Stat Sheet: San Diego

There is so much that goes on at each Monster Energy Supercross round that it is inevitable that you will overlook certain things. That is where our regular ‘Stat Sheet’ feature comes into play, however, as we focus on the details that you may have overlooked.

– Petco Park plays host to baseball games usually, so the floor is one of the smallest on the Monster Energy Supercross schedule. A shorter track is created, seeing as they only have a certain amount of room to play with, hence why the timed main events were given a chance to shine on Saturday night. More laps were completed, as well as twenty-one minutes, so the main event may have seemed longer than what we have had in recent years. However, the main covered that same amount of time in Glendale eleven months ago!

Site-Ken-Roczen-7
Ken Roczen continues to build on an unbeaten run with HRC.

Sean Ogden

– Ken Roczen obviously prevailed across the twenty-four laps and continued his unbeaten run with HRC Honda. Roczen failed to lead a lap for the first time this season in the main event though, as Ryan Dungey led the first seven, but he has still led fifty of the fifty-seven laps that he has completed thus far. At this point last year, he had not led a single one.

– Just how competitive was Dungey in that main event? The defending champion was faster than his foe on ten of the twenty-four laps, so almost half of them, and actually gained four tenths through laps twenty, twenty-one and twenty-two. That was the only point that he recorded faster times on three consecutive laps.

– Dungey has obviously not won a race yet, but still has forty-four points to his name. How often has he had more than that after two rounds? That has happened in just three of the eight years that he has contested the premier division (2010, 2012 and 2016). The worst start that he has had was four years ago; he garnered just thirty-three points through rounds one and two.

– Although Roczen and Dungey have been so superior through rounds one and two, Marvin Musquin has stayed relevant with some underrated rides. The average lap time that he ended up with in San Diego was seven tenths slower than the one Dungey had, but a massive eight tenths quicker than Eli Tomac. That is quite impressive for a guy who has never stood atop the podium in the premier class.

Site-Marvin-Musquin-2
Marvin Musquin has recorded a pair of underrated riders thus far.

Sean Ogden

– Who made the most progress in the 450SX main event? Chad Reed moved forward from fourteenth on lap one to ninth, according to the official records, but Dean Wilson actually entered turn one in dead last, so may have made even more moves than the Australian. Who dropped back the most? Blake Baggett ended lap one tenth, but a crash restricted him to twentieth at the flag.

– It is actually a surprise that Jason Anderson did not make the most moves, as starts are still a major issue for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing star. Anderson has had an average-starting position of ninth through two rounds, which is the ninth best in the class. Even Baggett, who is buried in eighteenth in the points, has benefitted from better starts! Anderson rounded turn one in eighth on average across the whole of last year.

– Speaking of Baggett, his results may not be a true indication of the speed that he has showcased. The Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM rider had the seventh-fastest lap time on Saturday and has looked frisky at points. Everyone is, of course, talking about that loop out though, which was caused by a minor clutch malfunction. “Tonight wasn’t my night,” was all he could offer up post-race.

– Davi Millsaps, who sits alongside Blake Baggett, is off to one of his best starts in recent memory. In fact, he has not started a year this well since that incredible 2013 season! A handful of riders are off to strong starts, actually, as the last time that Josh Grant recorded this many points through two rounds was in his 450SX debut in 2009! On the other side of the coin, this is worst start to a season that Chad Reed has ever had (barring that injury-riddled campaign in 2010).

– Cole Seely was mildly surprised that he posted the third-fastest time in qualifying a week ago, as he did not manage that at all last year. Bad habits die hard though, it seems, as he failed to back that up on Saturday and ended the timed sessions in ninth overall. Starts are an area that must be fixed if he is going to land on the podium, just as he did at the first two rounds a year ago.

– Has consistency been prevalent in the premier class? Roczen, Dungey, Musquin, Anderson, Seely, Tomac, Millsaps and Weston Peick have occupied the top eight spots in both main events thus far. No one else has managed to capture a pair of top-ten finishes.

Site-Cooper-Webb-1
Cooper Webb has endured a turbulent couple of weeks.

Sean Ogden

– One would expect to see Cooper Webb in that group, but the rookie is off to a turbulent start. He was passed straight up just four times in the 250SX West series last year, but lost more positions than that on Saturday alone! The whoops have been pointed to as an issue and, well, it is easy to see why. Webb recorded the twenty-second fastest time in that sector in the main event.

– What happened to Christophe Pourcel? Well, he was running a fine third in the heat before crashing in that tricky sixth turn. The Frenchman was slow to stand up, but eventually did so and rode off. Oddly enough he was not seen again and the team failed to muster up an explanation, as they simply stated that he “was not seen again” in a post-race press release. Reports suggest that an illness was behind his disappearance.

– Shane McElrath is off to a phenomenal start in the 250SX West division, especially considering the lack of wins that he had prior to this year. Heck, he only had four podiums finishes before Anaheim 1! It is quite common for a 250F rider start this well, actually, as a rider has swept the first two rounds in five of the last seven years. That bodes well for McElrath, as four of those guys went on to claim the title.

Site-Shane-McElrath-3
Like Ken Roczen, Shane McElrath is undefeated thus far.

Sean Ogden

– Sectors one and three were strengths for McElrath, if the times are anything to go by. Where did he struggle the most? The final sector, as Justin Hill was the quickest on that part of the track. Aaron Plessinger was the fastest in the other sector and also had the fastest lap time of the race, which was just four tenths quicker than the time that McElrath set. Plessinger, of course, had the quickest lap a week ago also.

– Plessinger can unearth that raw speed at points, but poor starts have stopped him from putting it to good use; he has had an average starting position of seventh through two rounds. It may actually surprise you to see just how much quicker he was than McElrath in the second half of the main event in San Diego.

– Who actually improved on their results from Anaheim 1? Justin Hill, Austin Forkner, Jimmy Decotis, Phil Nicoletti, Hayden Mellross, Josh Hansen and Scott Champion all managed that. You would have presumed that there would be more, right? Three of those riders make up the seven guys who have managed to finish in the top ten at both events.

Site-Martin-Davalos-2
Martin Davalos continues to add to his number of 250SX starts.

Sean Ogden

– Martin Davalos has obviously been around a while, so most were surprised to see him fall apart late in the main event. Just how long has he been racing in the 250SX division? The fourth place that he garnered on Saturday night was the thirty-fifth top five finish of his indoor career! San Diego was the eighty-third supercross main event of his career.

– Who made the most passes in the 250SX main event? Jeremy Martin! The Geico Honda rider started twenty-second in the main event, but charged through to seventh. The twenty-nine points that he has garnered in the last two weeks make this the worst start to a supercross season that he has had since the 2014 Monster Energy Supercross series.

– A top of the hat to Hayden Mellross, who captured a career-best ninth on Saturday night. “I was happy with how I rode all the way until the end,” the Australian said post-race. “I didn’t give up.” An electrical problem robbed him of a similar finish at the first Monster Energy Supercross series.
