Stat Sheet: Champ Chat

A look at the eleven MX2 champions.

Published

on

It is almost difficult to believe the position that Jorge Prado was sat in following the Grand Prix of Patagonia-Argentina, the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, as he was outside of the top ten in the series standings and had just come off of a broken elbow. Miraculously, he transformed his campaign into one of the most dominant in recent memory.

Jorge Prado controlled the standings from round fourteen, which was where he clinched the red plate. The power begun to shift into his corner from the Grand Prix of France on though. It was at that event that the reigning champion, Pauls Jonass, begun to encounter misfortune and where Prado asserted his dominance. To put things into perspective, he won every round but two during that second half. Calvin Vlaanderen and Thomas Covington were the only ones who tore wins from his grasp towards the end of the season. Twelve overall victories were claimed by the eventual champion.

How does that compare to the previous champions in MX2 though? The number of rounds varies from one year to the next and there was more this year than ever before: Twenty were run in total. Pauls Jonass only won six out of a possible nineteen during his title-winning campaign though, which puts things into perspective. It is worth noting that Jeffrey Herlings won fourteen of the eighteen the year before that and even sat out of three of those with an injury, so he is still the benchmark. The average overall rankings are the best gauge, one could argue, and offer another intriguing look at this particular topic.

Jorge Prado had an average overall finish of second this season, which could have been even better had he not ended eleventh at that first round in South America. It is not uncommon for an MX2 champion to have that average. Jeffrey Herlings managed it in his title-winning years (2012, 2013 and 2016), Tyla Rattray did it (2008) and so did Antonio Cairoli (2007). It is most common for the MX2 champion to finish the year with an average overall finish of third though. Pauls Jonass (2017), Ken Roczen (2011), Marvin Musquin (2009 and 2010), Christophe Pourcel (2006) and Ben Townley (2004) fall into that category.

Is there an MX2 champion who had a worse average finish than their fellow medal winners? Two champions, Antonio Cairoli (2005) and Tim Gajser (2015), concluded their title-winning campaigns with an average of fifth. Cairoli won six rounds when he claimed his first championship but had some horrific events too, like the seventh round at Matchams Park. Cairoli was twentieth overall at that round. Tim Gajser followed a similar pattern, whilst en route to his maiden title ten years later, as he won five rounds and had some terrible events too. There is no doubt that every fan remembers him launching through the sky at the fifth round, Valkenswaard.

It is just as interesting to look at the average starting positions that each former champion amassed in their championship-winning season. Jorge Prado must have the most impressive number in that category, right? It would actually be wrong to presume that. Prado had an average starting position of third this year, which was dragged down by the opening moto at the Grand Prix of Latvia, and that is still most impressive. Jeffrey Herlings did better than that two seasons ago though and finished up with an average-starting position of second. The guy was not even known as being a great starter at that point!

Tim Gajser had the worst average starting position of any former MX2 champion. It is unbelievable that he captured a gold plate, despite the fact that ended the first lap in eighth on average in 2015! Had he been fighting with Jorge Prado this year and started in a similar fashion, it would have been almost impossible for him to make a serious run at a title. Pauls Jonass is the perfect example of that! How many times did he state that his starts left him at a noteworthy disadvantage? Other than Gajser, the champion with the worst-average starting position was Antonio Cairoli (sixth) thirteen seasons ago.

If a direct comparison is done between Jorge Prado and Pauls Jonass last season, the former did better in every single category. Prado had a better average-qualifying position, third, compared to Jonass who ended up qualifying fourth on average when he won the title. Starts were obviously a strength for Prado, therefore he was better in that category, then he had a better average-race finish as well. Prado was third on average across the forty motos this season, whereas Jonass was fourth. The worrying thing is that Prado could improve on these statistics when the new season fires into life. It is quite likely that he will be even more of a dominant force. Brace yourselves.

Brian Bogers Fantic 2024
Brian Bogers scored his first GP podiums in the MX2 class in 2016 and 2017 and made an early switch to the premier class in 2018 at only 21 years of age. After successfully overcoming a string of injuries, it was in 2022 when the Dutchman enjoyed his best season so far. Bogers placed sixth in the MXGP World Championship as one of the top-ranked riders and made his childhood dream come true with a superb GP win in the deep, punishing sand of Lommel, home of Motocross. The 27-year-old from Eindhoven will be looking to achieve more success in Fantic Factory colours.
Brian Bogers:
“I am a very lucky guy at the moment because I never thought that I would still get the chance to race in MXGP this season. Therefore, you can imagine that I don’t only take this opportunity with both hands but with both hands and feet! Thank you to Fantic Factory Racing MXGP for this amazing opportunity, I am very motivated and focused to let this work.”
Louis Vosters, Team Owner:
“Brian Bogers needs no introduction, winning a MXGP overall in Lommel on arguably the most demanding track on the calendar speaks for itself. Together with Fantic and our proven MXGP team, we are sure he can be a regular frontrunner at the top of our sport. The first training sessions have been going well, he is adapting well to the bike and we are looking forward to seeing Brian line up on the Fantic XXF 450 very soon.”
Mariano Roman, CEO Fantic Motor SpA:
“We are thrilled that a stand-out rider like Brian Bogers joins our Fantic family. We have followed his strong performance on track over the last years and we are sure he will make us proud. Alongside his fellow Dutchman Glenn Coldenhoff, we are confident to pull off a great season on our return to the highly competitive MXGP class.”
