South West Motocross – Paralyzed Spencer Watts Rides Again

Published

on

October 20th saw the  South west motocross 2013  club championship come to a muddy end!

The clubs championship contenders headed towards Bristol to ride the brilliant hillside venue Yarley.
The event was also being held to raise funds for Wings for life, an epic charity specializing in spinal cord research.
A highly special event took place on the day also as the  son of the clubs chairman, Spencer Watts got back on a specially adapted motocross bike for the first time since  a serious motocross accident that left him paralyzed  in 2011.
Young Spencer aged 18 put his dreams into getting back onto a bike a reality and whilst doing so, Spencer raised a great amount of money to go towards his chosen charity.
Spencer performed an inspirational lap before the opening race of the day.
And later in the day Spencer road some more laps in the poor conditions surrounded by many of his friends and club riders.
Showing each and every rider and spectator that no matter what happens there is always a way! And you should never let go of your dreams.
After completing his first lap, the line up of adult competitors were ready to go racing, as the double points and final club championship round was about to kick off!
The gates fell for the first race of the day witch consisted of a mix of competitors from MX1 MX2 and VMX.
With double points up for grabs each and every rider had to stay clear from any minor mistakes.
Wet conditions were had threw out the day with the first race having the better conditions for all groups, as the weather got worse later in the day.  Championship contender Ryan Redwood was soon to be leading the mixed group abroad his CRF with great riding each and every lap it was no surprise to see Redwood edging away from the pack.
Each and every lap one particular corner of the track got worse, with deep ruts and a tight enter many riders were seen taking falls.
But all riders kept putting in great effort knowing double points were to be had.
Ryan Redwood took the opening race win in the mixed group.
After a great race one win, Ryan Redwood was back out to take another race victory in the second moto.
The third and final adults race of the day turned into a wash out, the rain fell heavy causing real problems to the track.
Many riders were taking falls due to the terrible conditions with a few going on to retire.
After 2 consecutive wins, Ryan Redwood showed he isent just a fair weather rider as he went on to take the final race win aswell.
Securing six wins worth of points to add to his seasons results.
Some of the other competitors struggled in the conditions but maxximum effort was put in by all! Mike White took the runners up position on the day in the MX1 with Callum Williams taking third.
Three strong results took Ryan Lock to the MX2 victory leaving Micheal Goldsworthy settling in second ahead of Mike Summers.
Fourth place was claimed by Russell Watts who got the better of Kurtis Bence.
Whilst the only lady rider in the field Charlene Vernon secured sixth.
Ben Braddick came out on top of the VMX class followed by Neville Calby, Ricky Furse and Ian Carter.
Whilst Daniel and John Lawrence finished up the top six positions.

Rookies class hosted some great motocross racing with a few of the south Wests best riders being in attendance some tight racing up front was bound to take place and the opening race showed that the racers to watch for the day were to be, Dan Mundell Billy King and Jack Roberts as the three battled out the opening race together. After a furious battle in the opening race the tapes flung back for the start of the second moto. Dan Mundell and Jack Roberts lead the early laps.
Mundell lead a hard charging Jack Roberts but Jack Roberts pushed him self to hard seeing him take a nasty tumble on one of the tracks jump leaving him out of the race.
Billy King likely aware of Roberts incident, starts to charge himself towards leader Dan Mundell. Billy King got closer to the lead action but struggled getting by some of the tracks back markers. Dan Mundell was also struggling to pass some of the other riders closing the gap down beetween him and Billy. Billy King was inches away from Mundell and after charging up the long start straight hill, Billy King turned the racing dirty with a harsh block pass towards Dan Mundell. Billy King went on to take the moto win, whilst safer and more respectable riding claimed Dan Mundell second. The final rookie race of the day was underway with Dan Mundell claiming the race holeshot. Dan and Billy were both in a position to be  able to claim the overall victory with whoever taking the final race win to secure the overall position top spot.
Both riders charged around the track together Billy King played chase to Dan Mundell for a lot of the race but a strong pass in one of the tracks corner secured Billy King the lead as he later went on to take the win securing the overall victory!
Dan Mundell had a great days riding showing strong riding in a sportsmanship style securing a well deserved second place just missing out on victory. Also having epic rides in each moto, Callum Warren secured third. Plymouth city moto park fan Jack Aggett took a solid fourth overall.
Whilst Reegan West finished in the final top six position.

Big and small wheel racers competed together once again with all riders mixing it up well all there to score valuable championship points.
The boggy corner of the track is where most positions were being changed! The corner even caused problems for some of the classes top riders. The openning race began with Archie Hicks claiming the holeshot.
Matt Treen was close by showing the power of the Honda 150F.
Matt Treen took the lead within a couple of laps but a mistake soon after re handed the lead over to Hicks.
Archie Hicks abroad the TM 85 showed superb riding, leading Matt Treen around the hillside circuit.
Half way into the moto a fallen back marker in the tracks worse corner  caused big problems for leading rider Archie Hicks allowing Matt Treen to claim the lead, leaving a rightfully frustrated Archie Hicks waiting for marshals assistance to get going again.
Keeping out of trouble and choosing great lines threw out the circuit Bradley Flagg took the opening moto win.
The second race was off to a flying start but a huge crash was had by Matt Treen as his bike was seen cartwheeling down the tracks first hill taking out other riders.
Matt Treen was fortunate to remain unharmed from this crash as he was later seen trying to get back on to his bike.
The action out front continued with Archie Hicks and Ryan Mundell out front having a real battle between themselves.
Race one winner Bradley Flagg was also seen on another strong charge towards the front.
With Cornwall rider Thomas Townrow having a great ride in second place whilst his racing buddy seemed to be off the pace a bit on his KTM racing machine.
Bradley Flagg took the race win after another excellent ride.
After harsh rainfull at the start of the final block of racing the condition of the track had deteriorated a lot by the times of the youths final race.
A smaller line up of riders gated for this moto as a very difficult race was started.
Bradley Flag was seen showing to make it a day of dominant wins as he nailed  the race holeshot getting the edge on the rest of the pack.  Thomas Townrow abroad the 101 plated Suzuki was seen take the lead as the strong six foot lad had the advantage of personal strength over the smaller riders.
Townrow continued to use his size and strength to full advantage threw out the moto but towards the race end, the suzuki machine blew up leaving Townrows day in disappointment.
But going home with big smiles as the top big wheel competitor was Bradley Flagg who left Archie Hicks in second place.
Sam Gill had mixed results securing him a strong third place. Ryan Mundell took overall small wheel victory ahead of runner up placed, Jordan Hayman.
Whilst Ollie Clements claimed fifth.

The opening Junior 65cc race saw Jason Down in the lead very soon after the tape start system flew back.
Jason Down was seen to be enjoying the wet conditions Yarley had on offer.
Andrew Townrow was seen having a great ride abroad his Husky 65cc flying threw the tracks ruts at great speed.
Whilst Luke woolgrove showed good ways of finding grip around the circuit.
Jason Down claimed the junior sixty five race win.
The second race was off to a strong start with the opening race winner, Jason Down taking the race holeshot again.
Jason Down was soon to check out at the front of the pack. Whilst number 5 Harvey James was showing great style once again riding strong with Luke Woolgrove shortly behind.
Jason Down took the race win looking to claim the overall victory on the day!
The poorest conditions of the day were had in the final race as heavy rain came and ruined the tracks condition.
After two consecutive race wins, Jason Down was back out front in action wrestling his bike to where he wanted it around the track.
Each lap Jason Down was seen edging away once again.
Harvey James and Luke Woolgrove again were both on a great form putting in maximum efforts into attacking the challenging conditions. After a tiring and tough race around Yarley for the final time, Jason Down took the final race win taking all three wins to first overall! Harvey James took three great results too claim second overall. Luke Woolgrove was up front in all three motos taking himself to a strong third overall. Whilst Kai Tucker claimed himself the final top six position.

Hardcore Auto racers were not to be off put by any kind of poor conditions as some great Auto racing took place at the demanding Yarley circuit.
The opening race was off to a strong start with the number 33 Riley Watts leading the autos at the end of the opening lap!
Later on it was Bradley Way leading the pack riding great.
Finley James was on great form and went on to take the race win after a successful pass on Bradley Way.
After achieving the moto one win, Finley James was full off confidence and this was shown in his second race performance.
Bradley Way was having another strong ride but was unable to defeat racing rival Finley. Finley James took the second race win deservingly.  The third and final race under intensely poor conditions was underway with Riley Watts being the leader in the opening stages finding the better lines on the slick Yarley circuit.
All riders were respectably  giving it there all to get around for the final race.
After two wins already under his belt, the number 50 of Finley James went on to take the third and final race win securing overall victory bagging loads of points towards his final championship total.
Whilst Bradley Way was seen pass the line later on after a really determined fight to the flag securing second overall.
Leading for parts of the Riley Watts took third overall ahead of, Ben Zeale, Henry Life and Leo Wase.

Michelin MX Nationals – Race Report, Rnd 2 – Monster Mountain

Full report from packed event in South Wales

Published

on

Last weekend the new Monster Mountain facility staged its first event, round two of the Michelin MX Nationals powered by Milwaukee, and what an action-packed weekend it was! With almost 300 hundred riders keen to get on the new track and a tremendous crowd for the MX Nationals, both enjoyed the two days of fast and hot motocross action.

Words: Dick Law for Michelin MX Nationals | Featured Image: Michelin MX Nationals

If you haven’t seen the images and videos on social media, Monster Mountain is a USA- styled track set on top of a Welsh mountain. With months and months of hard, back-breaking work that involved moving hundreds of tons of earth with machines the size of a small house, the Monster Mountain track was born, and the scale of the project was mind-blowing. Once you have climbed up the mountain’s side to the peak, you enter a landscape that could be easily mistaken for Pala or even the moon.

The Leatt Pro MX1s were mainly about three riders, the Crendon Fastrack Honda pairing of Conrad Mewse and Josh Gilbert and Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha rider Harri Kullas. The winner would come from one of these riders, who have dominated the home racing scene all year.

Kullas got the holeshot at the start of the first combined MX1 and MX2 pro race but was quickly passed a quarter of the way around the opening lap by Mewse and then his teammate Gilbert, who had gated third, slipped by Kullas before the end of the lap. While this happened, John Adamson (ASA United GasGas) got cross threaded in one of the deep ruts and dropped from fourth to tenth.

Adamson’s teammate Ivo Monticelli, who was making a comeback from an injury he suffered at round one of the Revo series, took full advantage of his teammate Adamson’s problems and took over his fourth place as Jason Meara (JM 10 Moto-cycle Racing Honda), Tom Grimshaw (Chambers Racing), Charlie Putnam (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna), Jamie Carpenter (Cab Screens Crescent Yamaha), and Dan Thornhill (Chambers Racing) all moved up a place at Adamson’s expense.

The leading four riders of Mewse, Gilbert, Kullas, and Monticelli stayed in the same running order to the end of the race as Meara and Grimshaw fought over fifth place. The two riders changed position many times till, on lap eight, Meara suffered a mechanical failure, leaving Grimshaw to make fifth all his own.

Adamson was on a charge after his crash and fought back to sixth at the end of the race, while Putnam came off his machine, relegating himself back to thirtieth place.

The immense new track, with its long start straights and big jumps, and even an adverse camber turn, was always going to disadvantage the smaller Apico MX2 machines over the power of the Leatt MX1 machines, with Glen McCormick (Chambers Racing) being the first of the MX2s around turn one, followed by Jamie Wainwright (WPH/SBE/Redline KTM) and Carlton Husband (Phoenix EvenStrokes Kawasaki) as race favourite Charlie Cole (Blades Bikes Kawasaki) suffering a mechanical problem that saw him at the back of the pack with a lot of work to do.

Wainwright had passed McCormick to lead the MX2s by the end of the first lap as Husband slipped back three places. But, as the race continued, Husband upped his pace and repassed six other riders on his way to tenth in the race, but first MX2 home.

McCormick put on a last-lap charge and snatched a place from the hands of Wainwright as the pair finished eleventh and thirteenth on the track but second and third in the MX2s, as for the unlucky Cole. He regrouped and fought his way back from thirtieth to finish fifteenth in the race but fourth MX2 and the last person on the lead lap.

Kullas once again got the holeshot at the start of race two, and once again, Gilbert found a way past him by the end of the lap. Behind them, it was Grimshaw, Meara, Monticelli, Mewse and Carpenter.

Grimshaw took his time in the opening laps and slipped back to sixth. Mewse slid past Monticelli on the second lap to take over third place, with Meara relegated to fifth.

While Grimshaw and Carpenter fought over sixth place, the running order of Gilbert from Kullas, Mewse, Monticelli, and Meara stayed the same till the very last lap when Mewse used the backmarkers to snatch second place from Kullas, and with it second overall for the meeting. (MX Vice was witness to the incident that cost Kullas second place, where two MX2 riders fell in a rut that Harri had already committed to, leaving the Yamaha man to haul his bike out of the massively deep inside rut as Conrad tiptoed around the outside of them, probably laughing his head off!).

On the Apico MX2 side of race two, Cole had gated tenth but had Wainwright in his wheel tracks and McCormick two places further back as they battled for the MX2 lead amongst the bigger MX1 machines.

Wainwright & Cole battle for MX2 supremacy in race two. Cole won the event, but Wainwright leads the series!

After changing the lead with Wainwright several times, Cole established himself eighth on the track but first of the MX2s. Wainwright finished in tenth place for the second MX2, with McCormick third. Unfortunately, Husband didn’t get the start he wanted and didn’t seem to get going as he finished sixth MX2, behind Joe Brooks and Charlie Heyman (Tru7 Honda).

With three race wins and a second place, Ben Edwards won the RFX expert MX1s from race one winner and wildcard rider Josh Waterman. Jayden Ashwell (AJP Geartec Husqvarna) was third, with Jay McCrum missing a podium position.

Ashley Greedy (Darjen Contractors Gas Gas) won his first three races in the RFX MX2s, but while in the lead of his fourth and final race of the weekend, he was passed by Jimmy Margetson (AJP Geartec Husqvarna) on his way to second overall, with Mathew Bayliss (Darjen Contractors Gas Gas).

Ash Greedy had a great weekend on home territory.

Wildcard rider Scott Elderfield won three out of his four races on his way to the Motoverde amateur MX1 overall, with race four winner Sean Wainwright (Fasteddy Racing Honda) second. Josh Greedy (Darjen Contractors Kawasaki) tied in third with Luke Mellows (Forty-Four Honda).

Wildcard riders took three out of the top four places in the Motoverde amateur MX2 class as Ben Clarke, with two wins and two third places, took the overall from race two winner Raife Broadley (723 Race Bikes Gas Gas) while the winner of the last race Wal Beaney was third, just five points behind the winner.

Tallon Aspden (LA Groundwork KTM), with three wins and a second place, won the Worx clubman MX1s from Darren Manning-Coe, who was second in all four of his races as Daniel Chapman, the winner of the last race of the weekend was third as Drew Lane just missed out on the podium by two points.

Sam Ongley (Fantic) won all four Spiral GFX clubman MX2 races from Matt Tolly and Charlie West.

In the youth Fly Futures MXY2s, Billy Askew (GTCi Revo Kawasaki) won all four races and remains unbeaten this year. Behind him, Domonic Newbury (426 Motorsport KTM) and Mackenzie Marshall (DK Offroad KTM) were separated by just three points as they finished the weekend in second and third overall.

Billy Askew (441) already has his nose in front of Domonic Newbury (404), Mackenzie Marshall (555) and Jak Taylor (22, WM Tatchell Husqvarna).

Reece Jones (SJP Moto Husqvarna) was third in his first race of the weekend, but from then on won the other three for first overall in the Fly MXY125s. Jake Walker (Mr T Racing KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top four all weekend, was second, with a race-three low score pushing Tyla Hooley (Fantic) down to third.

Josh Vail (SJP Moto Husqvarna), with two race wins, a second and a third place, took the overall win in the Syntol Big Wheel 85s with Jamie Keith (MBR X&P KTM), who didn’t finish out of the top three all weekend, second and Charlie Richmond third.

Josh Vail took the overall win in the Syntol Supermini Big Wheel class

With a couple of wins and two-second places, Joel Winstanley-Dawson (Techsource Racing KTM) won the Syntol small wheel 85s from race one winner Lucas Lee (Husqvarna) and Ollie Truman.
