a shopping mall and McDonald’s than actual passing, the MX2 contenders will be looking to make their mark. Last year, Simon Laengenfelder reigned supreme and was unstoppable on Sunday, with no rider able to match his pace. If you were a betting man, who would be your winner?
